This thread was inspired by heroicmuse's upcoming violin lessons. I always wanted to learn to play piano, but my parents couldn't afford a piano when I was little. So my mom ended up getting a loaner accordion and I learned how to play the keyboard on an accordion. I gave a recital to the whole school in 3rd grade. I was 8 years old. I admit that playing an accordion did not satisfy my desire to play piano. So when I was an adult and started working, I bought a piano which I paid for in installments and learned to play. Sorta.

No but I too would LOVE to learn to play the violin. I'm jealous of you heroicmuse. Good luck.

My grandma made me take lessons for her organ for a short time.
Monica started playing the oboe last year in school.

I took piano lessons for 3 or 4 years but I have no musical talent. I am descended from two musical people - the Welsh and the Irish but they cancelled each other out when it came to me. However, I am a great audience!

I'm decent at the piano but it never really interested me. My brother's a professional pianist and both grandmothers were excellent at it (one might have also been a professional had the Great Depression not put an end to her ability to pursue it.)
I got pretty good at the drums but after not playing for three years I've lost a lot of my skills, which is sad. Hopefully I will be able to pick up and maintain some skills on the violin. My biggest challenge after my first lesson is learning to hold it properly. My teacher gave me an assignment of playing some simple notes with my fingers so I can learn the strings prior to starting to use a bow, which I have already picked up, so if I can get more comfortable with holding the instrument I think I will do well.

My mom played piano and let all of us kids give it a whirl. I had a few piano lessons when I was little but I hated it. When I was a teenager I got interested in learning so I practiced until I learned one song. Then I lost interest again. If I had a piano I'd probably get back into it again. I have an acoustic guitar that I was teaching myself to play about 25 years ago. I keep telling myself I'll get back to it.

I had five years of piano lessons and not much to show for it. I read the music long enough to memorize my pieces. I hate reading music and it is not easy for me. I understand music theory and did all the workbooks. I have perfect pitch. I don't like my voice because I am half way between a second soprano and alto. It should be no surprise that I have a "Rainy Days & Mondays" kind of voice. I have had about a year of guitar lessons. My fingers don't seem to stretch where they need to for certain chords. I have a ukelele which I can play much better than anything else however I need a better one that actually stays tuned. The pegs that stretch the strings don't hold them in place very well. If I ever buy a newer uke I might actually practice. I suppose I could practice more on guitar. The good news on both of them is they have something called tablature that shows the chord fingering for the songs instead of having to read music. Aaron is really good on guitar and has played in bands. My mother played piano and organ very well. My dad played the trumpet.
