I have just stumbled upon this thread and only briefly skimmed the comments, but I agree with what's been said.
I think budget cuts have really impacted daytime t.v. in a bad way. Rushed storylines do not help with ratings, at least I don't think they generate and maintain audiences. I mean, what was the whole point of the Serena storyline, or Xander, or even Melanie coming to town (or the so-called mystery surrounding her return. *rolls eyes* Really, she got caught counting cards at a casino and that was her big mysterious return?), and of course what was the point of the Jordan character? First they try to make it all mysterious that we don't know her real name, then we learn she has an issue with trusting (men in particular) but her boyfriend who is a detective can't figure out why, and then we finally get the big reveal that her step-father raped her (which really wasn't a big surprise when we were finally told the secret) and to my knowledge nothing became of that secret. I don't think any other character learned about Clyde and Jordan's past...no one knows what happened between them, not Rafe, not Ben, not Chad, and not even Kate who made it mission to learn Jordan's secret. And then, bam! Jordan is out of the show. What the heck is the point of all of these random characters when we don't develop them or connect them to overall story archs with depth. Wouldn't we be better off developing the few characters we have?
These budget cuts are getting really bad on Days, I think. I understand they tape 6 months in advance, so basically if they are starting a storyline that really isn't going well with the fans they are stuck with a 6 month commitment to the story. The actors don't really get time to rehearse, and let's not forget that same tired blue-gray room that is used as the 'set-of-all-trades.' I swear, the same room is used as the hospital coffee break room, Marlena's office, Hope's office, Roman's office, Abby's office and Jennifer's office. It looks like they just move the furniture around. The windows and doors are always in the same place!
Oh, and the flashbacks are crazy!!!! Given that they have such limited airtime as they try to squeeze in more commercials every second of airtime is precious. We don't have any airtime to waste on flashbacks, especially on things we saw literally the episode before. For instance, between Abby and Chad (and now even Ben) how many more times are we going to have to view the one night Chad and Abby spent together? IIRC in the past Days used to do a lot of "characters-talking-to-themselves" as an inner monologue for the audiences to hear the characters' thoughts. That drove me crazy, which is why I never watched Days at that time. Now these flashbacks are killing me!!!
Yet here I am, still watching. But honesty, I watch most of it on YT cuz I can't waste my time on these flashbacks (or characters I find boring. I mean, how many times do I have to hear Eve say "I have to keep JJ away from Paige." Really Eve? You need to get a life (and a job) separate from your daughter, pronto!
Thanks for listening to my rant
