Chapter 17 FIELD It was now a few weeks since Melanie and Vic had first met. they had been getting to know each other for a while now. And, surprisingly, Vic was helping Melanie get over losing Philip. The two had been riding along on Vic's motorcycle for a while and had stopped in a field to have lunch. MELANIE: So, we've been hanging out a lot for the alst few weeks, but I never asked you, how long have you been in Salem? VIC: Well, that depends on which time you mean. The first time, I was only in Salem until I was about a year old. I was born here, but my parents, brothers, and I moved around the time that me and my twin were a year old. MELANIE: You have a twin? VIC: Yeah, Joey. He looks nothing like me, though. MELANIE: I thought Joey was Dr. Johnson's son? VIC: Joey Johnson is. Joey Kiriakis, however, is my twin brother. So, my family and I moved to Dubai. And then when I was a teenager, we moved back to Salem. We only stayed here for a few months before moving again. Then my parents and youngest brother, Sonny, moved back out here. And, I came back a few days before I met you. How long have you been in Salem? MELANIE: A few years. I used to live in France with a dirtbag I thought was my father. Then, my half-brother, Max Brady, came and brought me here. I've been here ever since, except for a couple months this year that I spent in Europe with my mother and half-brother. Melanie and Vic looked into each other's eyes. Vic put out his hand and touched the cleft of Melanie's chin. They leaned in and kissed. For that one moment, the whole world stood still. But all too soon, they were interrupted by Melanie's phone going off. |

Chapter 18 FIELD Melanie's phone vibrated. The two stopped kissing and went back to looking into each others eyes. MELANIE: Don't move. I'll be right back. Melanie took her phone out of her pocket and opened it. MELANIE: Hello? Pause. MELANIE: Okay, so what's the story? Pause. MELANIE: You have found her, right? Pause. MELANIE: How is she? Pause. MELANIE: Okay. Thanks. Pause. MELANIE: Bye. Melanie hung up the phone. VIC: If I may, what was all that about? MELANIE: That was my brother's butler/man of all work/master of disguise/superhero, Henri. A few weeks ago, my mother was kidnapped and my brother sent Henri to find her. VIC: And your brother is Max, right? MELANIE: No. Sorry, I didn't get to finish the whole story. So, a couple years ago, I found out that my parents weren't who I thought they were. My real parents were two doctors. My mom has a son named Nicholas. He's the brother I was referring to. VIC: So, Max isn't your brother? MELANIE: No, but I still think of him as my brother. VIC: Okay. So, your brother sent his butler to find your mother. And? MELANIE: He found her. VIC: That's great! MELANIE: Yeah. Except, I need to leave Salem to take care of her for a while. |

Chapter 19 SALEM PLACE Mia had a bag packed and was on her way out of Salem. MIA (thinking): It was a mistake coming back here. I really thought my plan would work this time. Guess I was wrong. She didn't know where she was going to, but she hoped it would be better than where she'd come from. WOMAN: Where do you think you're goin'? Mia recognized that voice. She stopped and turned around. MIA: Nicole? Sure enough, there was Nicole standing in front of her. FIELD MELANIE: I have to go. VIC: I understand. Family comes first. MELANIE: Yeah. I'll really miss you, though. I know we've only been together a few weeks, but I really like you. VIC: And I you. Melanie leaned on Vic's shoulder. Vic put his arms around her. VIC: Tell you what, though, I could make it so we donut have to miss each other. MELANIE: You mean come with me? VIC: Yeah. If you want me to, that is. MELANIE: I do. I mean, I'd love it if you came with me. VIC: Great. Just gotta make one stop before we go: my parents house. MELANIE: Two stops, actually. I need to pack. VIC: Well, let's get started. Ready, Miss Layton? MELANIE: Ready. The bike started up again. As she did every time it started, Melanie got chills down the back of her spine. |

Wow, Vic is going with Melanie. This should be really interesting.
I'm totally looking forward to the conversation between Nicole (a professional schemer) and Mia (an amateur). Should be good.
