"Days" fans, it's less than five weeks (less than 25 episodes) until the new head writers debut, and less than six weeks until the first returns begin at the end of August!
Here's a recap of the upcoming cast changes fans can look forward to. Judi Evans (Adrienne), Mary Beth Evans (Kayla) and Wally Kurth (Justin) have all signed contracts and will be appearing more frequently. Bill Hayes (Doug) and Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie), the two actors with the longest history on "Days", will be appearing on a more regular basis. Camila Banus (Gabi), Tamara Braun (Ava), Jason Cook (Shawn), Martha Madison (Belle), Stephen Nichols (Steve), Thaao Penghlis (Andre), Peter Reckell (Bo) and Alison Sweeney (Sami) will all be reprising their roles. In addition, expect some of the current long-running cast members, such as Kristian Alfonso (Hope), Deidre Hall (Marlena) and Drake Hogestyn (John), to take on a more prominent role in storylines.
"One Life to Live" actor John-Paul Lavoisier will be debuting as Philip Kiriakis, the son of Victor and Kate. "Santa Barbara" actor A Martinez will be debuting in a yet-to-be-disclosed role as someone with ties to several people in Salem (in several tweets from the actor, it seems that he will be playing Gabi and Rafe's father, but this is yet to be confirmed). "All My Children" actress Sal Stowers will be debuting as Lani (in an audition posted online, Lani supposedly is a former romantic interest of Chad's, but this is yet to be confirmed).
Contest winner Alexander Bruszt debuts as Finn, a new Australian doctor in town. The newly-aged generation of "Days" includes James Lastovic as Joey (Steve and Kayla's son) and Olivia Rose Keegan as Claire (Shawn and Belle's daughter). The actors playing the newly-aged Ciara Brady and Theo Carver will be announced at a later date.
The current storylines will start being wrapped up at the end of August. Cast exits announced so far, which will take place throughout the end of summer and into the fall, include Melissa Archer (Serena), Daniel Cosgrove (Aiden), True O'Brien (Paige), James Read (Clyde), Freddie Smith (Sonny) and Paul Telfer (Xander)."
Other than losing Sonny ... this is the DOOL that I have been waiting YEARS to see! Doug and Julie should be front and center in Salem. Susan Hayes has been on this show for over 45 years - that's longer than like half of the cast has been alive. She and Bill Hays (in my opinion) are one of the core reasons that this show became popular and made its place into TV history. (I think the picture in my avatar says it all!) And not only are they on-screen DOOL history, they're off-screen history.
I am incredibly happy that Clyde will be gone too! James Read is wonderful and, like almost all characters they created, Tomlin/Whitesell absolutely squandered his potential. It is beyond ridiculous that Stefano and Victor are afraid of Clyde. what? Stefano has at one point kidnapped/killed/tortured every resident in Salem. Who could possibly get the best of him? And Victor tried to kill his own son, in addition to many, many other crimes he's committed ... including going after his current wife's daughter when she was dating Pete! And then when they made Clyde an unrepentant child molester and someone who threatens innocent babies and children, I was instantly turned off and I'll never be a fan of the character (despite that the actor is incredibly talented!) I'm glad he (the character, not the actor) is out too.

The only exit I'm happy about is Serena. Not happy about Aiden, Clyde, Paige or Sonny. I don't like Clyde as a character, but I do love watching the actor. He's one of the best actors on the show. They really should have done his character differently so he'd have long term potential. Thanks for posting.

I agree unavitasegreta. I'm doing my happy dance that Clyde will be gone, despite enjoying James Read as an actor. No more horrible "love" between Clyde and Kate, or Clyde teaching Ben how to spy on Abby or any of the other BS Clyde has gotten up to recently. And no more ridiculous hillbilly stereotype! Also really really REALLY happy that Doug and Julie will have the prominent role they deserve. I'm still heartbroken about Aiden but I guess they were letting us down gently by having Hope/Aiden on so infrequently. |

I think it's interesting that he says Daniel Cosgrove's exit has been announced because up to this point I thought it had only been said that people heard it at a fan event. When and where was it officially announced? I know he's usually accurate but I just haven't seen it officially announced.
I'm very disappointed with his exit. I have ZERO interest in a Bo and Hope reunion. I hope this "new" show doesn't consist entirely of older couples. By "older" I'm not talking about age BTW. They need to have a balanced mix of old and new. That's the problem in my opinion. You still need SOME new.

Freddie Smith's exit isn't a decision by the new writers. The actor chose to leave at the end of his contract. Has there been any word about Sonny being recast?
This is the first I've heard of Clyde leaving. I want Stefano to find out Clyde is responsible for EJ'S murder.
The exit I was hoping for is Ben.
How many of these returns are short term? I don't think they can afford to have all of these characters on a long term contract.

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere. Peter Reckell returns as Bo on September 8th.
Does anyone know if Sami is a short-term return or long-term? Please say short!

Thanks for the info Kpatch. I expect her return to be short term. Ali seems to be keeping busy with her Hallmark movies. I don't know if she would even want to return full time right now. |

I think it was short-term, but it sounds like she made a few appearances. I've heard Ali has been doing some movies and other stuff, so that gives me hope that her returns will be sporadic and short. But to be safe ... let's all go say a prayer together!

I read that she's leaving Biggest Loser, and that's what made me start to worry that her stint on Days may be longer than I'd like. |

I think she's got a lot of different things going on. The movies, books, her kids. I think it's just a short term thing.
