Shine On You Crazy Diamond is different than most of my stories, as it is an adaptation. Now, I have done adaptations before, but not this kind of adaptation. You will notice that many things in this story are different than the way they are on the actual show. This is because I count this story to be in a separate universe from the show. I have put a cast of characters below so you can see who is who and what their histories in this story are. I hope you enjoy this twisted different take on Days and The Shining. The cast shall be updated as characters appear. The Cast James Scott as E.J. DiMera - The son of a wealthy crime boss, E.J. has become estranged from his family. He is a recovering alcoholic and former school teacher, looking to make a new start in Salem with his wife and son. He soon gets a job working at the Salem Inn as the hotel's winter caretaker. Alison Sweeney as Sami DiMera - E.J.'s wife. She is a devoted wife and parent, but a bit uneasy around her husband, due to his sometimes harsh temper. She is hoping that the move to Salem will be a new start for the whole family. Aaron and Griffin Kunitz as Johnny DiMera - E.J. and Sami's seven-year-old son. Johnny has an imaginary friend named Zane. Johnny also has a special power that his parents don't know about. James Reynolds as Abe Carver - The head chef at the Salem Inn, as well as another hotel down in Daytona, Florida. Abe has the same powers as Johnny and teaches him about these powers. Wayne Northrop as Roman Brady - The owner of the Salem Inn. He is somewhat reluctant to hire E.J., given his track record. Jen Lilley as Jeannie - Roman's secretary and one of the Salem Inn's receptionists. Peter Reckell as Bo Brady - Roman's younger brother. He is much more enthusiastic about hiring E.J., and gives him and his family a tour of the hotel. Carolyn and Campbell Rose as The Twins - A set of mysterious identical twins who appear to Johnny a number of times during his stay at the Salem Inn. Though they, like most little girls, look innocent, there is something very sinister going on with them. Mary Beth Evans as Dr. Kayla Johnson - A local pediatrician who checks out Johnny after he has a fainting spell. Although she doesn't think anything of the spell, she is slightly concerned when she learns of E.J.'s temper and alcohol problems. Eric Martsolf as Brady Black - A park ranger who occasionally communicates with the inhabitants of the Salem Inn via CB radio. Darin Brooks as Max - A bartender at the Salem Inn. Is on very good terms with E.J. Though he is very pleasant at all times, there is something about the hotel that he is hiding. Jay Kenneth Johnson as Philip Kiriakis - The former caretaker of the Salem Inn who murdered his whole family and then committed suicide. He appears to E.J. and gives him orders to do the same to his family. Galen Gering as Rafe - A car dealer from whom Abe borrows a SnowCat.

E.J. drove the little car down the road. It was a five hour drive from the small apartment he and his family lived in to the Salem Inn, a glamorous hotel on the outermost rims of the small town of Salem. As he drove, he reflected on what had led him to this point. E.J. and his wife and son hadn't been in the state of Illinois for very long, only a few months. However, they hoped it would be a new start. E.J. was a recovering alcoholic and, so far, had been following the program to the letter for several months now. Though E.J. was now looking for a new line of work, he used to be a school teacher. He and his family had had to leave their old home in Maine after an incident at the school he had worked at. A student, angry at E.J. for kicking him off the debate team, had slashed the tires of E.J.'s car. This was right around the time that E.J. had begun his sobriety, and this pushed him over the edge. He didn't even realize that he had done anything until a fellow teacher pulled him off of the student. The student was hospitalized for two weeks and E.J. was asked to leave. Or rather forced, he thought to himself. But, that was all over now. It was time for a fresh start. E.J. had even taken up a lifelong interest again: writing. He was currently writing a novel. Thankfully, this novel was helping him keep his mind off of drinking. He hadn't had a drop in months. Yes, he thought, it's all going to be fine. A fresh start, just what we need. He turned the corner and pulled into the parking lot of the majestic Salem Inn where, if this interview went well, he and his wife and son would live for the next six to eight months. Part 1 - The Interview
Chapter 1 SALEM INN E.J. walked in to the bustling lobby of the Salem Inn. It was a very large, very beautiful hotel. He was stunned by its magnificence. He had seen pictures, but they didn't half do the real thing justice. After looking around, for a moment, he went up to the guest services desk. SECRETARY: Good afternoon. How may I help you? E.J.: Afternoon. I'm here to see Mr. Brady. I have an appointment. My name is E.J. DiMera. SECRETARY: His office is on the top floor. If you take the elevator all the way up, it'll be the first door on your left when you walk out. E.J.: Thank you. So, E.J. made his way up to the office of Mr. Roman Brady. The office was small and cluttered with papers. Before coming in, E.J. knocked on the door. ROMAN: Come in. E.J. entered the office. Roman was looking at some paperwork. E.J.: Mr. Brady, I'm E.J. DiMera. He held out his hand for Roman to shake. Roman was too busy looking at his paperwork. ROMAN: Have a seat. E.J. sat down in the chair across from Roman's. ROMAN: I see you found the place. E.J.: Indeed. No trouble at all. Just a five hour drive from Chicago. ROMAN: Impressive timing. Roman put his papers down. He pressed a button on the phone that sat on his desk. ROMAN: Jeannie, find my brother and tell him our guest has arrived. And bring me a coffee, please. For the first time, he looked at E.J. ROMAN: Do you like coffee? E.J.: Certainly. Roman pressed the button again. ROMAN: Make that two coffees. Three if Beauregard wants one. Roman then went back to his paperwork. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" will continue weekdays.

Chapter 2 APARTMENT Quite a way away, E.J.'s wife and son, Sami and Johnny, were sitting down to lunch. There was a small television on which Johnny was watching cartoons. The family lived in a small apartment. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't fancy, either. Sami set two sandwiches down. One for her, one for her son. JOHNNY: Mom? SAMI: Yeah? JOHNNY: Do you really wanna go live in that big hotel all winter? Johnny took a bite of his sandwich. SAMI: Sure, I do. Don't you? Sami took a bite of hers. JOHNNY: I guess. Anyway, there's hardly anyone to play with. SAMI: I know, sweetie. It's hard to make friends in a new place. JOHNNY: I guess. SAMI: What about Zane? I'm sure he's excited to go. Johnny put out his pinky finger and wiggled it. He does this every time when Zane, his imaginary friend talks. He also speaks in a raspy voice when speaking as Zane. JOHNNY (as Zane): No, I don't, Mrs. DiMera. Sami smiled. SAMI: Come on, Zane. Don't be silly. JOHNNY (as Zane): I don't want to go there, Mrs. DiMera. SAMI: Why not? JOHNNY (as Zane): I just don't. SAMI: Well, we'll see about that. I'm sure you'll change your mind by the time we get there. We're gonna have a real good time. ROMAN'S OFFICE Back at the hotel, Roman was telling E.J. about the hotel. The door opened and a man walked in. He looked to be in his mid-forties, pushing 50. He had dark brown hair that was just beginning to grey. His nicely trimmed beard was already grey. ROMAN: Beauregard, you decided to show up. BO: Yep, I made it. ROMAN: Sit down. This is E.J. DiMera. This is my brother, Beauregard Brady. Bo and E.J. shook hands. E.J.: Pleasure. BO: Good to meet you. Call me Bo. Bo sat down in the chair next to E.J. ROMAN: Mr. DiMera will be the caretaker of the Salem Inn for the winter. BO: Excellent. ROMAN: Once we're done here, please take him around and show him the hotel. BO: You got it, bro. ROMAN: Mr. DiMera is a school teacher. E.J.: Former school teacher.

Chapter 3 ROMAN'S OFFICE E.J.: Former school teacher. ROMAN: Yes, quite. BO: What are you doing now? E.J.: I'm a writer, actually. Teaching was just a part-time job, enough to make ends meet, until my book could be properly finished. Sadly, my time at the school was cut short. BO: Well, this should be quite a change for you. E.J.: Yes, sir. A nice change. I've been looking for a change. ROMAN: Our people in Chicago highly recommended E.J. I'm still not sure. What do you think? BO: I agree with them. I think he'll be great. Roman looked at E.J. and muttered something under his breath. ROMAN: Anyway, as I was saying, our season runs from May 1st to October 30th. After that, we close down for the winter. E.J.: May I ask why that is, Mr. Brady? It would seem that the hills here would make for prime skiing. ROMAN: They would, if we didn't get so much snow every year. Though we're called the Salem Inn, we actually live several miles outside of Salem. We get approximately 20 feet of snow every year. The cost to get that path cleared, plus to keep this place running in good condition just isn't worth it. When we first opened in 1907, there was no concern for winter sports or activities. The site was chosen for its scenic beauty and seclusion. E.J.: Well, it is definitely beautiful. BO: It sure is. ROMAN: They tell you in Chicago what you'd be doing while you're here? E.J.: In very basic terms, yes. ROMAN: Well, to be more specific, you need to maintain the condition of the hotel. Run the boiler and heat various parts of the hotel on a daily rotating basis. Also, cope with any of the damage where it occurs and fix it. E.J.: Sounds great to me. ROMAN: Not a very demanding job at all. The only thing that can be a bit taxing for people is a tremendous feeling of isolation. E.J.: Just what I'm looking for, actually. I'll need some peace and quiet to write my book. ROMAN: Well, for some people, the isolation can become a problem. People tend to go a bit funny when they're cut off from human contact for quite a while. E.J.: Not me. ROMAN: What about your wife and son? How do you think they'll take it? E.J.: I'm sure they'll love it. Roman sighed. ROMAN: Well, before I hand you over to my brother for the tour, I feel I should mention one more thing. I'm sure that you heard about the unfortunate incident that happened here a few years back? E.J.: Incident? ROMAN: Yes. A very tragic incident. About ten years ago, we hired a caretaker for the winter. A man by the name of Philip Kiriakis. He and his wife and two daughters came up here and, at first, everything seemed fine. But, it wasn't. This man was mentally unstable. He succumbed to cabin fever a few months in. One night, he snapped. He chased his wife and girls with an ax. He...he killed them, chopped them up into pieces Then, he shot himself in the head. E.J. took a deep breath. E.J.: Well, that's quite a story. BO: It is. ROMAN: But, it happened. You understand why I'm telling you this, don't you? E.J.: Of course I do. ROMAN: It can be a bit off-putting to certain people. E.J.: Well, I'm sure my wife and son will love it here. And believe me, Mr. Brady, what happened with Mr. Kiriakis, well, that's just not going to happen with me.

Chapter 4 SALEM INN E.J. had already left. Roman and Bo were walking around the premises, discussing the interview. BO: I don't know what you're talking about, bro. I think he'll be a great caretaker. ROMAN: I just wish that my vote hadn't been vetoed. BO: You understand why that is, though. ROMAN: Of course I do. But, the board has decided to hire an alcoholic, who has only been dry for five months. Forgive me if I don't jump for joy at the thought of what might happen. BO: Look, nothing's gonna happen. He'll do just fine. ROMAN: I only hope you're right. APARTMENT Johnny was brushing his teeth. After rinsing, he looked into the mirror. JOHNNY: Zane, do you think daddy will get that job at the hotel? Johnny brought up his pinky finger and wiggled it. JOHNNY (as Zane): He already has. He's gonna call Sami and tell her about it right now. Just then, the phone rang. Sami, who was in the kitchen, picked it up. SAMI: Hello? E.J. (over phone): Hello, darling. SAMI: Hi, honey. How did it go? GAS STATION E.J. is talking on a pay phone. E.J.: Great. I got the job. SAMI (over phone): Honey, that great! E.J.: Samantha, you and Johnny will love it there. It is the most beautiful place in the world. SAMI (over phone): I'm sure we will! E.J.: Well, I'm gassing up the car right now. I'll be home in about four and a half hours. SAMI (over phone): Okay. I'll see you then. Love you. E.J.: Love you. E.J. hung up the phone. APARTMENT JOHNNY: Zane, why don't you want to go to that big hotel? Another pinky wiggled. JOHNNY (as Zane): I don't know. Johnny rinsed again. JOHNNY: You do too know. Tell me. Johnny wiggled his pinky JOHNNY (as Zane): No. Johnny washed his hands. JOHNNY: Please? Then, Johnny's eyes opened wide. He saw a strange sequence of images. It started with a hotel room door with the number 237 on it. The scene quickly changed to that of a set of twin girls. They were blonde and wearing identical blue dresses. These girls were soon replaced by a bathroom door with a message scrawled on it in red writing. The message was "REDRUM". Finally, there was a set of elevator doors. There was a red liquid flowing from them. It kept flowing. Soon, there was so much that it carried the furniture away. Johnny opened his mouth to scream, but no sound came out. Then, he fainted.
