Chapter 36
Miranda sat on the bench in the locker room with her legs crossed. She watched as Melanie arranged her things.
“So, have you, uh, told anyone else about your memories?” She looked at her curiously.
Melanie shook her head, “Nope. And I told you… I’m not going to.”
“Melanie… I feel like this isn’t a good idea. I mean, it’s causing you stress and-”
“And stress isn’t good for the baby. Blah, blah, blah… I know. I’ve heard it before. Life is stress. Oh well.” Melanie shrugs as she takes her hair out of the pony tail it was in.
“I’m not trying to be bossy, I’m just trying to be a voice of reason in all of this. I know that you’re mind is swirling and I would hate to see something happen to you because you have yourself so stressed out.”
Melanie shook her head, “Nothing is going to happen to me, I promise.” She places a hand on her ever growing stomach, “As you can see, this little girl stops for nothing. She’s determined to make it into this world… guns blazing.”
“Just like her mom…”
“Maybe,” She smiles, “Anyway, I’m fine, Randa. You really don’t need to worry.”
“Well, what can I do?”
“Nothing… just exactly what you always do. Be my best friend,” Melanie sits down and smiles.
“I’m here for you, Melanie. I am. I don’t want you to feel like you have to sort all of this out on your own. I want you to tell me whatever is on your mind.”
Melanie shakes her head, “You don’t want me to do that…”
“Of course I do!”
“I don’t even want to listen to myself talk about it.”
“Well, I want to.”
“Okay,” She looks up at Miranda, wearily, “What do I do, if my feelings have changed?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean,” She sighs, “Everything changed when I had the accident. I couldn’t remember Chad… and I found out I was pregnant. Moving in with my grandma and everything- my whole life is different.”
"Yeah," Miranda nods.
“And I’ve changed… as a person; I have changed a lot in all of this.” She shakes her head, “And-”
“And?”
“I keep hoping that if I just give myself some more time, maybe my feelings will come back, you know? Maybe they are like the memories? But I remember everything. I remember how I used to feel when I was around Chad. I remember our life together and how much I love him. And I do, I love him. But not in the same way…” She pauses, looking away from her friend, “Everything is different.”
“I know,” Miranda sighs, “You can’t expect yourself to feel exactly the same way… You are under a lot of pressure, too. That has a huge influence on how in touch you are with your feelings… maybe you just need some time away?”
“No,” She shakes her head, “Miranda, if I could change how I feel, I would…” She chokes back her tears, “I can’t. No matter what I do, I can’t change how I feel. When I think about my future, it’s not with Chad. How do I tell him that? How am I supposed to get his hopes up by telling him that I remember him, only to say I don’t want to be with him? I can’t break someone’s heart like that…” She shakes her head, wiping a tear, “I don’t think I can do it.”
Miranda places a hand on her friend’s back, “Yeah, but if that’s how you feel, what other option do you have?”
“I’m so afraid, though.” She sniffs, looking up, “It’s not like I have the best track record when making decisions about men.”
“You just need to trust yourself. Don’t doubt your feelings just because you don’t think it’s what you should be feeling. Sometimes your heart knows more than your mind will let you.”
Melanie’s eyes widen as she nods, “Don’t I know that.”
“I think you should take whatever time you need to sort this all out before you talk to Chad. But keep in mind, you can’t let it go on forever.”
“I know,” she nods, “I don’t think things are going to change, though, Miranda. I really don’t. I just wish I didn’t have to break Chad’s heart… again.”
Miranda pulls Melanie into a hug.

I really liked the mental image of Philip in a pink apron too, only in my mind, he was wearing nothing else.

Chapter 37
It was 3pm and Melanie was still in her pajamas. It was her day off, and although it wasn’t a conscious choice, apparently she was choosing to do absolutely nothing. Good thing everyone in the house had plans, or she might have had some embarrassment about the fact that the only time she had exited her bedroom that day was to go down stairs and collect large quantities of food to bring back upstairs. She now sat cross-legged on her bed, fixated on the television, a pint of ‘Ben and Jerry’s’ in her grasp, unfazed by the knock at the door. Ceasing to look up from the television she yells, “Come in!”
Maggie peaks her head around the door and furrows her brow at the sight of her granddaughter on the bed, her eyes widening slightly in surprise.
“Hi!” Melanie looks up for a moment and back at the T.V., “I thought you were at work?”
“I was…” She made her way into the room, picking up a pop-tart wrapper from the floor, “Are you sick or something?”
“What?” She looks at the wrapper Maggie holds up before throwing in the garbage, “No, I’m not sick…” She looks down at her pajamas, “Just, uh, lazy?” She looks up sheepishly.
Maggie takes a seat on the edge of the bed, her eyes narrowing at the television, “What are you watching?”
“Dr. Phil. It’s about this woman who is 500 lbs, and her goal is to be 800! He’s trying to talk her out of it… but he just can’t seem to get through to her…” She watches the television as she scoops another large spoonful of ice cream.
“I see…” Maggie observes, with a nod, “Sounds, uh, interesting.”
“It is.” She speaks with a mouth full of ice cream.
“Um, honey? Are you all right? I mean… it isn’t like you to be in your pajamas at 3:00 in the afternoon.”
Melanie shrugs, “I didn’t have anything to do.”
“Well, you can always find something to do…” Maggie smiles encouragingly.
“Didn’t feel like it today.”
“Okay…” Maggie raises her eyebrows, taking a deep breath, “is there maybe something you would like to talk about?”
She shakes her head, “No, not really…”
“Melanie…”
“What?”
Maggie reaches out and takes the pint of ice cream from her and the remote, turning the T.V. off and setting both items on the nightstand.
“Hey! I was watching that…” Melanie lowers her brow, looking to the ice cream, “And eating that…”
“They’ll both be there when we’re done talking.”
Melanie sighs before leaning back on the bed and rolling to her side to face Maggie, “Okay, fine, what do you want to talk about?”
“Let’s start with what has you so bothered that you’re locked in your room with Dr. Phil and a pint of ice cream?”
“Nothing is bothering me.”
Maggie narrows her eyes, “Melanie, you have been acting strange for over a week now. I’ve pushed it aside when you say you’d rather stay home than go to dinner with us or take Parker to play, but this has hit its last straw. Something is bothering you.”
“I’m just a little tired.”
Maggie brushes her hand along Melanie’s cheek, “I asked you if you felt all right…”
“I feel fine. I’m really fine… I mean I’m tired of…” She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath, “Never mind. I guess tired was a poor choice of words.”
“What are you talking about?”
Melanie sits up to face Maggie, “How do you know whether or not you are making the right decision in life?”
“You follow your heart and listen to your instincts.”
“But what if you can’t trust your heart or your instincts?” Melanie sighs, “Because they have steered you wrong in the past…”
“I don’t think past experiences should ever make you doubt your own instincts. You have to learn from things that happen to you, or you can never move forward.” Maggie shrugs; her voice soft and understanding.
“You make it sound so easy,” Melanie sighs.
“Honey, what are we talking about, here?”
“I’m just thinking out loud, that’s all…”
“About?” Maggie tilts her head, without getting a response, she takes a deep breath, “Melanie… I want to tell you something…”
She looks up, curiously, “What?”
Maggie reaches out, holding her granddaughter’s hand, “I hope you know how proud I am of you…”
Melanie shakes her head, tears filling her eyes, she chokes, "I--"
“No, listen to me…” Maggie warns, “You are stronger and smarter than you give yourself credit for. You have made mistakes in the past, everybody has. But what you’ve done that not everyone does is learn from those mistakes. You have learned and been made a better and stronger person for having experienced them.” She brushes her hand along Melanie’s cheek, “You need to trust yourself and your judgment. Only you know what you want in this life, and only you can make the decisions that will take you where you want to go. You just have to trust yourself enough to do that and everything will fall into place.”
Melanie sniffs her tears and leans over hugging Maggie tightly, “How do you know always know exactly what to say?” They break away.
Maggie smiles, “Oh, I don’t know. It’s a gift.” She chuckles.
“I love you so much.”
“I love you too, my darling girl.” She brushes her hand through Melanie’s hair, then raises an eyebrow, “So, um, do you think you’d be interested in getting out of this room today?”
“Uhh…” Melanie chuckles, “I guess… but first I need to find out what happened to this 500 lb woman.” She reaches over for the remote, picking up the pint of ice cream with it, “and my ice cream’s melting.” She watches as Maggie rolls her eyes with a chuckle, "You said it would still be here when we were done..."

Finally I got to be the first to comment! ;D
Awww Love Maggie and Melanie! You have their personalities shining through so well. Maggie knows just what to say without overdoing it or pushing. She's definitely a pro.
I am a little bit anxious for chapter 38....just saying.
