Week 5 (With video!!!) – This is Americana week. Everyone is supposed to do a routine that is patriotic. Not sure what the middle of April has to with patriotism. Me thinks this would have been a better theme for the end of May (near Memorial Day), but whatever. Let the confusion begin.
(Btw, I was almost going to protest the cancellation of AMC and OLTL by not watching tonight, but I couldn’t do it. Damn you ABC!!!)
Ralph/Karina (Samba) – Oh dear. They are doing a samba to “Sweet Home Alabama?” It just seems wrong. Having watched them dance, now I just feel confused. That was one of the strangest things I think I’ve ever seen on this show.
This song is special to me because I went to the Univ. of Alabama and this song is an anthem for us alumni. In NO WAY is it a samba. But who do I blame for this atrocity? I feel awful for Ralph. This was just all kinds of wrong. Poor guy.
My Score: 6 Judges Score: 22 (8, 7, 7) Chris/Cheryl (Viennese Waltz) – Dancing to “America the Beautiful,” Chris looks very lovely in his faux military suit. And he did a nice job dancing. He did his part very well. His footwork was very good and his frame looked excellent. Too bad (again) that he wasn’t leading. Argh! But that’s Cheryl’s fault for not trusting her partner enough. I can’t fault him.
My Score: 8 Judges Score: 26 (9, 8, 9) PS. Len made a hilarious comment thanking Cheryl for showing her “Rocky Mountains.” That is one dirty old man.
Petra/Dimitri (Quickstep) – An Elvis quickstep? Um, ok? This made me cringe. First off, her frame is ALL wrong. If she actually HAD a frame, Dimitri would have been able to lead her. I think because the dance is so fast, it got away from her and she messed up quite a bit. Len is enamored of her beauty, so he was way too soft on her. Bruno is just insane. This was a mess and I did not enjoy it. On the other hand, she did look pretty, but since she is a model, isn’t that her job??
My Score: 6 Judges Score: 22 (7, 7, 8)Romeo/Chelsie (Foxtrot) – At least they actually have a foxtrot song with Sinatra’s “New York New York.” I found myself grinning like an idiot through the whole thing. That was VERY good!!! His posture, footwork, and even (sometimes) his lead were solid and well done. I was surprised, but he was very smooth and I loved it.
My Score: 9 Judges Score: 26 (9, 8, 9) A special nod to Carrie Ann for mentioning to Chelsie that she was doing a good job. I like it when the judges recognize the teachers.
Hines/Kym (Rumba) – Rumba is traditionally a dance that represents love/passion and they are dancing to “Proud to be an American” which isn’t (in my mind) a romantic dance at all. But whatever. He looks yummy in his faux navy whites. And his dancing was quite yummy too. AND HE WAS LEADING!!! HOORAY!!! His hip action was good too, but he has a little bit further to go with that. But I agree with Len that it was his best dance so far.
My Score: 9 Judges Score: 27 (9, 9, 9)Skip to 1:48 for dance.
Kirstie/Maks (Foxtrot) – Quick visit from John Travolta. No biggie. But he was funny. Damn Maks is fine!!! He did the whole thing with no shirt. Opps. I think I just drooled on my computer. As for the dancing, the best news is nothing happened. No falls. No issues with shoes. Just good, solid dancing. It was weird for a foxtrot, but Maks was half naked the whole time, so I don’t care what they dance as long as he looks like that.
My Score: 8 Judges Score: 23 (8,7,8)PS. Can we talk about the bulge?
Can a girl get a cold shower?
Kendra/Louis (Foxtrot) – This was the 1000th dance of DWTS. Kendra looked kinda like a deranged Betsey Ross, and Louis was a strange Uncle Sam, but I guess it worked, in it’s own weird way. Not a whole lot of actual foxtrot. Some marching. Even some polka. But not much foxtrot. Kendra DID look more confident as if she wanted to just do her thang (yes, thang) and if they didn’t like it – too freaking bad.
My Score: 7 Judges Score: 22 (8, 7, 7)Chelsea/Mark (Samba) – Now THIS is an actual samba, even if it is Miley Cyrus. Side note, I totally want those pants Chelsea is wearing. GREAT dancing!! She really did do a fantastic job. Hips were good, but they need to be great. I’d give them (her hips) a B+. But, clearly, Chelsea lucked out as, seemingly, the only one to actually dance the dance that goes with the song, in tempo and spirit. I think it’s too early for 10s, but she really did do a great job.
