In the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest, James Scott(EJ) and Alison Sweeney(Sami) discussed their thoughts about the EJ/Sami ending. These are just a few points from the article:
James: A part of him wished that EJ & Sami could go off into the sunset, but another part of him hoped that EJ would go out in a blaze of glory. He points out that EJ and Sami's love story was actually a tragedy and that usually means it won't end well.
Ali: She experienced a lot of mixed emotions when she was told how the story would end. A part of her hoped for a happy ending and she was disappointed when she was told that EJ would die because she knew that it would be heartbreaking for Ejami fans. However, she understood the challenges that the writers faced in regards to Sami and EJ's exits. She realized that Sami's daughter with Lucas(Allie) would become an issue if Sami and EJ were to leave with the children. She sympathized with the writers, but also felt sadness for the character of EJ.
Alison says that the scenes with Sami & EJ in the morgue and having the episode devoted to EJami helped her deal with the storyline twist and EJ's death. She says that it was cathartic for her because she needed to grieve as well. She remarked that James was a real trooper in the morgue scenes and kept jokingly asking her if she would run lines with him. Alison says that even though filming the end of EJ & Sami's love story was challenging, time-consuming and exhausting, she always kept the loyal fans in mind. The fans made her and James want to work harder to ensure the ending was the best that it could be.

Thanks for posting this @dukeblue. LOL at James asking Alison to run his lines from the morgue scene.

Thanks for posting. I guess now we know that he won't be coming back at least for now. I guess they are going to leave it open-ended as far as what was in the syringe. If they want to bring the character back someday, with this actor or another, they can tell us he was brought back by whatever Kristen gave him.

It looks like EJ is dead unless the writers decide to bring him back at some point down the road.

That would be my guess wendylou. It doesn't seem like James is heavily leaning towards returning to Days. His comment about wanting to play a new character if he ever returned to soap opera work was very telling...at least to me. I think TPTB wanted to have that escape hatch just in case they ever needed or wanted to use EJ in the future, hence the injection at the very end.

I loved James' honesty. I often wonder how the actors can play the same stories over and over without getting burnt out.
I think the EJ/Sami ending is quite fitting. They were indeed a tragedy rather than a grand love story. Soap operas aren't made for riding off into the sunset. Look at how long it took for Kim/Shane fans to get a happy ending! And even now there's always the chance the happy ending will be undone.

There have been many memorable "sunset" endings (Bo/Hope, Steve/Kayla). One of my favorites was Mike & Carrie riding off together on a white horse!
These types of endings are overrated IMO. In soap opera land, it never really seems to be the end anyway!
