I'm curious.... Many times we will post a comment that's basically, "...but that was so out of character! What were the writers thinking??" Given that many of the actors have been on the show for years, do you think they have much input into what their characters do or how they react? Is the pace of filming too fast for that? Do the writers solicit that kind of feedback?

Great question!
I doubt they have much input, any more than I can influence what goes on at my company. However, I do think they often know their character better than the writers, since there have been different writers over the years. That said, I would hope they might say, well that doesn't seem like something Lucas would do or Hope would do or Jennifer would do. I believe the producer has the final say, but that's just an impression and not necessarily based in fact.

I know in the past it was Stephen Nichols who came up with the term "Sweetness." Shane just started picking up Kimberly when they were going to make love, it was not in the script! I know that it was Patsy who came up with the term "Captn."

Based on the interviews I've read regarding the current set of writers, the actors do not have input. They play the characters and have no voice in how they act. I could be wrong, but I think it was Lauren Koslow who said that what is in character is whatever the writers have decided in that scene for the character. Suzanne Rogers has also said in some interviews that she has to play what she's given. I don't think the current writers care at all about what the actors think/feel.

James Scott was very vocal about EJ's affair with Abigail. I do not believe that he was very happy about the direction of his character, but he had to play what he was given.

I get the impression that things have changed a lot over the years. I doubt the actors are able to change anything other than a few words of dialogue.
