His shocking news better be something like he doesn't like vegetables on his pizza--I don't think we can handle anything too traumatic! Thanks for the previews, boss!

Chapter 58a
Philip was fairly furious with the doctor for “planting” that seed in his mind a few days before. In her attempt to assuage his anger, she only exacerbated it. She definitely overstepped her bounds, suggesting that Chloe might not be the right woman for him. Who the hell did she think she was? God? He had more than enough self-doubt without wondering whether he was in the right relationship.
All this time, he’d been trying to make their relationship work, and now she comes along and makes it seem like he’s not only on the wrong train track, but that he’s in the wrong train station altogether. Sometimes he wondered if this was the doctor’s attempt to prolong the therapy, send them back to Square One, build an addiition onto her house or buy a boat with the money she was raking in. Up to now, both Philip and Chloe were under the impression that they were making great progress. They talked a lot over the last couple months — both privately as a couple, and in therapy — and broke through some painful barriers.
But Dr. Richards in her own roundabout way said that Chloe might never overcome her trust issues. She said it in such a way that made it seem like she wasn’t violating any confidences, like she was trying to help Philip. Ha! If that’s her idea of help, she must be drinking the same KoolAid as his mother and father.
If it was true that Chloe would never be able to trust Philip, that meant he would forever be sitting on the precipice, waiting for her to accuse him of something he didn’t do. Waiting for their relationship to fall apart. Again. He wasn’t sure he could live in that kind of limbo, no matter how much he loved her.
Tonight he could hardly even look at Chloe without thinking of the doctor’s insinuation. Was Chloe really not good enough for him? Could he do better? Was his self-esteem so low that he ended up in relationships that would only hurt him?
He briefly glanced at Chloe in the seat next to him and for the first time in his life, he didn’t see the beautiful woman he always carried in his mind's eye. Instead, he saw anger and pain and bitterness and distrust. Those were not just concepts. They were real, and they were right here sitting next to him in the orchestra section of the Chicago Opera House. Philip had given his heart and soul to Chloe and had been completely devoted to her. He'd done nothing to cause her to doubt him, and despite it all, she did doubt him. Philip struggled to deny it, to excuse it, and to shrug it away, but it was proving useless. Dr. Richards was right. Philip deserved better.

What a tough chapter! I think Philip needs to be aware of the pain he's carrying around in order to build a good relationship with Chloe....but he also needs to get back to Dr Richards ASAP before he wrecks what he and Chloe have. (Or maybe a visit with George would help?)

Oh no! I knew this would happen.... Philip missed the point altogether. It's not that he deserves better. It's that he needs to love Chloe trust issues and all, not just the idealized version of her he has in his head. So I guess from that point of view, the fact that the blinders are off is a good thing. But he is going to sabotage things so he'd better hurry back to therapy.

I think Philip may need more of an in depth explanation than the one he got, as it seems he's completely missed the point. Hopefully, he gets to see Dr. Richards again soon! Great chapter, Kpatch!

I hate that Phillip thinks this Dr Richards really did a number on him I hope he snaps out of it and realizes the point before something bad happens

Philip and Chloe need to have an honest conversation. Chloe probably has no idea that Philip is so angry and upset.

Chapter 58b
Philip struggled to deny it, to excuse it, and to shrug it away, but it was proving useless. Dr. Richards was right. Philip deserved better.
Argh. He squeezed his eyes shut. “Make it stop,” he said out loud.
“What? Philip, are you okay?” Chloe touched his hand, shifting in her seat and noticing people in the audience shooting glances at them. “What’s the matter?”
“Nothing,” Philip said angrily, pulling his hand away.
“It’s not nothing, Philip. You’ve been acting weird for days.”
He turned his head and looked at her blankly. “What are we doing, Chloe?”
She scowled, asking, “What do you mean what are we doing? We planned this date weeks ago. We’re waiting for the opera to start.”
He shook his head slowly. “That’s not what I mean. I meant you and me. Should we even be here?” The words were coming out of his mouth as if he had no control over them, and before he knew it, he said things he couldn’t take back. “I don’t mean here in the theater. I mean should we even be together. At all.”
Chloe looked at Philip intently, her eyes widening. “What? Where is….” Her eyes filled with tears. “Where is this coming from, Philip?”
“I’ve just been thinking,” he said, facing forward so he wouldn’t have to look at the hurt in her eyes. “Maybe we’re all wrong for each other. We want to believe we’re meant to be, but maybe we’re all wrong and that’s why everything has always been a struggle for us. We make each other miserable.”
Leaning away, Chloe’s voice cracked. “Are you saying … you’re miserable?”
Philip didn’t answer, but his stiff posture spoke volumes.
“You can go to hell, Philip,” Chloe said, tossing her Playbill at him before jumping out of her seat and running up the aisle toward the exit.
Philip didn’t turn around or call after her or try to stop her. Dozens of eyes were on him, but he didn’t move from his seat. He just continued to face front, his breathing getting heavier as his emotions intensified.
The house lights dimmed, the curtain parted and the prima donna began her aria.

What was he thinking? What he said (and didn't say) was hurtful enough, but to open all that up in public....where there would be no opportunity to explain or discuss....not a smart move. Good luck to Dr Richards in straightening this mess out.....she's going to need it!

Oh no! Dr. Richards should not have stirred this up without also giving Philip instructions on how to deal with the feelings she was touching on. Philip should have discussed his feelings with Chloe right away and not waited til he was about to explode, and certainly not in a crowded theatre. What a mess!

Wow! I really hope that Philip is able to fix this, but it's gonna take some time. Great chapter, Kpatch.
