from daytime royalty daytimeroyaltyonline.com/topic/8537935/1/#newSOW: Freddie Smith at a Glance; July 12, 2011 Issue Freddie Smith is the newest cast member to join DAYS, playing the role of Adrienne and Justin's gay son, Sonny. The actor talks about his new gig and the welcome reception he's received in Salem. SOW: Were you told that Sonny was gay before you auditioned?Smith: Yes, it was in the character description, so they explained the whole thing. It was exciting. I was pumped to audition for it, so I'm glad I got it. SOW: What did you find appealing or challenging about the character?Smith: Sonny has traveled the world and he has an open mind. It's why he is so comfortable with being openly gay. He knows what he wants and who he wants to be with. He doesn't let society bring him down. I love how he's so positive. SOW: What kind of feedback are you getting on the set?Smith: I actually had the set [acting] coach tell me today, "I feel like you've been more positive after playing Sonny." For the past two months, I've been reading Sonny's lines and he's always so happy. It makes me, as a person, that much more on my game. I'm getting consumed with him, which is great because we're joining together and making a character out of it. SOW: You played a gay character, Marco, on 90210. Are you concerned about getting typecast?Smith: They're two different characters. I really don't think it will typecast me. I think gay or sraight, doing two straight roles or two gay roles, it's just sexual orientation [they have in common]. They're really two different characters. I'm not afraid of being typecast, especially with such a good role as Sonny. SOW: What are some other roles that you've played?Smith: I did a co-star appearance on Medium back in 2007. I was this punk kid trying to get two girls high in the backseat. That was my first on-screen role. I also did a short film where I played a jock. That's about it, other than commercials. So I'm basically just starting out. SOW: DAYS is in a state of transition. Did the current team or the previous one hire you?Under the other team. I think the new team has been here maybe a month and I've been here for a little over two months. SOW: At the moment you're talking, your first show is about to air in 10 minutes. Are you excited?Smith: Yes. For such a long time, my coming on the show was a little bit of a secret because the show wanted to make it a surprise. So it's nice to be able to get on Twitter and be tweeting with people. SOW: What are your thoughts so far on your cast mates, like Chandler Massey and your on-screen parents, Wally Kurth and Judi Evans?Smith: Chandler Massey is so talented. The whole cast is great. It's the best any actor can ask for. When the people you work with are amazing, it brings out even better stuff in you. I did some of my first scenes with [Wally and Judi]. I really got to talk to them about everything. They made me feel very comfortable. They're also hilarious. I could easily spend every day working with them.
