Camila Banus Exit Interview Parting Words from the Days of Our Lives Actress
By Janet Di Lauro
Mark Camila Banus (Gabi) as the latest twenty something -- hello Molly Burnett (ex-Melanie), Casey Jon Deidrick (ex-Chad) and Chandler Massey (ex-Will) -- to defect from Days of Our Lives, when her contract with the show expired. The actress, who finished taping in January, but will air into June, has decided to try her luck outside the daytime arena. (Prior to joining Days, she played Lola on One Life to Live.) But before Banus wrapped things up, she shared some thoughts on exiting Salem.
Why did you decide to leave Days?
I've been on the show for three years. I was at the point where my contract was ending. I either needed to renew and stay or leave. I felt like it was necessary for me to go, to remove myself from Days... at least for a while. I don't know what will be up with my life as far as a couple of years from now.
Moving forward, what are your plans?
I want to do ultimately what I moved from Miami, Florida to Los Angeles to do. I want to see what else is out there and try different things.
What will you miss most about the show?
The other day I was shooting and just having these little moments... like [sharing] a joke with the stage manager or getting to say hi to everybody in the morning. I feel like that's what I'm going to miss, because I've made a lot of great friendships; not only with the cast but with the crew. When you see these people day in and day out and then, all of a sudden, you don't see them again... It's going to be sad.
One of the best turns for your character was her relationship with Nick. What are your thoughts on that?
I love Gabi and Nick. A lot of Gabi's happiness has come from the time she's been with Nick. I appreciate that as somebody who's playing Gabi, because we're in a soap opera where there isn't a lot of happiness happening. The little bit we do have is fun, when we're playing it. It's nice when we play those moments, like Nick with the heart shaped pillow [on the Valentine's Day episode] or going out and getting yogurt or whatever little thing we might be doing. It's those moments that are really fun. If the show was always hard core drama it would be so negative and depressing all the time ... a real Debbie Downer.
What will you miss most about playing Gabi?
Rafe and Gabi's relationship. Somebody said the other day on Twitter that it was the best brother/sister relationship on any television show, which is awesome, and I agree. I think they're amazing. [The writers] didn't play them enough, but when they did, people always responded really positively toward them.
Obviously, you've enjoyed working with your TV brother, Galen Gering?
I really have. Galen is amazing. Just a great guy. And we have had so much fun working together. That's one of the biggest things I'm going to miss about the show -- working with him.

She just had to and mention the heart pillow!!!!! Will that ever die??!?! So glad I wasn't eating but I was about to out and get some lunch. Overall, it was a good interview. I don't blame her for wanting to see what's available to her. Her character has been just so so most of her Days career. Best of luck to her!

She did her best work the final month she was on the air. Good interview.
