My friend and I were talking about love scenes in light of the fact that I'm soon to post one. My stance is I don't really like them (though I know many readers do) and I prefer to know how that connection FEELS rather than focusing on all the mechanics of the encounter. My friend countered with she likes to read the action of the feeling.
So curious, where does everyone stand on reading/writing love scenes?

As I posted in the chat, Love scenes in fiction are enjoyable to read but not necessary if the plot is interesting enough.
As for the love scene, I feel it needs the action but follow with the reaction or feeling.

I like love scenes. I have a dirty mind and it is nice to have things to read and visualize. Lol. But they aren't always needed. Some love stories completely stand alone without them.

I love to read love scenes. I like a balance between emotion and action. With some couples, I don't necessarily need to read about the feelings because I know they have been longing for each other and I can imagine how they are feeling without needing to read it. In that case, I want the mechanics.
As for writing them, they don't come easy to me, but I think they are an important part of the storytelling and, if it's a couple the reader is rooting for, it's a payoff for the reader. Like a reward.

I really enjoy love scenes as part of the overall love story. I definitely enjoy both the emotion and the action. Love scenes are part of soaps so it makes sense for fan fics to have love scenes too.

I like love scenes if they are tastefully written right. That is part of the connection to a love story and people love to read about it!!!

LOL I guess I am Amish. (Or read too many Victorian novels) I think a love story with some serious hand holding and a good kiss at the end can be far more romantic than stories with physical details of intimate acts. I just need to believe in the attraction/love, and for that to happen, I need to FEEL it throughout the story.

I just need to believe in the attraction/love, and for that to happen, I need to FEEL it throughout the story. It can be that way but I still feel it depends on the storyline and perhaps even the timeline. If set in modern times, the sex can be part of it but it doesn't have to be in detail. It can be implied instead. I would think a story set during the early 20th century shouldn't be so sex oriented. Women back in the day tended to be more virginal when they married. The sexual era was later on perhaps starting in the 1960's.. I'd have to check up the history on it but I am lazy today.

I def think that a book can have a good love scene but you don't have to go into explicit details like they do in cosmo!!!!! lol!!!! And I guess maybe it depends on the chemistry between the characters?
