My biggest problem with Phelanie is that she never devoted herself entirely to him. There was always that nagging pull toward Nathan (IS SHE CRAZY???) that almost prevented her from marrying Philip and kept her from being completely happy with him. Philip said it himself. "I gave her everything, and this is what she does?" You read my mind Kpatch! That was exactly the problem I had with their relationship.

"I gave her everything, and this is what she does?" You read my mind Kpatch! That was exactly the problem I had with their relationship. You guys need to watch the last scenes of Phelanie before she found out about the cheating. Melanie was devoted and happy. Philip was chosen and loved and knew it. The show went around a long protracted bend, in the name of supposed suspense, to get to the main idea. They were in love with each other and wanted to be together. Nathan was just a lame plot device that they milked to the hilt for angst. Mate scenes never led to anything or went anywhere. Almost all semi intense moments were witnessed by Philip or Stephanie - because they were for their benefit and not to propel Mate. Melanie was never going to leave Philip for Nathan. They kept trying to make it seem like she was unsure or that she wanted to be with Nathan. Yet it never went anywhere...on purpose...because Philip was the one and it would have derailed the story.

Then why did she tell Nathan she loved him? It couldn't be just because she thought she might be dying.
P.S.: Melanie has some amazing dreams. Wish mine were that vivid.

Then why did she tell Nathan she loved him? I couldn't be just because she thought she might be dying. P.S.: Melanie has some amazing dreams. Wish mine were that vivid. Well yes near death and fever played a part for her being so forthcoming, And she did basically take it right back after she said it. In my opinion I think she did love him. You can love more than one person. But you decide to be in a relationship with just the one. Her love for Nathan was not enough to overpower her love for Philip however. Nathan was second choice plain and simple. He was Melanie's Dawson (Dawson's Creek) or her Noel (Felicity). The clues that the ILY was a sweeps driven plot device were that she never told him she loved him again...and nothing changed for Mate once she left quarantine. Angelatil made this good point (and I hope she comes here and expands on it) that we were looking at the Mate quarantine from the Mate perspective as if it were a jumping off point for more. But they were not even alone in that quarantine for long. The ILY moment was very brief, and the close comforting moments were witnessed by Philip. Again it was for his benefit. (and for ours - once again we saw Melanie CHOOSE Philip over Nathan.) Philip knows that Melanie has feelings for Nathan and in the beginning he was fearing she was cheating or she would leave him. So now he sees Melanie locked away with Nathan for hours on end in a near death experience. He definitely must have been fearing that something would happen between them in there. Melanie gets out of the quarantine....and she doesn't leave him....she says she is ready to start a family with him. ON top of that she finds out about Vivian and the shady Kiriakis stuff and she totally ACCEPTS IT and tells him she will forgive him always. And with that Philip knows securely that Melanie had made her choice. It was the last piece to his story of finally being chosen, accepted and loved. Cue the angst bomb. LOL The fact that Melanie had feelings for Nathan didn't lessen Phelanie's relationship it actually strengthened it and proved the point more emphatically. Melanie had two guys that she cared a great deal about in love with her. And she CHOSE to be with Philip Kiriakis. Repeatedly. What better way to show how wanted a person is than to pit him against an adversary and have him come out the winner. Philip's character has always been second choice...so to finally make him a first choice...there had to be an actual choice to make. Therefore, Nathan was necessary to do that. Another clue that mate was just a tool. Nathan was not even in a triangle with Philip. The triangle was Philip, Melanie, Daniel. Mate was the catalyst that made phloe sex happen, and the mate moments witnessed by Philip were the fuel to keep his insecurities simmering until the right moment...but nothing more. The man whose opinion he worried about, the man he fought with, the man he was most scared would ensure his losing Melanie....was Daniel. And in the end the main reason Melanie divorced Philip....was Daniel.

Slyn, thank you and thank Angelatil for your explanation. I love the way you analyze the situation so thoroughly. Thank you. Analysis and speculation are the only way I can watch tv and keep my sanity. It must be the English major in me. Angela is going to post something on this topic. So hopefully we can keep her talking. LOL
