Chapter 40
Melanie knew what she had to do, but that didn’t help her with the courage to be able to do it. So she would put it off. Her best defense mechanism- procrastination. The only problem with this was she couldn’t pretend to be something she wasn’t. It was hard for her to hide the fact that she had her memory back. In reality, she also hadn’t yet had the opportunity to even talk to Chad. She felt a little guilty since she hadn’t had much contact with him since the kiss; he probably was feeling just as guilty about that as she was about her own feelings.
She took a deep breath before opening the door to the coffee shop and walking in. She looks over to the counter and smiles when she sees Sonny’s surprised and happy face.
“Melanie!” He hurries around the counter and greets her with a hug.
She laughs, “Hi, Sonny.”
They break away, Sonny’s eyes widen at her figure, “It’s, uh, been such a long time since I’ve seen you!”
“Yeah,” She laughs, “It has, hasn’t it.”
“You look so beautiful, Melanie.” Sonny smiles, “Really, beautiful.”
“Thank you,” She tilts her head adoringly, “I’ve missed you, Sonny.”
“I’ve missed you! I’m so glad you’re here!”
Melanie nods, “Me too… Is, um, Chad here?”
“Yeah! He’s in the back, I’ll go get him.”
“Thanks…”
“Can I get you something first? I mean… not coffee obviously. Some herbal tea?” He watches her unimpressed face, then he raises an eyebrow, “Chocolate milkshake?”
“Oh!” Melanie’s eyes widen, “Now that sounds delicious.”
“Okay, milkshake it is!” Sonny chuckles as heads behind the counter and begins to make her drink.
Melanie wanders over to the booth and takes a seat, taking out her phone. Chad walks out of the back room and spots her sitting in the corner, intently focused on the small device in her hands.
“Sonny… why didn’t you tell me she was here?”
“Oh, sorry Chad. I was on my way in to get you but I’m making her a drink first.”
“She wants to see me?”
Sonny nods, “Yeah… Here, take this to her.” He hands him the milkshake.
Chad cautiously travels to the table, drawing her attention from her phone when he sets the milkshake in front of her.
“Thanks Son-” She looks up, surprised, “Oh! Chad, hey!” She smiles.
“Hi… How are you?”
“Good,” She raises her brow and motions to the seat across from her, “Have a seat…”
He does as she says, “Um, Sonny said you wanted to see me?”
“Yeah…” She looks down, then back up at him with a deep breath, “I need to talk to you about something.”
“Everything okay?” Chad was concerned.
“Yes, for the most part.” She smiles small, “I guess I should just get to the point… um…” She takes a deep breath and looks him in the eye, “I have my memory back.”
“You do?!” Chad’s eyes widen in surprise before a large smile fills his face, “Oh my God, Melanie, that’s the greatest news!”
She smiles, opening her mouth to speak but without the words she intended, “Yeah, it’s… it’s great.”
Chad jumps up and hugs her, then leans back placing a hand to her face, “I can’t believe this… you have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to hear you say that.”
“I can imagine… I can’t even begin to know what these past few months have been like for you.”
“Well, it’s fine. None of that matters now that you have your memory back,” His face and voice reflect his euphoric state as he sits back down in the chair.
“Chad… I…” She looks up at him, swallowing hard she forces a smile, “I’m still getting used to all of this… I- I just need some time.”
“Okay…” He nods, “Whatever you need. I mean… I’m sure you have a lot to get used to.”
She narrows her eyes, “A lot has changed, you know?”
“I do know that,” Chad chuckles slightly, with an affirming nod.
Melanie tilts her head, looking down to avoid showing her emotions, “I’ve been under a lot of pressure lately… and I just, I feel like I need to relax for a bit before I make any big decisions.”
“Yeah…” He furrows his brow, “What do you mean big decisions?”
She shrugs, “Nothing, really. I just don’t want to make any major changes just because I have my memory back. I need time to get to know this new reality again. Re-examine my life a bit.”
Chad looks down, realization crossing his face, “Like being with me…”
Melanie’s eyes grow sad as she stares at him with no comment.
He raises his eyebrows in surprise, “Really?”
“Chad…”
He shakes his head, “It’s okay, Melanie… I should have known this would happen.”
“Listen, Chad.” She takes a deep breath, “So much has changed with me and my life. I love you and I’m sure I always will. But I’m in a very different place right now, as a person and I’m not sure how to translate that into a relationship with you…”
“Is it going to be translated into a relationship with someone else?” His voice was clear, almost icy.
Melanie shakes her head, “No, that isn’t it at all.”
“Really? Because it seems like you and Philip are awfully happy together.” He looks up, his eyes are sharp, like daggers through hers.
“Chad, it’s not…” She shakes her head as she looks down, “Philip has nothing to do with this.”
“I’m sorry, Melanie, if it offends you that I don’t really believe that. I mean… you thought you were still married to him for like a month! Then you’ve continued to live in the same house with him… Now you get your memory back and you no longer want to be with me? Jeez, wonder why…” He holds back from allowing his voice to grow.
“I’m sorry…” She meets eyes with him, her voice cracking as she speaks.
He shrugs, “I guess there isn’t anything to be sorry for. You can’t help how you feel, right?”
“No, I can’t,” She sniffs her tears, “Trust me, I’ve tried.”
“So, you just don’t have feelings for me anymore? Is that it? They’re just gone?” He narrows his eyes, his voice is fierce but quiet.
Melanie looks up, her eyes brimming with tears, “It’s not that simple, no. You don’t love someone like I loved you and just have your feelings gone. I care about you, Chad…”
“You just said you ‘loved’ me… So I guess that’s my answer.” He shrugs, letting out a sarcastic scoff.
Melanie looks up, wearily, “I love you, Chad. I do love you… just...”
“Not in the same way…” He nods, “I get it.”
“I hope you know, this isn’t easy for me.”
Chad nods, “And I hope you know that it doesn’t matter to me whether we are together or not, I’m going to be a part of my daughter’s life, Melanie…” His tone was accusatory.
“Of course you are! Oh my God, Chad, I would never EVER try to keep your daughter from you.”
“Yeah, well, you're a fool if you think I’m going to let my daughter call Philip Kiriakis, ‘Daddy’… or whoever else you have in and out of your revolving door of relationships.”
Melanie looks up at him, her eyes filling with tears, “You really think I would let that happen?”
“How am I supposed to know?”
“That hurts…” She looks down, wiping a tear from her cheek, “I would hope that you'd think I was a good enough person to never let that happen.”
Chad sighs; He shakes his head, “I’m sorry, that was out of line.”
“No, it wasn’t,” Melanie shrugs, “I can imagine you don’t know what to expect from me at this point.”
“Does this have anything to do with what happened after the accident? I mean… I know you heard that I had gotten a gun and everything and…”
“No,” She shakes her head, “It’s nothing you did, Chad. I promise you. I almost wish it was, so I would have a better reason…”
"It's not you, it's me, right?" He meets eyes with her, a soft smile on his lips. Melanie doesn't respond. He nods silently, “So, uh, your due date is coming up fast…”
“Yeah,” She nods, her voice soft, “7 ½ weeks left.”
“If you need anything…” Chad meets eyes with her, wearily.
“Thanks, Chad.” She takes a deep breath. “I think I’m gonna go now… I, um, have some stuff to do…”
“Okay…” Chad nods as he watches her get up.
She opens her mouth as to speak, before flashing him a small, solemn smile; she turns and walks away.
