Chapter 7a
Atlanta Airport, January 2015
“I mean, if Philip was so thrilled with his life with me,” Chloe surmised, “he wouldn’t be drinking all the time, you know?”
Nicole stared at her nearly empty glass. “Yeah, I know what you mean,” she sighed. “So, have you actually filed paperwork?”
“Yes,” Chloe nodded. “We also have a temporary custody arrangement in place for Parker.”
Nicole’s eyes widened. “Parker! Oh no, I forgot about Parker. That poor kid.”
Chloe covered her face and the tears finally started flowing. “Oh God, I know. That’s the worst part, we’re splitting up his family. My poor little angel is a mess. He gets aggressive with other little children and he never used to be like that.” She moved her hands from her face to the sides of her head so she could look at Nicole. “You know Philip and I even disagree on how to parent Parker?”
“So it’s not just one thing.” Nicole’s eyes filled with tears in sympathy for her friend.
“Right,” Chloe agreed. “It’s everything.”
Nicole reached for Chloe’s hand again. “Is there anything I can do, girlfriend?”
Chloe shook her head no. “Not unless you have a magic wand. I can’t believe this is happening Nicole, especially to me and Philip. I mean, I’m 32 years old and this will be my fourth divorce.”
“Sucks.”
“I know. This was supposed to be it, Nicole,” she wept. “Philip and me were supposed to be the endgame. We talked about that all the time, how we had to get through all our other relationships just so we could find our way back to each other. Philip was supposed to be the one that worked out, the happily ever after.”
“Happily ever after, huh? That’s how fairy tales end.”
Chloe blew her nose with a napkin. “Our fairy tale ended, that’s for sure.”
“I don’t know what else to say, kiddo,” Nicole said, out of advice and booze at the same time. “Maybe you guys just don’t like being married.”
“Not me,” Chloe disagreed. “I loved being married to Philip. We had some amazing times, at least in the beginning, before…” Chloe stopped herself from talking about the other woman. “To be honest, I wasn’t in any hurry to marry Philip, because of my track record. I was happy just the way we were and didn’t need a piece of paper to feel any more committed to the relationship. But you know Philip. He was anxious for us to be married,” she told Nicole. “And everything was perfect for us, euphoric even. We had fun, we had romance, we had Parker. We had the same goals and were working toward the same things. There was all this history and we knew each other so well.” She leaned her cheek on her palm and sighed. “It felt so good to be with a man I loved and felt comfortable with and could just be myself around. I mean we know all each other’s stories, the good, the bad, the ugly. You know?”
“Actually no,” Nicole said. “None of my long-term relationships have been long term.”

Sadly it sounds like they are having multiple problems. I'm glad Chloe is able to open up to Nicole.

So there's definitely more to this story than it seems. I am glad that Chloe has someone to talk to. Can't wait to see what you've got next for us, Kpatch!

Chapter 7b
“Actually no,” Nicole said. “None of my long-term relationships have been long term.”
“Neither have mine. Philip’s my longest relationship and we haven’t even been in a relationship for all that long.” Chloe thought about how it was more like pockets of romance rather than one continuous relationship. “Even so, being married to Philip felt like the finish line after this long, grueling race. I figured we earned the right to relax and let our hair down.”
“And?”
Chloe straightened up on her stool. “And you can’t. You can’t ever relax,” she stated as if she was teaching a class. “Marriage takes work — tons of it — and, crazy as it sounds, I don’t think either of us was expecting that.”
Nicole sighed heavily. “So? What now?”
Chloe reached into the purse slung on her chair and took out some more tissues. She’d learned to travel with lots of tissues these days. “We wait for the divorce to be final.”
“When will that happen?”
“Soon,” Chloe replied. “A few weeks, maybe a month.”
“And what then? You’re never gonna see each other again?”
“Well we have to,” Chloe reminded Nicole. “For Parker. We’ve worked out a schedule.”
“Hmmm. Must be weird though,” Nicole said, stealing a Kleenex from Chloe’s stash and dabbing her eyes. “I mean because you two were really good friends, right?”
“That’s the hardest part, Nicole. In the old days, Philip’s the one I would have confided in about the end of my marriage. I can’t even do that.” She laughed sadly. “I keep almost calling him just to talk, and then I remember that we’re not friends anymore. I think I almost miss Philip’s friendship more than anything, you know?” She paused and an image of Philip flitted through her mind followed by another and another until she was lost in her memories. “That, and the way he wears a suit. And his aftershave and the way his shirts smell. And the way we kiss. The way he looks at me like no one else ever has. His gentle touch. And how he licks his lips when he’s anticipating something amazing is going to happen. I miss the way he sings to Parker. The little sound he makes when he.…”
“Oh man, Chloe. You’re still head over heels in love with him,” Nicole observed.
Chloe nodded slowly. “You know, even with everything, I thought he’d fight for me, for us I mean,” she said dabbing at her own tears with a tissue. “But he didn’t. He agreed to the divorce right away. He gave up so easily, Nicole.”
“But you wanted it? You said you didn’t give him a choice,” Nicole reminded her.
“You’re right, I didn’t. I still … I don’t know. I go back and forth,” Chloe rubbed her nose with her tissue. “Sometimes I’m so sure this is the right thing to do, but sometimes, sometimes I want to just forget the whole thing and go back to the way we were.”
“If that’s even possible. Do you think he’s in love with that girl … the other woman, I mean, since he gave up so fast. Maybe she’s the reason,” Nicole guessed. But before Chloe had a chance to answer, Nicole’s phone vibrated. “One sec,” she said looking at the display. “Oh! Shoot. They’re boarding my flight ahead of schedule. I gotta get to the gate.” Nicole quickly slid off the stool and gathered her belongings. “Listen, call me. Anytime. I’ll be back in Salem in a few days. Maybe we can meet up somewhere.”
Chloe nodded and leaned into Nicole as she put her arm around Chloe and said, “Take care of you, okay?”

The fact that Philip gave up so easily reads to me like some kind of blackmail or something is going on.
