Chapter 38
Philip entered the dark living room, turning on the light he was surprised to see Melanie laying on the sofa, instinctively putting her hand to her eyes when the light turned on.
“Oh! Sorry, I didn’t know anyone was in here…”
She chuckled as she removed her ear-buds and sat up on the sofa, “What?”
“I said I didn’t know anyone was in here,” He smiles, “I just have to get my computer, I’ll leave you alone.”
“No,” She smiles, “You can stay. I was just listening to music.”
“Well you obviously were enjoying your alone time…”
“Not really,” She shrugs, “I mean. I was alone. So I thought I would make the best of it.”
Philip smiles as he brings his computer to the coffee table, “You like to lay in the dark?” He takes a seat at the opposite end of the sofa.
“Sometimes. It’s kind of cathartic when you can’t see anything and can’t hear anything but the music in your ears. You should try it sometime.” She raises an eyebrow, her face bright.
“Maybe I will, it looks like it worked wonders on you! Feeling better?”
“A little,” She nods, “I just have some stuff to figure out.”
“Well I don’t have any doubt in my mind that you will be able to do that. You’re very smart.”
Melanie smiles up at him, “Well, thank you!” Her eyebrows scrunch as she places a hand to her stomach, “Oh!”
“What?” Concern fills Philip’s face, “Oh no, are you okay?”
“Yes, I’m fine,” She chuckles, taking his hand and placing it on her stomach, “Sophie’s practicing her dance moves…”
Philip’s face brightens into a large smile, “That’s her? She’s kicking?”
“Yep,” Melanie smiles, “She’s rarely ever not kicking… but she’s particularly active right now.”
“Oh! Jeez!” Philip laughs as his hand bounces off of Melanie’s belly, “Strong kid… Of course I wouldn’t expect anything else. I’ve seen the way you kick…” he smirks.
“Look out… pretty soon a junior me will be coming into this world. There will be two of us.”
“Did you warn the authorities?” Philip jokes, his hand now roaming Melanie’s stomach, searching for more movement.
She smiles as she looks down, watching his hand; gently placing hers over his. Philip looks up at her, a soft smile on his lips. Melanie had never looked as beautiful to him as she did right in that moment. He gazes into her eyes, his smile relaxing as she leans in close to him, whispering a simple, "Philip...". He reciprocates the action, leaning down, meeting their lips together. They break away for a short time, and then Philip encases his hand through her hair, cradling the back of her neck, kissing her again. Melanie leans back into the corner of the sofa, as he raises to his knees; they continued to devour each other in the moment of passion that had been building for months. Philip leans back, looking into Melanie’s face, both of their lips swollen and red, their breathing labored.
She locks eyes with him, “I love you, Philip.”
“I love you too… I’ve never stopped.”
Melanie brushes her hand along his cheek, her face falling when suddenly he leans back, sitting on the sofa beside her.
“I love you, Melanie,” He looks up at her, “But I can’t do this…” He watches as Melanie swallows hard situating herself back into her seat, “We don’t know when your memory is going to come back. You could wake up tomorrow and be in love with Chad again and I can’t go through that. And I can’t do this to Chad in the mean time.” He looks up wearily, “We just can’t.”
“Philip,” Melanie looks down, “I already remember…”
“What?” He looks up curiously.
“I remember Chad and our life together,” She locks eyes with him, “I’ve remembered for a little while now, I just didn’t know how to tell anyone…”
“But, you just… we just…” Philip shook his head, “Why?”
“Because I love you.” Her eyes were wide and serious, “I love you, Philip. I think about my future and I don’t see it with Chad. I see it with you. Having you back in my life for these past few months has been amazing.”
Philip lowers his brow, “But you haven’t told Chad…”
“No,” she shakes her head, “I don’t know how to tell him.”
Philip looks away from Melanie and takes a deep breath. Something about this wasn’t sitting right with him. He had changed. This was something that in the past he would have jumped at the opportunity. But now, he was trying to stay out of his previous business of ruining lives. The last thing he wanted was to take Melanie away from Chad. He knows that feeling of loss all too well and he would never want to contribute to that. Not to mention this immense feeling that was looming over him of history repeating. He and Melanie had been down this road before. She chose him instead of Nathan and look at how that turned out. How could he trust Melanie’s feelings? How could he trust that she wouldn’t decide down the line that Chad, the father of her child, was who she wanted to be with?
“Philip?” Melanie reached a hand out, covering his. He looked up from his daze, quickly pulling his hand away.
“No, Melanie,” He shakes his head, standing up from the sofa, “I can’t do this. We can’t do this.”
“We can’t do what?” She looks up, confused, from her seat on the sofa.
“We’ve been down this road before, you know? This triangle thing is the same story again… you bouncing your feelings back and forth, can’t decide who you want.”
Melanie swallows hard, “You don’t trust me…”
“No, I don't... I mean, I trust you. I just…” He shakes his head, “It would never work. And I don’t want to be the one to blame for Chad’s broken heart.”
“But you aren’t, Philip.” Melanie shakes her head, rising from her seat to stand beside him, her eyes brimming with tears, “You’re not to blame for anything! I can’t help how I feel. I don’t love Chad in the same way. I don’t want to be with him. It’s me, I'm to blame, no one else!”
“No, I'm not blaming for your feelings, Melanie. But, this isn’t just you. If I wasn’t here…” Philip shakes his head, “This can’t happen. It just can’t. I’m sorry.” He shakes his head and picks up his computer, putting it under his arm, turning on his heals he heads toward the door.
“Philip…” Melanie watches as Philip disappears behind the door. She sits back down in the corner of the sofa, resting her head in her hand, tears falling from her eyes.

I love how you have Philip thinking here. It is gut wrenching but he has learned from his past. I love him so mature. I like that you addressed the trust issues and Melanie's past uncertainties of the heart. So well done.
Now my girl Mel is in yet another mess. Looks like she will be forced to truly figure out what she wants.
I must read this chapter again....I loved their hands on her belly and of course the kissing. Oh and all the angst ;D

I'm glad Melanie admitted her feelings for Philip. Philip is in a tough spot, having now been on all sides of this emotional triangle. He is obviously drawn to Melanie, but he's trying to do the right thing. You have me really wondering how all of this is going to turn out. Great job, Sjw!

Chapter 39
Parker is sitting on his knees at the kitchen table, playing with an action figure, of course with sound effects and facial expression included. Maggie chuckles from the counter.
Parker suddenly looks up, “Don’t ferget I not like the cruft.” His face is full of pure disgust.
“How could I forget that?” She smiles as she brought a plate with his sandwich and a few carrots to the table. Kissing his head, she takes the action figure from him and places it on the counter.
He takes a huge bite, “So much jelly! I love dis sammich! Fanks!” His mouth full of food, but his face is bright.
She laughs as she brings him his sippy cup of milk, “You’re welcome… don’t talk with your mouth full, you’ll choke.”
He nods, taking a drink of his milk.
Maggie turns to head back to the counter and smiles when she sees Melanie entering from the hall, “Hi, sweetie!”
“Hi…” Melanie smiles as Parker notices her and waves.
“Hi Melnee!” He smiles as she walks over and ruffles his hair, before turning and taking a seat at the island.
Maggie looks up at her with a smile, “You want a sandwich?”
“Is that bologna?” Melanie’s eyes widened at the bag.
“Yes… you want bologna? I didn’t think you liked it…” She raised an eyebrow as Melanie nods sheepishly.
She shrugs, “Pregnancy… I don’t know what to tell you.”
“Okay, bologna it is, then!” Maggie chuckles, looking up at her granddaughter curiously, “What are you doing today?”
“Nothing, much” Melanie shrugs, looking around, “Where is, uh, Philip? Is he here?”
“No, he’s not. He’s with Victor. The Titan golf tournament is today.”
“Oh,” She nods, breathing a silent sigh of relief, “They do an awful lot of golfing, huh?”
“They do,” Maggie raises an eyebrow as she watches Melanie munch on a carrot, “So tell me, why did your whole body just relax once you found out Philip wasn’t around?”
Melanie looks up at Maggie wide eyed, “What?” She watches as Maggie gives her a knowing look. She looks down, shrugging her shoulders, “I just don’t really feel alike being around him right now, that’s all.”
“Did something happen?”
“Yeah,” Melanie sighs, “A lot happened.” She looks up; Maggie raises her eyebrows waiting for her to continue, “I have to tell you something…”
“What is it, honey?” Maggie tilts her head in question as she hands Melanie’s her sandwich.
“I, um,” She takes a deep breath, “Remember when we went for ice cream that night? And we saw Chad?”
“Yes.” Maggie nods.
“Well after you all left, Chad and I were alone… and he… well he kissed me.”
Maggie’s eyes widened, “He kissed you.”
“Yeah,” She nods, “The kiss isn’t really important… I mean, I guess it is, but anyway, after that kiss… I started to have flashes of memory.” She looks up at Maggie listening intently, “And little by little, things started coming back.”
“So, you’re telling me you have your memory back?” Maggie eyes were wide.
She nods, “Yeah… I do.”
Maggie studies her closely, “But you’re not happy… actually, you seem less happy then you were before.”
“Ha, well, that’s a pretty accurate observation…”
“Keep going, Melanie…” Maggie encourages.
“Okay,” She draws a deep breath, “So, the thing is… I think my feelings for Chad… They’ve changed. And I remember how I used to feel. I remember the feeling of being happy and in love with him. And I do love him. He’s my daughter’s father… and I think he is a great person. I just don’t have the same feelings for him that I did before.”
Maggie leans into her hands on the counter, “How does Philip fit into all of this?”
“I don’t know…” She shrugs, “He doesn’t I guess.” Her voice cracks with emotion as Maggie reaches out placing her hand over Melanie’s.
Melanie shrugs forcing a smile through her tears, “It doesn’t matter. None of it does. I don’t deserve anyone, because I can never make up my mind.”
“Oh, honey… no that is not true. A lot has happened to you. This isn’t just any kind of average situation, here. You lost your memory. You thought that you were married to Philip.”
“Yes. I did. But we aren’t and I know that now.” She shakes her head, “All of that doesn’t even matter anymore.”
“Melanie, stop saying it doesn’t matter. Because it does. Your feelings matter to so many people. Especially to me and I know to Philip.”
Melanie looks up, her eyes wide and filled with tears, “No, they don’t matter to Philip. He doesn’t trust me.” She shrugs, “I can’t say I blame him.”
“Why doesn’t he trust you?” Maggie was confused.
“He doesn’t trust that I know what I feel… I think he just sees history repeating itself. I don’t know.”
“So you told him…?” Maggie watches as Melanie nods, “And he said that? That he didn’t trust you.”
“Basically.” She takes a deep breath and wipes her tears, “Listen. It’s done. Philip’s reaction doesn’t change the fact that I don’t have the feelings for Chad that I used to. Unfortunately, nothing is going to change that…. I just don’t know what to do about it.”
“Well, of course you have to tell him.”
“How?” Melanie’s voice was strained and tears fell to her cheeks, “How do I do that? How do I knowingly break his heart again? Look at what he almost did after the accident. He was so full of anger and rage… What will he do now?”
“I hope that he would handle it with as much grace as possible,” Maggie raises an eyebrow, “But, there is nothing you can do to control that. You just need to tell him the truth. And that’s what it is, it’s just the truth, from your heart. There is nothing you can do to change it.”
“Yeah, believe me, I’ve tried everything.” She sniffs, “Ignoring it definitely doesn’t work.”
“Never does,” Maggie smiles, “But we always try, don’t we?”
Melanie forces a small smile as Maggie walks around the island and opens her arms taking her into a tight embrace.
“You are doing the right thing.” Maggie kisses her head before Melanie looks up at her.
“I hope so… But all I can do is follow my instincts, right?”
“Right,” Maggie hugs her again, “And take care of yourself and little Sophie.” She smiles as they break.
“Yes,” Melanie smiles, placing a hand to her round stomach, “I think Sophie is going to be pretty self sufficient, though.”
“Who Sophie?” Parker speaks from the table as both Maggie and Melanie turn in his direction.
They exchange glances before Melanie gets up and walks to the table, “Sophie is my baby.”
“Where is she?” He looks around.
“In my belly…” She smiles as she takes his hand, placing it on her stomach, “Can you feel that?”
Maggie smiles from the counter as Parker’s face lights up, “Das a baby in dere?”
“Yep,” Melanie chuckles, “Her name is Sophia… but we can call her Sophie as a nickname.”
“Can she come out?” Parker questions.
“Pretty soon, she will!”
Parker looks up to Maggie who slowly makes her way to the table, “Das Melnee’s baby!!” He points to her stomach.
“I know!” She smiles, “It won’t be long until we will be able to play with her.”
“I love babies,” Parker smiles, “I’s help you wif her?”
Melanie nods, “Of course you can, Parker.” She leans down and kisses his head, then wipes a tear from her cheek.

It's such a difficult situation for everyone. I feel bad for Chad. Melanie could at least try spending a little time with him.

I sort of thought Melanie was feeling a little different before the accident. She reacted strongly to seeing Philip again and even dreamed about him. I wonder how her feelings might have changed for Chad even if there had been no accident? Some loves are just stronger than others.
I adore Maggie and Melanie with a dose of Parker mixed in. They are too sweet.

I feel so bad for Chad. He is going to be crushed. Personally, I think that Melanie needs to move out of the mansion and spend some time away from Phillip and Parker. Maybe she can move in with her dad or mom?? She needs some space!
