heroicmuse I respect your point of view, but I have to disagree about Nicole. I never understood her character as a journalist. Her main storylines revolved around men...being pregnant, trying to become pregnant, faking pregnancies to keep a man, hiding pregnancies, etc. There was really nothing more to her. I never saw her really work to achieve something beyond getting a man. Will, on the other hand, has been shown to be driven professionally. I absolutely agree that the portrayal of Will as someone who just wanted to make a name for himself was a total waste and did not win him any fans. I think it was a disservice to the character. That is partly what I am referring to when I suggest his character has been wasted. They could have built him as an ethical, conscientious, principled reporter, from the beginning. For instance, what if they had used the fact that Lucas took the fall for Will shooting EJ as a spring board for Will to question the justice system? Maybe he would have been curious to investigate how many men behind bars confessed to crimes they never committed, and why? Maybe that could have tied it into the DiMeras and their fall guys? I don't know. Just a thought off the top of my head.
Will had the Horton name behind him, which, from what I understand, means a lot on this show. Maybe they could have made him the "new" generation's ethical heart beat for the family, a passing of the torch so to speak, from Alice/Tom Horton, onto Will. This would mean no cheating on Sonny, etc. and that ridiculous storyline of Will sleeping with Paul who just happens to be Sonny's ex! Crazy! But I lament about what has already transpired and can't be changed.
I had the impression that everyone went to Alice Horton for advice/support. With Abby and Chad’s situation, it seemed like he was the guy that folks turned to support. If they hadn’t butchered the character so badly, I feel as though Will could have been that Go-To person that characters went to for advice, guidance, and love without judgement. But at this point it is neither here nor there, boo-hoo!

In recent years there's been several stories like that, true. But Nicole's stories in recent years have really been about how she redeemed herself yet everyone was stuck on what she used to do and accused her of all sorts of things. Nicole accepted the job as a journalist after Eric falsely accused her of rape, and she did it specifically because she wanted to clear his name. She then threatened to quit that job because Miles wanted to exploit her connection with Eric to sensationalize what happened to him. She changed her mind because she needed the tools at the office to find Dr. Chyka. She and Daniel went on this whole adventure where she risked her life in order to clear Eric's name, which is why the whole shredding incident should have been a non-issue (and also made no sense.) After that, she investigated Liam to find out what he was doing to Daniel and Jennifer and again risked her life to try to help them, though she just ended up accused of having self-serving motives because Liam knew about the shreds. In between, she helped Daniel protect JJ from what would have been a terribly unfair jail sentence when he saved Theresa's life. Nicole's last adventure as a journalist was to try to find out what Xander and Serena were up to, not in order to get a man but because she knew something fishy was going on. She again almost died as a result. So there have been at least three times where she risked her life in the course of investigating something people didn't want her to know, plus several phone calls with Miles where she did things like tell him she was not covering Sonny's stabbing because she didn't want to exploit a family's tragedy in order to get ratings. Unfortunately this was not developed to its full potential but Nicole certainly had both the ethics and the drive to be a real journalist. Will, on the other hand, had only self-serving ambitions and was exactly what everyone felt a need to constantly accuse Nicole of being. I would have liked to have seen him been mentored by Nicole like JJ is in my story Breaking Ties. Perhaps if he had a mentor like Nicole instead of Zoe Browning, he might have been able to grow past the self-serving behavior.

heroicmuse Well, I think we have to agree to disagree
I like Nicole's dialogues (today she was great with Kate! I didn't know any of that stuff she brought up from Kate's past, yikes!). But her risking her life to help out Eric, or Daniel, etc. I am stuck on. I always feel as though she had an ulterior motive, either she wanted Eric for herself or was trying to get Daniel for herself. Her stories always seem to be focused on a man and really nothing more. Her efforts for Basic Black are the first ones I've seen that are not is some way connected to a man. Finally! Having said that, in soap world people somehow manage to run multinational corporations with no qualifications to do so, ha! ha! Not quite sure what makes Nicole (or Kate) the business moguls they are portrayed as, but once again, as a soap viewer, I am back at suspended disbelief, big time, ha! ha!
I will say, Will's character was slaughtered on this show. He is on the most "wasted opportunity" characters I have ever seen on Daytime. Given the "legacy" value of this character, he should have been better developed from the beginning. But alas, that ship has sailed.

the thing with Nicole's character is that she was sexually abused by her father who made her do pornography and such she's always longed for a man to fall desperately in love with and have a family but then there was her love for money, she left eric to marry lucas because kate gave her a 5 million dollar bribe and when it all went down hill she didn't try and rekindle her true love, she married victor with EJ he was wealthy powerful and good looking sort of the whole package and she lost the baby and faked the rest of the pregnancy because she she didn't trust he'd stay with her if she wasn't carrying his child same story with her and Brady minus the fake pregnancy I agree her storylines have always been about men but I understand why I like the new Nicole working in her element and taking charge as for Will I am sad that they didn't go a different route with his character as well, you're thoughts on him being a reporter could have been really interesting twinklingmoon, too bad you can't apply to be a writer on the show I am sad to see he is gone!

Awww...how nice of you!!! I have grown up watching soaps and probably as a dream job at some point in my life would have found it fascinating to be a soap writer, but alas, that doesn't seem likely Soaps are a dying genre and I have no way to "break in" into the industry, ha! ha! But I guess that's what these forums are for...to let our inner soap writer come out
