Chapter 9 ALAMAIN MOTEL NICHOLAS: No, no I don't think that would be wise. As I said, she's not well. RAFE: In that case, I'll have to ask you, have you seen this woman? Rafe showed Nicholas a picture of Abby. NICHOLAS: A few nights ago, yes. RAFE: Well, she's wanted for theft, and I'm trying to track her down. How long did she stay here? NICHOLAS: Just one night. RAFE: Uh-huh. And how did she seem to you? Was she acting strangely? NICHOLAS: No. RAFE: I see. What did she do while she was here? NICHOLAS: Checked in, ate dinner, said she was very tired and had to get right to bed, got up the next morning, and left. RAFE: Did she say where she was going? NICHOLAS: Back home, I think. I can't quite remember, to tell you the truth. RAFE: Right. Now, I don't suppose you'd be keeping her here, would you? NICHOLAS: No, of course not. RAFE: Right. And I suppose that if she were to say she wanted you to valiantly protect her, you'd know something was up, right? NICHOLAS: Yes. RAFE: And you wouldn't be fooled, would you? Nicholas became slightly agitated. NICHOLAS: I'm not a fool! I've never been fooled and I never will be, especially not by a woman! RAFE: Take it easy, pal. I'm not trying to question your manhood. Nicholas softened. NICHOLAS: Well, she may have fooled me, but she didn't fool Aunt Viv. RAFE: Your aunt met her? Well, now I'll have to speak with her. NICHOLAS: I don't think so. RAFE: Do you want me to get a warrant and search the house? NICHOLAS: If you feel you have to. RAFE: Right. NICHOLAS: Now, go away, please. I think I've talked to you as much as I'd like to for today. RAFE: Well, I'll be back. Rafe turned and walked back towards his car.

Chapter 10 GAS STATION Rafe had parked his car in a gas station parking lot and was on the phone again with Stephanie. STEPHANIE (over phone): So, you didn't actually find anything? RAFE: That's not true! I found where she was staying, as well as the people she was staying with. STEPHANIE (over phone): People? You only mentioned one person, this Alamain guy. RAFE: Well, he says his Aunt Vivian is there, too, but he wouldn't let me see her. STEPHANIE (over phone): Why not? RAFE: He said she's not well, but I don't think I believe that. STEPHANIE (over phone): So, what do you think? RAFE: Well, based on what little we know, and how Nicholas Alamain was acting, I think your cousin is in very big trouble. I think they have her hidden up in that house somewhere. STEPHANIE (over phone: So, what do we do? RAFE: I intend to go back over there and speak with Vivian Alamain. See if I can get her side of the story, and maybe find your cousin. There's just something about this that doesn't add up. STEPHANIE (over phone): Weird. RAFE: Yep. Well, I think I'm gonna go over there and see what I can find. Shouldn't take too long. Expect my call within an hour or hour and a half. STEPHANIE (over phone): Okay. Thanks a bunch for this, Detective Hernandez. RAFE: No trouble. Rafe hung up the phone and started up his car. ALAMAIN MOTEL Rafe drove up, got out of the car, and knocked on the door of the house next to the motel. There was no answer. Rafe jiggled the handle and noticed that the door was unlocked. He went inside. RAFE: Mr. Alamain? Rafe walked around looking for Nicholas. RAFE: Mr. Alamain? It's Detective Hernandez. I have a warrant, so I'll be starting my search. Rafe walked up the stairs. RAFE: Hello? Anybody home? Suddenly, a door flung open and a woman ran in, brandishing a butcher's knife. She stabbed Rafe in the head. Rafe tumbled backwards down the stairs, his back breaking as he fell. When he got to the bottom the woman ran down and stabbed him several times over in the chest to make sure that he was dead. Then, she ran back into her room.

Chapter 11 MOTEL - CHICAGO In the parking lot of a motel, E.J. stood by his car. Stephanie walked up. E.J.: Why here of all places? STEPHANIE: Because we need a quiet place to talk. E.J.: About what? STEPHANIE: Detective Hernandez. Have you heard anything from him? E.J.: No. Not since last night. STEPHANIE: Neither have I. He said he would call back in an hour. It's been a whole night, and he still hasn't called back. E.J.: So, what are you thinking? STEPHANIE: I think something happened to him. E.J.: Logical assumption. STEPHANIE: We need to go. He told us what motel Abby had been staying at, so we should be able to find it. Besides, Salem's only a few hours drive from here. E.J.: All right. Get in the car. E.J. and Stephanie got in the car. STEPHANIE: I just hope Abby and the detective are all right. E.J. drove the car away once Stephanie had gotten in. ALAMAIN MOTEL Nicholas walked up the stairs. They had been cleaned since the previous night. He walked into the room that his aunt stayed in. However, we do not see the inside of the room. We hear their voices coming from the room. NICHOLAS (VO): Aunt Viv...I have to talk to...I have to bring something up to you... Vivian laughs. VIVIAN (VO): I am sorry, boy, but you do manage to look hilarious when you try to give me orders. NICHOLAS (VO): Aunt Vivian, please. Don't make this any harder for me than it is. VIVIAN (VO): No! I will not go in that fruit cellar! I know you think I'm fruity! You think I'm a fruitcake, boy? I'm going to stay right here, I tell you! This is my room, and nobody's gonna drag me out of it, least of all my big oaf of a nephew! NICHOLAS (VO): Aunt Viv, I'm only trying to protect you! Don't you see? That detective came after the girl. Surely, somebody is going to come after him! VIVIAN (VO): Don't call me Shirley! NICHOLAS (VO): Please, Aunt Viv, it'll only be a for a few days. I just have to make sure they don't find you! VIVIAN (VO): A few days?! No! I won't have it! You hid me in there once, boy, and you'll not do it again! Never again! Now get out! There is complete silence for a minute. VIVIAN (VO): I thought I told you to get out, boy! NICHOLAS (VO): I'll carry you if I have to, Aunt Viv. VIVIAN (VO): Nicholas? Nicholas! What on earth do you think you're doing! Don't you dare touch me! Nicholas! Put me down! Put me down! I can walk on my own!

Chapter 12 SALEM POLICE DEPARTMENT It took E.J. and Stephanie most of the day to drive to Salem. They had passed the motel and had seen the shadowy figure of a woman and a man talking in the window. Though they didn't know this at the time, this is the same point as when Nicholas was threatening to take Vivian down to the fruit cellar. The two drove on until they reached the police station. They figured that, because the last two people who went in their hadn't been heard from since, it might be a good idea to inform the police before going into the Alamain Motel. They pulled up to the station, got out, and were met by Bo. BO: Can I help you? E.J.: Yes. Hello. E.J. DiMera, this is Stephanie Johnson. STEPHANIE: Hi. BO: Police Commander Bo Brady. Bo and E.J. shook hands, then he shook hands with Stephanie. BO: What can I do for you? E.J.: Well, we're here because we're looking for someone. Two someones, as it were. STEPHANIE: My cousin and a private detective. BO: And you think they're out here? STEPHANIE: This is about where they were the last time we talked to them. E.J.: They both disappeared while staying up at a nearby motel. BO: The Alamain Motel? E.J.: That's the one. BO: Oh, that's where Nicholas Alamain lives. I'll give him a call and ask if he's seen them. Bo got out his cell phone. BO: Nicholas? It's Commander Brady from the Salem P.D. Pause. BO: Fine thanks. Look, I'm just calling to make sure that everything's okay up there. Pause. BO: Good, that's good. You haven't seen a young woman or a detective in recent history have you? Pause. BO: Hello? Hello? Bo hung up the phone. BO: He hung up on me. Well, that's suspicious. STEPHANIE: The thing is, we called a detective to find my cousin because she's in a bit of trouble. BO: What kind of trouble? STEPHANIE: Theft. E.J.: And the last we heard from the detective, he had reached the motel, spoken with Nicholas, and was going to go back and try to speak to his aunt. BO: Excuse me? Did you say he was gonna try to talk to Nicholas Alamain's aunt? E.J.: Yes, he did. Vivian is her name I believe. BO: I'm sorry, but that's not possible. STEPHANIE: Why not? BO: Vivian Alamain has been dead for nearly five years now. E.J.: What? STEPHANIE: That's impossible! Detective Hernandez was sure that he saw Vivian Alamain! He said that Nicholas even mentioned that she was home that night! BO: So, you're gonna have me believe that crazy old Vivian Alamain is still alive? E.J.: We know she's still alive. We drove past the motel this evening on our way out here. She was standing in the window. BO: You sure it was her? E.J.: Very sure. She looked exactly like Detective Hernandez had described. Bo turned. BO: So, she is still alive. But, if Vivian Alamain is still alive, who's buried in St. Luke's cemetery?

Chapter 13 SALEM P.D. BO: So, it's all set then. We'll give you fifteen minutes, and then we'll follow. E.J.: Excellent. Thank you. E.J. and Bo shook hands, as did Stephanie and Bo. E.J.: Well, Stephanie, let's go see what we can find. E.J. and Stephanie walked out and got in their car. ALAMAIN MOTEL The car pulled up the Alamain Motel. The two got out and knocked on the door. Nicholas opened it. E.J. (with bad American accent): Hi. STEPHANIE: Hi. NICHOLAS: Hello. Can I help you? E.J. (with American accent): Well, you see, my wife and I are passing through and we wanted to make a stop for the night. Do you have any vacancies? NICHOLAS: Sure we do. We have 12. 12 rooms, 12 vacancies. STEPHANIE: Great! We'll take one. Nicholas handed them a piece of paper to fill out. Once they had, they handed it back to him. Nicholas then handed them a key. NICHOLAS: First door on the right. Has a number 1 one the front. E.J. (with American accent): Thanks. NICHOLAS: I don't believe I caught your name. I'm Nicholas Alamain. STEPHANIE: Stephanie and E.J. Johnson. The two shook hands with Nicholas. NICHOLAS: How long are you planning on staying? E.J. (with American accent): Oh, just the night. NICHOLAS: Well, if you need anything, I'll be in the parlor. It's right next to your room. STEPHANIE: Great. Thanks. E.J. and Stephanie left the room and entered their hotel room. E.J.: I wonder which one Abigail was staying in. Stephanie had put her things on the dresser. She stopped when she saw a small scrap of paper, and picked it up. STEPHANIE: I think she stayed in this one. E.J.: Why's that, then? STEPHANIE: Look at this. Stephanie showed him the scrap of paper. On it was written "$400,000". E.J.: That's Abigail's handwriting. STEPHANIE: And if that's here, then what else is? Abby's probably here right now in this hotel somewhere. E.J., we need to find her! E.J.: And we will. But, it's not as if Nicholas is just going to give us a tour of the hotel. We need to be careful about how we do this. STEPHANIE: Any ideas? E.J.: Yes, in fact. You go look for your cousin in the house. If Nicholas has stashed her somewhere, it'll be in the house. Try to find his Aunt Vivian and get her to tell you where Abby's hidden. STEPHANIE: What are you gonna do? E.J.: I'll distract Nicholas.
