Chapter 63a
“Then we can make it work,” she insisted.
“Chloe….”
Chloe covered her ears with her hands. “If there’s a but coming, I don’t want to hear it.”
Philip touched the hand that was closest to him and gently pulled it away from her ear, then he held her hand in his. “I’m sorry, Chloe, but you know as well as I do that a kiss is just a kiss. We’re not wide-eyed teenagers anymore. We’ve both been around the block and we both know that sometimes love just isn’t enough.”
“I don’t want to believe that,” she said between sobs. She looked over at Philip. “Not when it’s you. Not when it’s us. You promised.”
Philip’s brow knit. “If you’re talking about until death do us part, we both made promises….”
“No, not that. You promised me you’d never give up on us.”
He did a double-take and stammered, “Wh— What are you talking about?”
“After my seizure. You were sitting at my bedside in the hospital holding my hand and you promised you’d never give up on us.”
Philip blinked several times. “I … I didn’t realize you remembered that,” he said quietly. “But Chloe, I’m not the one who gave up. You did.”
“No I didn’t.” She reached into the collar of her blouse and pulled a chain out, the chain holding the dog tag. “See this? It means I never truly gave up on us.” She could tell by the way Philip was staring at the medallion that he was touched to see her still wearing it. “That’s right Philip, I still wear it, in spite of everything, even though you told me to take it off because it didn’t mean anything anymore. Because it does. It means everything to me. See, this proves we’ve come too far to ever be over.” She looked up toward the ceiling of the plane. “God I sound like a crazy obsessed character out of Fatal Attraction.”
“Well if it makes you feel any better, no one does obsession better than me. Ask Belle and Shawn,” he said sardonically. He leaned his head back and quietly said, “When I gave you that dog tag, I said it was a symbol of trust. It’s lost its meaning.”
Through watery eyes, Chloe looked down at the medallion and she knew Philip was right. But at the same time, she believed he was wrong. “It can’t end like this, Philip. I can’t imagine living the rest of my life without you. There’s no one I want to be with but you.”
Philip swallowed hard. His voice cracked when he said, “Me either. But, Chloe, it wasn’t working.”
“Yes it was. It was perfect,” she protested.
“No sweetheart, it wasn’t.” He spoke calmly, too calmly, Chloe thought. “If it was perfect, you wouldn’t have come up with a reason to push me out.”

You really know how to tear at my Phloe heartstrings Kpatch. I'm glad they are being honest even though some of it's hard to hear.

At least Chloe and Philip are being honest with each other. But, somebody should really get Dr. Richards in for this conversation. Great chapter, Kpatch!

If they'd listened to our ideas and had Dr. Richards on the plane, I think things would be going a lot better. But it does seem like they're moving past the punches and getting to the emotions under the surface! Can't wait to see what happens next.

Chapter 63b
Philip swallowed hard. His voice cracked when he said, “Me either. But, Chloe, it wasn’t working.”
“Yes it was. It was perfect,” she protested.
“No sweetheart, it wasn’t.” He spoke calmly, too calmly, Chloe thought. “If it was perfect, you wouldn’t have come up with a reason to push me out.”
“No, this isn’t happening,” she wept.
He shifted in his seat to face her. She could barely stand to look into his eyes; those eyes she looked into thousands of times had always looked into her own eyes with utter adoration — but not anymore. Now he only looked at her with pity. Holding her hand and clasping it between both of his, he spoke compassionately. “I … I know that’s not the answer you expected or wanted to hear and I’d give anything if … look, I don’t want to hate you Chloe. And I don’t hate you — yet. But if I have to go through anything like this again, then I will. I’ll hate you. I’ll hate us, and our whole history will be poisoned.” He paused to kiss her knuckles. “Sweetheart, the most important thing we have going for us is Parker. He needs us to at least get along, and right now, I can do that. Know what I mean? I can interact with you in a civil way, and that’s good.” Philip stopped talking abruptly. He released her hand, took a deep breath and leaned his head back on the seat’s head rest.
Chloe watched him, waiting for him to say more, but when she realized there was nothing more to say, she looked away. Squeezing her eyelids tightly, the tears flowed freely. This heartache felt so familiar to her, much like the time she begged and pleaded with Daniel to take her back after he learned about her one-night stand with Philip. Daniel shut her down completely. But this wasn’t Daniel this time, it was Philip.
She was so sure that Philip would agree to a reconciliation. In fact, she probably always thought that all she had to do was say the word and they’d be back together, that the ball was in her court the whole time, and she was in control. What a rude awakening it was to find out she had no control at all. The only upper hand she had was the one she used to destroy her marriage.

Poor Philip--that was probably the hardest thing he's ever had to say to Chloe...

Chloe doesn't realize that for a long time Philip would have taken her back if she asked.
Chloe needs to heal before she can move forward with Philip or anyone.
