The Pro/Am competition is the lifeblood of Ballroom dancing. My husband makes pretty good money competing with his ladies. Of course their routines are VERY different from the ones you see on the show. If you search youtube for "Bronze level (insert dance here)" and you'll see what I mean.

Exactly!!! That's why it's kind of frustrating for me to watch. The stars are forced to do choreography that is, usually, beyond their capabilites, and then the judges hammer them for their "lack of technique." All dancers (pro AND am) are always working on their technique. To think that a "star" can get it in a week is ridiculous. Plus, to compare men against women is totally unfair! Even the real competitions don't do that. They realize that the male competitor (and this is no exaggeration) has easily 10 times more to do than a female competitor. Len seems to have forgotten that, and Carrie Ann and Bruno never knew it in the first place. I have ZERO respect for Carrie Ann and Bruno as judges because THEY'VE NEVER BEEN BALLROOM DANCERS!!!! ARGH!!!!! Ok. Sorry. Rant over.
Ballroom dancing is immensly enjoyable and very rewarding. For teachers and students. I encourage everyone to do it. Just don't start on DWTS. Then you'll never learn anything. :-P

I wish there was somewhere relatively close that I could take lessons. It is probably a good 3 hours for me to get to a studio from where I live.

A lot of community colleges have group classes at a pretty reasonable price. However if you live in the boondocks, you may be out of luck.

I live in the boondocks. Our claim to fame where we live is the AuSable River Canoe Marathon. If you are ever bored check it out online. One weekend a year our population quadruples for about 2 days and as the marathon leaves so do the people. We are near a community college but they don't have any kind of dance there.
