I watched -- good episode. Lots of changes -- Mary rebounding from Matthew's death and taking a greater part in the running of the estate. I think her father would have preferred she stayed in mourning for the rest of her life. Edith is turning into an interesting character - in love with a man who can't divorce his wife in England. Well written characters -- my favorites are Mrs. Hughes and Isabel Crawley -- interesting older women from different social classes but very much alike.

I watched. So good! It felt weird seeing Edith in a love story, hearing her say the romantic lines. The expectations of women and men grieving were clearly shown. No one seemed to expect that amount of grieving from Tom (Branson) after Sybil died. And the nanny! Yikes!

I really liked the episode. Edith didn't start out as a character I liked but she is winning me over. I hope something finally goes right in her love life.
That nanny was a monster. At first I was rooting for her because I thought Thomas was just being his typical jerkish self and maybe he was but it turns out he was so right on that one.
I was glad to see Mary come out of her depression towards the end. Loved her scenes with Carson.

The Mary/Carson scenes were very good. She played the lady and told him he was out of his place giving her advice. He didn't backdown and she apologized after thinking over his words. You can see how nannies could screw up generations of children.
Did any one watch "Lovejoy Mysteries".on BBC? Phyllis Logan (Mrs Hughes) played Lady Jane -- another great character.

Did anyone watch Downton tonight? I don't want to spoil if you are in a different time zone but some scenes were tough to watch.

I did. I actually had kind of heard that was coming, although not so soon. Even so, I wasn't prepared for how bad it was. I understand what she's thinking about keeping it from her husband b/c he'd be so angry but I WANT JUSTICE! I know it doesn't always happen in real life, probably especially back then but I hope we get it.
Also - I really can't stand that conniving little Braithwaite! She knew exactly when to pounce.

It was tough, but I appreciated the 'viewer discretion warning' at the beginning. Oh, poor Anna. In other parts, yeah, Edna is definitely trouble. And I hate the way Tom's feelings are discounted by everyone. They have focused so much on Mary's grief that they overlook the fact that he lost Sybil. Plus they don't truly understand how uncomfortable he truly is with trying to fit in. And poor Moseley. He's just such an underdog in every way.

Poor Anna. The only person she might turn to is Mary -- if Mary forces the issue. Wasn't the man who attacked Anna servant to the man who is interested in Mary? Maybe that is the only way justice (or what passes for it) will be served.
The division between the downstairs people was evident when Carson asked if the kitchen staff as well as the maids and footmen would be attending the recital. I agree with Tom -- there are just too many rules to keep straight.

Yes, kathyj, that was his servant. Hard to believe since he seems so nice. I hope Mary will help her. After all, once someone helps you move a dead man out of your bed in the middle of the night, the least you can do is help punish their rapist.

Mrs. Hughes to the rescue once again. She got Tom out of a difficult situation. Glad Braitwaite is gone -- for good I hope. Mrs Hughes wanted Anna to go to the police about the attack but she refused. Love Mrs Hughes. The actress who plays Anna is wonderful -- you really feel her predicament -- but basically all she wants to do is protect Bates.

Oh I love Mrs. Hughes. I'm so glad she told that man she knew what he was. He was so smug. He's in for it now though. Mr. Bates looks like he's put it together.

I agree Bates has figured it out. I think Mrs. Hughes can solve any problem. I'm glad Edith didn't go through with the abortion. - it will be interesting to see the family's reaction to that news.

Nice episode: Liked that Edith finally decided to bring her baby daughter close to her. Mrs. Hughes and Carson -- the British Maggie and Victor. Loved their conversation. I can't tell if Isobel likes the man who is interested in her or if she is just being polite. Mr. Bates is turning into a really dark character and more interesting.
Maggie Smith -- wonderful.
I like the fact that British actors (men and women) allow themselves to age naturally. The British viewing public seem to accept that but I don't know if American audiences would. Days actors really work hard at looking younger -- it must be tiring to keep up that pace.

I couldn't watch until today. I loved the ending with Carson and Mrs. Hughes. That's a great comparison kathyj, Victor and Maggie. I like Mr. Bates but I am really starting to wonder about him too. I guess he is a forger and he seems to have definitely been behind that man's death (which I'm not so sure I can hold against him). When I saw that he was a forger it made me think back to the letter that got him out of jail a few years ago. I can't remember all of the details but it made me wonder if that could have been a fake. Do you have a preference in Lady Mary's Men? I think I like Gilliam the best. I'm going to miss Downton.
