I think EJ's character will end up being killed off, although I hope he just fakes his death if there's a death at all because with EJ faking his death it leaves the door open for an eventual return and I think I have an idea of how I'd like to see it play out.
What if Stefano were trying to get revenge on Kate and Sami and put out a hit on Sami & Kate? EJ sees the gunman just in the nick of time and jumps in front of the bullet, taking it for Sami.
It increases the Brady/Dimera feud, because we all know that Stefano never takes responsibility for his actions. He would blame Sami for the death of his son.
It would give Sami a reason to leave town. Knowing that Stefano is gunning for her and not being able to live with the fact that EJ died for her.
And in some ways it rectifies EJ's character in the sense of him earning his redemption. In a last selfless act he lays down his life for Sami, proving that he really does love her more than his own life like he has always said.
If the kids HAVE to lose their father I think knowing that he sacrificed his life to save their mother would be a respectable way to do it.
Although I see him faking his death like perhaps EJ could get into a car that is rigged up to explode by Stefano but somehow EJ survives the explosion because the blast throws him back and of course the Salem PD are trying to find his body but of course they can't find his body so EJ would be presumed dead but the blast throws him back but he survives but he is grabbed by someone...the mysterious person he's grabbed by is none other than someone who is supposed to be dead, a villain from Salem's past but as for who I would have it turn out to be...Andre DiMera back from the dead...Andre rises again and kidnaps EJ
