Week 4 “Classical Week” Everything on youtube is listed as this is week 4, so I'm going to start matching that. So here is week 4. Enjoy! (Most of the videos include the rehearsal package.)
Dance Troupe demo – (Paso Doble) – I was more impressed with the violin guy. The dancing was …nice… but he was superb. Looks like the dancers were told this afternoon that they had to dance, so they made up the routine in about 30 mins. Blah.
Romeo/Chelsie – (Paso Doble) – Romeo says he listens to all kinds of music, from Taylor Swift to Beethoven. Seriously? Why do I doubt that? They danced to the “Diamond” song from the Debeer’s commercials. Chelsie was twirling and turning all over the place. Romeo was pretty good, although he danced a good deal less than she did. He’s still wearing the wrong shoes, by the way. However, I think he held his own. My Score: 8. Judges Scores: 23 (7, 8, 8).
Kendra/Louis – (Viennese Waltz) – Dancing to Nessun Dorma (by a fabulous soprano), they danced a VERY fast V. Waltz. Poor Kendra looked a little lost and very scared, as if she knew the dance was a little beyond her ability, right now. She was never able to get beyond that and her performance suffered. Too bad. My Score: 6. Judges Score: 18 (6, 6, 6).
Sugar Ray/Anna – (Viennese Waltz) – It’s ballet time!!! This V. Waltz was the Waltz of the Flowers from the Nutcracker. Anna looked every bit the Russian ballerina. Sugar Ray? Not so much. Just hearing the music made me wish I was back in ballet class. Sigh. As for Sugar and Anna, there seemed to be a little too much ballet and not enough ballroom. It didn’t really work for me. I’m shocked that Len enjoyed it. He never likes anything that isn’t 100% ballroom. Wow. Amazing how they will slaughter someone with talent about how their routine was too much about entertainment and not enough substance (see Chelsea below). But Sugar Ray, I guess they feel sorry for, because they did the whole “It wasn’t perfect, but it sure was entertaining” baloney. My Score: 6. Judges Score: 21(7, 7, 7).
Petra/Dimitri – (Paso Doble) – Dancing to what I call the “Spaghetti Song” (because it always makes me think of spaghetti), it was a very Spanish Paso. At times it looked like his was fighting with her, and not in a good way. It looked a little too forced to me. Her posture is still all wrong, but it looks like she MIGHT be getting better. I have to give her credit for that. She’s clearly working hard, so props to her. My Score: 7. Judges Score: 23 (8, 7, 8).
Dance Troupe demo – (Waltz). The girl had a bump it in her hair and all I could think of was Taylor. LOL I couldn't find a video for this one. Guess it was so unimpressive that no one bothered to post it on youtube. Can't say that I blame them either.
Ralph/Karina – (Waltz) – They danced to the theme from “Romeo and Juliet.” He is seriously too cute, btw. Clearly ballroom is his strength, as the mojo from week one is definitely back!!! This waltz was FANTASTIC!!!! Great emotion, great lines, awesome footwork. It was just really, really good. I know it’s too soon for them to give out any 10s, but if it were later in the season, he would totally deserve them. Well done!!! My Score: 9. Judges Score: 25 (8, 8, 9).
Hines/Kym – (Paso Doble) – I know I’ve heard their song before, but I can’t tell you what it was. As for the dancing, it was really, really good too. The lighting show was a bit distracting and I feel like that took away from the performance, but Hines is going to end up in the top 3 for sure. He’s just growing like crazy. Good for him!! My Score: 8. Judges Score: 25 (9, 8, 8). Audience was booing after the scores were announced.
Chelsea/Mark – (Viennese Waltz) – From the hat Mark’s wearing I can tell this is the music from Harry Potter. That’s a whole lot of concept for a V. Waltz, and not a whole lot of ballroom. I’m afraid they are going to get hammered again for this. It was a great routine though, but it wasn’t appropriate for this round. Mark seems to enjoy the freestyle too much. Len commented that the V. Waltz is 300 years old and they should have honored that. I can’t believe I’m saying it, but I agree (to a point) with Len. There WERE a number of traditional V. Waltz patterns, but the contemporary choreography in between them was too distracting to me. Chelsea was beautiful though and she did a great job. My Score: 8. Judges Score 26 (9, 8, 9).
Chris/Cheryl – (Paso Doble) - Hmmm. Interesting. I’m not quite sure what I think of this. On one hand, it’s just more junk from Cheryl where she’s dancing way more than he is. On the other hand, Chris did really well with what he did, and he was totally with the music, which is crazy hard to do. Overall, I think it was a great effort on his part, but lousy choreography on her part. So I’m torn. My Score: 8. Judges Score: 23 (8, 7, 8).
Kirstie/Maks – (Waltz) – Can we stop talking about the fall already? Obviously not. This week, however, Kirstie was having a new pain. Not from the fall though. We forget she’s 60. But, damn, she’s got guts. I like her more each week. Uh-oh, did her skirt just get caught on her shoe? Oops. Nope her shoe just came off while she was dancing. Then she kind of messed up the steps too. I feel so bad for her, and for Maks too!! Oh well. I doubt they’re in danger of going home. On to next week! My Score: 7. Judges Score: 22 (7, 7, 8).
Judges Leaderboard Chelsea (28) Hines (25) Ralph (25) Romeo (25) Petra (25) Chris (23) Kirstie (22) Sugar Ray (21) Kendra (18)
My Leaderboard Ralph (9) Hines (8) Chelsea (8) Romeo (8) Chris (8) Petra (7) Kirstie (7) Sugar Ray (6) Kendra (6)
My Bottom Three Kendra, Sugar Ray, Chris
Going home: Kendra

Thanks for this DD!! I feel like I watched the show. I watched the first 10 minutes or so then had to go put kids to bed. That violin player is HOT!!! So I enjoyed that much, but didn't really care for Romeo all that much. I will watch the rest and see how I feel about them. Too bad that Kirstie had another rough week. I so want her to do well!

Ok, Chelsea and Mark's dance was just bizarre. I think Ralph and Hines were my favorites. I didn't mind Petra's Paso either. It felt very traditional to me (though I don't really know ballroom).

That's ok. You don't have to know ballroom to know if you enjoyed it. But I agree with what you said about Chelsea/Mark and Ralph and Hines. And I DO know ballroom.

I haven't had a chance to watch yet or the clips ( at work now and cannot watch any form of videos on this computer) however, I really like Chelsea and Mark. I hope they do well. I think she has amazing potential and I have always liked Mark. After reading your commentary I am so surprised he is going so far out of the box this year. Usually the judges love his stuff too!

I think Mark is trying to be the new bad boy of the ballroom. Maks is kind of toned down this year with Kirstie and Derek isn't on this season, so I think Mark is trying to do something to really make himself stand out. It is working but I am not sure it is gaining the type of attention he was after. I usually really enjoy his choreography, but this year he is just a little too far out there for me.

MrsM, thank you for finding that! I searched and searched this morning and could not find it anywhere. As for Mark, my guess is since Chelsea has such little fame (she's only a Disney kid) he figured this was the best way to get people to remember them. After all, people vote for who they remember. On top of that, she's quite talented, so she can pull off the choreography. I'm afraid it may backfire in the end, and I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see them in the bottom 3 tonight. Keep in mind, the final 3 standing aren't always the BOTTOM three. I think they manipulate that part to remind people to vote and to send a message to the pros. It's all a conspiracy anyway, right?

Just catching up on this...I loved the concept to the Harry Potter dance. Yeah, it wasn't traditional, but the song really isn't either. I think it worked in an odd sort of way. It did feel frantic though. At least Kristie had presence of mind to keep up with the routine and not let something distracting take over (like the fall last week). I loved Romeo/Chelsie's dance, at least as a strong start to the show. I thought it was kinda hot myself and I'm not a Romeo fan. Kendra just looked uncomfortable, unsure of herself. Ralph/Karina....wow, I was like Carrie Ann and got swept up in the "story" of the dance. It was really beautiful, breathtaking, and heartbreaking. His lines were spot on, I thought. Hines was really good as well. Of course, I'm partial to the Paso Doble anyway. Well, that and the Argentine Tango.
This is one episode that will stay on my DVR, for me...and for my husband. He always says he would prefer them to be more "traditional" and not showy and I think he would like this episode. I did have to agree with him that the classical music does make the dancing seem more dramatic, grander or more elaborate...whatever the word is to describe it.

UPDATE Sugar Ray was eliminated. I'm not all that surprised, but it really should have been Kendra. On to week 5!

Didn't surprise me much. Fanbase wise Kendra has a lot more than he does.
