Does anyone know if there's any rule about who says I love you first — the guy or the girl?
In soaps, it seems like it's the guy 90% of the time. But does it have to be? I'm working on a story where the girl says it first and it works better for story purposes. But I was just wondering if anyone knew if there was a rule, because I found out the hard way that yes, there are rules when you are writing a romance novel. Didn't see a rule about who says ILY first, however.

I don't know that there's really any hard and fast rule. I think that in most romances it's the guy first because supposedly guys are less emotional so it means more if he says it. But I personally like to read romances that are non-traditional, especially if they're true to character.

I think guys usually say it first. I suspect that's because many girls may be afraid of scaring off a guy.

Most books I've read the woman says it first, but I don't read romance novels, so maybe there is a difference in that genre.

I think it really depends on the circumstances in the story. If the guy has put everything out there to show the girl he cares but she keeps rebuffing him, to have her come to the realization and make her say it first goes a lot further than the guy just blurting it out at some random time.
If both are dealing with past hurts and scared of what may follow when those words are said, then I don't think it really matters which one says it first because at that point it's going to be who is willing to put their fears aside and go for it.
