Well, I just wrote a huge long answer and then it got lost. Damn. Kpatch I liked the episode. I'm not sure about Rachel or the waitress. They played that song "is that all there is?" At the beginning and end of the episode. Maybe Don and many of the others were wondering that. Was Rachel the woman he still thinks of as the woman he could have found real happiness with? To me Don has never really been happy. He's always striving for more but when is it enough? Maybe she died and visited him in a dream?? I really don't get the waitress. Who did she remind him of and why was he drawn to her? That was never clear to me. I enjoyed Peggy's date. Wonder if it will become a relationship or will end up being a silly drunken memory. I'd like Peggy to find someone to lean on. No matter how strong we are or try to be we need someone to share our burdens with and Peggy broke my heart in a previous episode when she fell to the floor of her apartment and cried. Ken's storyline was kind of funny with him getting revenge but it is sad that he ended up choosing another corporate job instead of going after that longtime dream of becoming a writer. I'm linking an interview below with Matthew Weiner with some discussion about the episode. I love to analyze everything about the show so I enjoyed it. www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2015/04/06/mad_men_season_premiere_matthew_weiner_explains_the_meaning_of_season_7.html

Oooh, thanks Wendy. I wanted to find a recap/analysis to read!
I think the waitress was supposed to remind Don of Rachel. I barely remember Rachel, except for not liking her, but I haven't liked any of Don's women except for Betty.
I kept thinking about what you said regarding Ken being the Mad Men writer. Maybe that's how it will wind up.

Okay, I usually wait until after the episode to comment but I iust have to say - I am not liking this relationship with the waitress. What on earth does Don see in this melancholy, semi-attractive waitress? I don't get it.

wendylou, I have a bad feeling about her, like she's crazy and is going to end up being a dangerous stalker or something.

I'd rather have that then have the show say that this dull, unremarkable woman is the one who Don's been looking for all of his life. GMAB! Maybe now that she's explained her daughter's death, he is connecting to the emptiness in her. Was he originally from Wisconsin?

No, wasn't that house he took the kids to in New Jersey or Queens?
Ugh, Megan. I want to be done with her. She is like Jordan. Boring and sucks up too much air time.

Yeah. So far this epi is a dud for me. Way too much Megan and dull waitress. Hopefully this is Megan's kiss-off episode. It certainly looks like it.

I agree wendylou, and we had to suffer through meeting a morose sister of Megan's? Why are they introducing these new characters at this late stage? We have no time to get invested.

Well Kpatch, what was your opinion now that we've seen the whole episode? I have to say, I was really disappointed in this one. If this had not been one of the final episodes I might not have felt that way but this IS one of the final episodes and I JUST DON'T GET IT. Maybe it will make sense later.

I am with you 100% wendylou. I was seriously disappointed in the episode, and that has been a rare occurrence throughout Mad Men's entire run. The epi showcased three new characters (waitress, Megan's sister, and Pixie Ryan - or whatever her name was, played by Mimi Rogers) and it's way too late to get invested in new characters. Plus, way too much time was wasted on Megan and her mother, and I'm pissed that Don gave her a million unearned dollars. He has children with another woman. I sure hope he's going to take care of them equally well. The only reason I can see for introducing the ad woman is for Peggy to maybe explore a different side of her sexuality. Not really interested in seeing that, but the show uses Peggy to represent the female evolution/revolution of the era, so maybe that's where this is going. I wanted to see the guy she went out with last week. They had great chemistry.

Great assessment. Pretty much what you and I said. I'm glad we are not alone in our boredom and frustration with last week's episode.

After last week's disappointing outing, I have to admit I'm not as eager for this week's episode.

For me it seems like we're back to the Mad Men I love. Thank goodness no Diana - yet.
I love seeing Joan's struggle with being a single working mom trying to find love too. Not sure what I think about her new man. I know his wardrobe was probably stylin back then but it reminds me of Mr. Furley.
That little dork working on the Tinkerbell cookies was so funny. I think he struck a nerve with Don. Do you think he was right? Is Don just handsome? I definitely think he gets away with more because of his looks.
Poor Sally having to watch all her friends hit on her parents.
