DWTS All-Star Season 15 Week 9 - SEMIFINALS (Read 207 times)

Apparently, not only do we have crazy theme dances, it's also Michael Jackson tribute night. This should be interesting. The opening pro number was pretty fun though. Anyone else getting the feeling that DWTS is slowly tuning into SYTYCD?





Melissa and Tony (CAVEMAN HUSTLE) – A CGI dinosaur? Really? OMG, this was a hot mess. Whoever picked “Caveman Hustle” for these two sure picked a gem. And by gem, I mean turd-bucket of awfulness. Hustle is meant to be in the disco clubs. It's a dance for beginners with little to no technique and super easy choreography. Oh! OH!! And let us not ignore one of the most god-awful songs from the early 90s. “Walk the Dinosaur?” REALLY??? WHICH PRODUCER (who was obviously high as a kite) THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE ENTERTAINING? All I can do is shake my head in disbelief. Bless poor Tony's heart. This was atrocious. MY SCORE: 7 JUDGES SCORE: 9, 9.5, 9 = 27.5





Shawn and Derek (KNIGHT RIDER BHANGRA) – Apparently, this is sort of like Bollywood. Maybe? I don't really get it. Whatever it's supposed to be, that was one of the strangest routines I've ever seen. Not train wreck like Tony and Melissa, but “What exactly am I looking at” strange. I didn't hate it, but I didn't really get what was supposed to happen. Merely for the fact that I didn't hate it, I'll give it a decent score. MY SCORE: 9.5 JUDGES SCORE: 10, 10, 10 = 30 In the Celebraquarium, Shawn confessed that, even though she'd just danced it, she still didn't know what Bhangra was. Neither do we, honey. Neither do we.





Apolo and Karina (BIG TOP JAZZ) – Jazz is a style I think we're all, at least somewhat, familiar with, so this one shouldn't be awful. Right? And I don't think it was awful. It's wasn't awesome, but I think that was due to the fact that they both appeared soooooo under confident with this one. Apolo slipped walking up to Karina and (if I could have seen his eyes) I would bet money he was scared poop-less. A slight fall like that can completely throw you off when you are unsure about the entire routine. They seemed to settle down a little toward the middle, but it just felt off. Not terrible, but off. MY SCORE: 8.5 JUDGES SCORE: 8.5, 9, 9.5 = 27





Emmitt and Cheryl (ESPIONAGE LINDY HOP) – This one seemed HELLA easier than the others. First off, Lindy is an actual ballroom dance (that we've seen before) and the theme isn't THAT far out there. Secondly, Emmitt just does NOT want to commit to anything that might make him look silly, and for that, he loses points. Sorry dude. You either do it full out, or you go home. That's just how I feel about that. MY SCORE: 8.5 JUDGES SCORE: 9, 9, 9 = 27





Kelly and Val (SURFER FLAMENCO) – OMG, what the heck just happened? (A) The routine was really good. (B) Val is in a speedo. (C) Did I actually like this routine??? Surprisingly, I really did. I KNOW!!! I'm as shocked as you are. MY SCORE: 10 JUDGES SCORE: 8, 9, 8.5 = 25.5

Melissa and Tony (ARGENTINE TANGO) – The same old complaints about Melissa crop up for me with this routine. The lifts were FANTASTIC, but the Tango parts were garbage. She has Z-E-R-O ballroom technique and that still angers me. Still, this had the right amount of drama and the lifts were really, really good. I guess Meatloaf was right – two out of three ain't bad. MY SCORE: 9+7 = 16 JUDGES SCORE: 10, 10, 10 = 30 + 27.5 = 57.5 **cough** Overscored **cough**





Shawn and Derek (ARGENTINE TANGO) – WOW. THAT WAS FRIGGIN' AWESOME. Seriously. There is NOTHING to complain about here. Shawn was everything Melissa wasn't. EVERYTHING. MY SCORE: 10 +9.5= 19.5 JUDGES SCORE: 9, 10, 10 = 29 + 30 = 59 <--- Carrie Ann continues to be the greatest waste of space ever.





Apolo and Karina (RUMBA) – However much their first number was a mess, this one was near perfection. They were MUCH more confident with this number, and it showed. I think Apolo upped his game and danced with some really nice hip action and he, at times, even looked like he was leading!! I know!!! MY SCORE: 10+8.5=18.5 JUDGES SCORE: 10, 10, 10 = 30 + 27 = 57





Emmitt and Cheryl (TANGO) – For some reason, one I can't quite put my finger on, this one fell flat for me. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't awesome. That's about all I can say. MY SCORE: 8.5+8.5=17 JUDGES SCORE: 9, 9, 9 = 27 + 27 = 54





Kelly and Val (RUMBA) – Loved it. Flat out LOVED. IT. The lighting, the dancing, Val's open shirt – it was AAALLLLL working for me, y'all. Very well done. MY SCORE: 10+10=20 JUDGES SCORE: 9.5, 9.5, 9.5 = 28.5 + 25.5 = 54

It seems like Tony ripped off a lot of Derek's choreography from their tribal samba. I was bored watching it. The Argentine Tango, the lifts were good but her legs and feet were distracting. Something just seemed majorly off.

Shawn and Derek's dance was just weird, but well done. Wow. Their Argentine Tango was awesome (Not Gilles awesome). I think the song really helped the routine though. It has the nice beat and the slide sound to really emphasize the movement of the choreography. You can hear and see it at the same time.

Apollo was just bad. The dance was just strange and just didn't work. His rhumba was yummy. His hips looked great. Can I take him home?

Can Emmitt please go home? I didn't even watch all of his tango. I can't believe he is still here and Gilles is gone.

Kelly and Val's flamenco was good. Watching Kelly's movements though they could have been a little sharper and a little stronger. I saw the uproar from Maks on twitter last night about the low scores and I do think they got underscored on that one. Kelly has really surprised me with these routines. I love her connection with Val and it shows through their dancing. The push and pull in their rhumba was great. I loved it.

Melissa and Tony. The dinosaur? Ugh. The parts not in hold were alright, but the rest was a mess. Second dance, I liked the entertainment part of it, the sexiness of the choreography and the song I loved.

Shawn and Derek. Is it just me or when I saw the movements of the Bhangra in the rehearsal footage and knew they were doing it to Knight Rider, I understood the song/dance choice (or I thought I did anyway). Still, wow. I don't quite know how to compare it to a real Bhangra or know if their technique even was good, but what an amazing interpretation of Knight Rider. Second dance, slap Carrie-Ann because she's nuts! No, Shawn and Derek's didn't ooze the sensuality of Tony and Melissa's dance, but there was still passion and intensity and the lines! Goodness the lines were gorgeous.

Apolo and Karina. Yeah the jazz was a flop. It had good parts but it seemed in several places they were slipping and not connecting as dance partners should. Second dance, HOT DAMN! Yeah, that sums it up nicely.

Emmitt and Cheryl. Yeah, they had the least "What were the producers smoking?" combinations and it still felt like the was half-assed. (oops, I'm cussing a bit too much this morning, me thinks). It just didn't feel like he gave it his all and the routine didn't seem that challenging. Second dance, No, he just didn't have dances that suited him this week. The tango was alright, but not wowing.

Kelly and Val. I was stunned by their first dance. I love their interpretation. It was the least cheesy of all the first dances as they didn't go super into a theme with the actual choreography and the theme was mostly in the song and the last part of the dance. Was it Paso or Flamenco, hard for the viewers to judge (and that's what's wrong with introducing different dance styles without giving background or real explanation of technical differences). Second dance....sizzling and smoking and beautiful.

By the way, did I hear right when Carrie-Ann said that she couldn't believe Melissa was the underdog? Is Melissa the underdog? I thought Kelly was. Color me confused.

I'm fine with both. Melissa's story is too great for her not to be there (the only non-winner of the bunch). I like how far Kelly has come (she's improved a LOT). And Shawn has been killing it.

Sad that it's an all girl final, but I'll take it.

I was hoping for Melissa to go, but I knew it wouldn't happen.
