He always said his band would put something out so I think he took a break from acting to focus on singing. I mean Patrick Dempsey to a 20 year break from acting & now he is bigger then ever! I know Jay isn't doing a 9-5 job lol

It's not just Days though. He seems to have quit acting completely and maybe even dropped out of society, judging by the way he looked when he arrived at the premiere of Runaway Hearts (not just the hair and beard, but the way he was dressed). He hasn't done any acting that we know of since 2012 when he filmed Runaway Hearts. No disrespect meant to Jay, you all know I love him, but he's 37 and for a leading man, the clock is ticking.
I have to believe that he was offered the opportunity to come back. It would be in the best interest of everyone to bring back a fan favorite. Either he refused or they couldn't find him. They've been announcing returns for months, which to me means, they tried very hard to get him back and a recast was the last resort, not the first.
To me, there will always be only one Philip. I expect I will view Lavoisier's performance the same way I viewed Kyle Brandt's — as playing a different character who happens to have the same name. I still feel ill, by the way.

I was hoping for JKJ to come back. I loved his portrayal of Phillip. This guy is cute, but the jury's gonna be out for a while on whether or not he fits the role. JP has some mighty big shoes to fill.

Couldn't have said it better myself, and I totally agree with all you say and your assumption about the recast being the last resort because they couldn't get Jay back. I kinda see why Jay may have been reluctant about returning, since when he did the last time, they short changed him on all they promised. And my feeling is the same, "I will view Lavoisier's performance the same way I viewed Kyle Brandt's — as playing a different character who happens to have the same name." Not happy at all about the recast and Jay not returning. Jay is and will always be Philip!

I am really curious to know if the show approached Jay about returning. Maybe Martha Madison will mention in it since host some internet radio show about soaps.

Jay has not dropped off the face of the earth! That much I can tell you! As an actor, you can have the BEST representation in the world but if there aren't roles out that that fit you, there isn't much you can do about it, but work harder. Patrick Dempsey took a stepped away from acting and came back better then ever! Just don't give up on Jay

I don’t mean to split hairs, but there’s a big difference between Patrick Dempsey and Jay Johnson. According to IMDB, Patrick never left the screen. He has worked nearly every year since 1985, even when he wasn’t in leading roles, and before transitioning to Grey’s Anatomy in 2005. Patrick Dempsey on IMDBThe same cannot be said for Jay. The parts Jay took right after leaving were way beneath him. Joey and Melissa?? Undercover Bridesmaid?? Runaway Hearts had potential and I hear Jay was fantastic in it, but Jay didn’t even show up for the dubs. Distribution has stagnated and who knows if we’ll ever have the chance to see the film. I say he’s not working in entertainment anymore and only one thing can prove me wrong — hearing about his career, whether it’s singing, songwriting, or acting. I want only the best for him both personally and in whatever profession he chooses.

Everyone has different ideas as to what is "best for someone else". If Jay chooses to do a project that we don't necessarily like him in, isn't really our place to judge. I'm sure he did it bc he wanted to. I mean no one held a gun to his head and said he had to do those projects. He's doing exactly what he wants to be doing

Right, that was just my opinion. I just know his talent and I believe he could do way better. Some people might say I've had jobs that didn't take advantage of my talents also. As a fan and supporter, I just want to see him in roles that showcase his talent.

Well, this answers the "What Would Kpatch Think" question I've had since I read this news. I felt the same way seeing his picture and trying to make him fit into the Phillip character. It just didn't jive. But I'm holding final judgment when we do get to see him onscreen.

As a fan and supporter, I just want to see him in roles that showcase his talent. I know I have had jobs that really didn't showcase my talent at all. The entertainment industry is SO hard and SO tricky. I mean Im having to take roles and do things I may not want to do but its building my resume. Jay taking a huge, much needed break from acting isn't the end of the world lol He still has plenty of time to do more acting and stuff with his music. Sometimes being an actor isn't all it's cracked up to be........

I wasn't impressed with John-Paul on Dirty Soap. I've never watched OLTL. I'm not looking forward to this at all.

I still can't decide how I feel about JPL playing Philip. He seems less "mature" ... does that make sense? I've always thought Philip was a grown up. So when he was with Melanie, it was gross (like Brady was with her) because she was this little girl. But I could see JPL with Melanie because he seems much younger. So maybe they are pulling Philip down into the younger set again? I wouldn't mind that, actually. We'll see how it goes, but I am glad that the character will be back in town!
