Chapter 40 SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL Tony flipped through some papers. There was a knock at the door. TONY: It opens. Theresa walked in. THERESA: Hi. Tony looked up. TONY: Jeannie Donovan, just the girl i was hoping to see. THERESA: Please, call me Theresa. TONY: Okay. Sit. Theresa pulled a chair up in front of Tony's desk. THERESA: Um, who are you exactly? TONY: I could be any number of things. As it happens, I am Count Antony DiMera, head of HR. THERESA: Excuse me, did you just say "head of HR"? TONY: I did. THERESA: What about Anne? TONY: Miss Milbauer has been asked to leave. THERESA: I'm sorry to hear that. TONY: Indeed. But, let's talk about you. THERESA: Oh, why? I'm not that interesting. TONY: I doubt that. Tony pulled out a thick file. TONY: You've been arrested for possession of illegal drugs and theft. You were sent here on a plea bargain. You promised the good people of Salem that you would work hard, however since coming here, you have put in exactly 21 hours of work. Yet, somehow, miraculously, you still managed to keep your job this long. Theresa rolled her eyes. THERESA: Get to the point. I have better things to do than listen to some guy I don't even know blabber all day about me. TONY (sarcastically): Well, I am sorry for keeping you, wouldn't want to interrupt your oh-so-busy schedule, so let me cut right to the chase. Tony stood up. TONY: You're fired.

Chapter 41 SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL TONY: You're fired. Theresa stood up THERESA: What? TONY: You're fired. THERESA: No. No, I can't be fired! You can't fire me. TONY: Oh, but I can. I believe I just did. THERESA: No, please, Mr. DiMera, or Count DiMera, whatever. You need to keep me here! If I get fired and my parents find out, they will be so mad at me! They'll send me back to New York, TONY: I'm sorry, but you're fired. Tony sat down. THERESA: You're just like everyone else! You judge me before you even know me! TONY: The only thing I judge people on is their work performance. And your track record, according to the records kept by the previous head of HR, is not good. THERESA: Why is everyone so intent on ruining my life? First Jennifer and the sainted Hortons, and now you! Did Jennifer put you up to this? TONY: Please, stop with the yelling. I am sitting right in front of you, there is no need to yell. THERESA: Oh, blow it out your.. Tony stood up and put his hands on the desk. TONY: Excuse me? Theresa gulped and backed away one step. TONY: Excuse me? What were you saying? THERESA: Nothing, sir. TONY: I thought not. Now, please, sit. Theresa did as she was told. Tony sat down. TONY: When I first read your name, I was hoping that it was a mistake. But, alas, I was wrong. Now, I am not doing this for Jennifer. I am doing this for the hospital. I am very sorry that it had to be you, but I have to keep this hospital running. Were you more dedicated to your job, we might not need to have this conversation. Do not think that I am picking on you. You are not the only one losing their job. Others have before you and many others will after you. This is not a personal vendetta against you. This is about business. This is about the real world. In the real world, you don't get everything just because you have a rich daddy. I'm sorry, but that's all there is to it. I learned that the hard way a long time ago. You have to work for what you want. And I don't see you doing that here. I am not doing this to hurt you, Theresa. I'm doing this to help you. Someday, I hope you'll understand that. Theresa got up to leave. TONY: Theresa. She turned back to look at Tony. TONY: You think that nobody wants you here and that they're all judging you. Now, I've only started working here this week, I don't know everything that's gone on since you've been here. But, I do know one thing: there are people who want you here. And judgement is a two-way street. Perhaps if you didn't judge others so much, they wouldn't judge you.

Chapter 42 PENTHOUSE MARLENA: You won't get away with it, Satan. NICDEVIL: Oh, won't I? MARLENA: No. And here's why: we're not afraid of you. NICDEVIL: And why is that? MARLENA: Because, the only thing humans really fear is that which is unknown to them. But, I do not fear you. Because you've been inside my head. And I, inside yours. i know you, Satan. And I know somebody else, too. NICDEVIL: Stop. MARLENA: His name is Jesus. NICDEVIL: Don't. MARLENA: And he will protect us. NICDEVIL: Stop this! MARLENA: And even now, his people are working through him. You've lost, Satan. You lost a long time ago. NicDevil's hand was shaking. She balled it into a fist. NICDEVIL: I must be going. But, mark my words, Marlena: I will be back. NicDevil turned and walked away. MARLENA: Don't count on it. ST. LUKE'S John and Eric knelt in front of the altar, their hands folded. JOHN: We adore You, O Holy Spirit. Give us strength, give us light, console us. ERIC: We give ourselves entirely to You. O Spirit of light and grace, we want to only do the will of the Father. JOHN: Enlighten us that we may live always in the Father's will. Eternal Spirit fill us with Your Divine Wisdom that we may comprehend more fully insight into Your Divine Mysteries. ERIC: Give us lights, O Holy Spirit that we may know God. Work within the heart, the spiritual womb of the Virgin Mary, to form us more and more into the image of Jesus. JOHN & ERIC: Amen. The two stood up and looked at each other. JOHN: You ready for this? ERIC: I think so. JOHN: No, not think. You have to be ready. ERIC: Okay. I'm ready. JOHN: All right. Make the sign of the cross in the air. Eric did so. JOHN: Now, repeat after me. Lord have mercy. ERIC: Lord have mercy. JOHN: Christ have mercy. ERIC: Christ have mercy. JOHN: Lord have mercy. ERIC: Lord have mercy.

Chapter 43 ST. LUKE'S John and Eric were still going over the Rite of Exorcism. John had allowed Eric to read for himself by this point. ERIC: Almighty God, we beg you to keep the evil spirit from further molesting this servant of yours, and to keep him far away, never to return. At your command, O Lord, may the goodness and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, our Redeemer, take possession of this woman. May we no longer fear any evil since the Lord is with us; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen. JOHN: Amen. Eric closed the Bible that he was holding. The two men looked up at each other. JOHN: You did good, kid. When the time comes for the real exorcism, you'll be even better. Just keep practicing. Remember: you've gotta really feel the Word flowing through you. Feel the power. This isn't kids stuff anymore, this is the real deal. ERIC: I'll remember. Thanks for teaching me, John. JOHN: No problem. By the way, during the real exorcism, you'll feel a slight tug. That's the Devil trying to stop you. John put a hand on Eric's shoulder. JOHN: Don't let him. ERIC: I won't. It won't be easy, seeing Nicole like that, tied to a bed. But, it'll be a thousand times easier than seeing Nicole as she is now, possessed by Satan himself. JOHN: That's a fact. John looked at his watch. JOHN: Since we're done here, I'm gonna head home. You coming? ERIC: No, not yet. I think I'll stop by the confessional, see if anyone shows up. JOHN: All right. We'll see you later. ERIC: Bye. John left and Eric went to the confessional. He made the sign of the cross over his heart. ERIC: Grant to me, O Lord, that wisdom which stands beside Thy throne, that I may know how to judge Thy people with justice, and Thy poor ones with equity. Let me so use the keys of the Kingdom of heaven that I may open to no one upon whom they should shut, nor close them to any for whom they should open. May my intention be pure, my zeal sincere, my charity patient, my labor fruitful. Let me be gentle without weakness, severe without harshness. Let me not disdain the poor; nor fawn upon the rich. Make me kind that I may attract sinners, prudent in questioning them, adroit in directing them. Grant, I beseech Thee, skill to lead them back from sin, zeal in confirming them in good, diligence in elevating them to better things. Grant me good judgment in answering questions, correctness in counseling. Give me light when things are obscure, wisdom when they are entangled, victory when they are difficult. May I myself be not lost. Amen. A few moments later, he heard the opposite door of the confessional open. He then heard a voice. It was that of Theresa. THERESA: Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It's been...um...I don't really recall my last confession, if there ever was one. There was a long silence. ERIC: What can I help you with, dear one? Theresa sighed. THERESA: I...um...I don't really know how to do this. ERIC: Just speak your mind. Say whatever you are feeling.
