The Horton Living Room

The front doorbell rings again. Bo opens the door.

Bo: You’re not who I was expecting either.
Ben: Where’s Abby? I need to see her. It’s important.
Abigail comes up behind Ben.
Abigail: Ben, I’m right here. I was out on the front porch and you ran right past me.
Ben: Abby! Thank God. I need to talk to you.
Abigail: First of all, it’s Abigail, not Abby. If I told you once, I told you a gezillion times.
Ben: Sorry.
Abigail: Second, how could you not see me sitting out there on the porch? I mean, I know I’m little and cute. I’m even smaller than Melanie here, but I’m not invisible.
Ben: I guess my mind was somewhere else.
Melanie: Abigail, aren’t you gonna introduce me to your handsome friend?
Philip rolls his eyes.
Abigail: Not on your life!
Ben: Can we go somewhere private and talk?
Abigail: Of course. Let’s go upstairs.
Ben starts to follow her upstairs.
Abigail: Wait. My mom is upstairs with Maggie and Julie. And JJ is in his room with Paige.
Melanie: And some crazy lady named Eve is upstairs too.
Abigail: In that case, let’s go to the backyard.
Hope: My father is out there singing.
Abigail: Oh. Then, the kitchen. Please tell me no one else is in the kitchen.
Melanie: I was going to get a soft drink and make my grandmother a sandwich and get Julie a donut.
Abigail: That will have to wait. This is much more important. Come on, Benjamin.
Ben: It’s Ben, not Benjamin.

Teresa follows Father Louie inside to the parish office.
Father Louie: Here we go. Here’s the job application for you to complete. I have afternoon mass, so…
Teresa: Um. The agency didn’t tell me what kind of job it is.
Father: It’s the church lady. The church secretary.
Teresa: No, I don’t really think I’m right for the job.
Father: What kind of experience do you have?
Teresa: Oh. Um. I worked at Salem University Hospital for a year. First in Public Relations, then Human Resources.
Father: Sounds perfect to me.
Teresa: It does?


JJ’s Bedroom
JJ: Remember when you eavesdropped on my Aunt Kayla telling someone she was raped?
Paige: I wasn’t eavesdropping. I accidentally overheard for a long time.
JJ: Whatever. It… Jeez, I don’t know if I can say the words out loud.
Paige: Just say it really fast and get it over with.
JJ: My dad is the one. He’s the one who raped my Aunt Kayla.
Paige: What??? You just said … you said they were married.
JJ: Right. He forced himself on her.
Paige: Oh my god. That’s horrible.

Ben (taking several donuts off the platter): Sure, thanks.

Ben (swallowing the donut whole): Got milk?
Abigail: Help yourself.
Ben: Glug glug glug glug.
Abigail: I cannot believe you just chugged that right out of the jug. That’s disgusting. Where’d you grow up anyway? The boondocks?
Ben: Sorry.

Ben: I just found out that Jordan is my mother. Not my sister.

JJ’s Bedroom
Paige: JJ, that makes no sense whatsoever.
JJ: I’m ashamed. I’m ashamed of him and I’m afraid I’ll turn out to be just like him.
Paige: That’s not gonna happen.
JJ: How do you know? You can’t know that.
Paige: Sure I can. I know because of my own father.
JJ: Your father? What do you mean?
Paige: Remember I told you my father left? He walked out on my mom. And on me. And he never got in touch. Not once.
JJ: Ooookay. What does that have to do with….
Paige: I’m ashamed of my dad too, JJ. What kind of person turns their back on their daughter?
JJ: You’re right. That’s unthinkable.
Paige: But I can tell you that I’m never gonna be like him. I will never in a million years do to my family what he did to his.
JJ: Of course you won’t.
Paige: And you’re never gonna be like your dad.
JJ: Oh. … I see what you’re saying. But ….

JJ: Well, what about your mom? She haaaates me.

Ben: He’s still my father.
Abigail: So Jordan … and Clyde???
Ben: Yes.
Abigail bites her fist in horror: Gasp!
Ben: I know. Right?
Abigail: What are you going to do?
Ben: I need to go on the run again. I can’t stay here anymore.
Abigail: Why not?
Ben: Because my whole life is a lie. I can’t even stand to look at Jordan. Mom. Whoever.
Abigail: Oh Ben. But … you weren’t lying when you told me I’m beautiful, right? That wasn’t a lie.
Ben: Of course not. Abby…
Abigail: Abigail.
Ben: Abigail. Sorry. Would you come with me? Would you run away with me?
