The morning sun bathes our bedroom in a warm golden light, creating an atmosphere of blissful comfort. Lying in bed, I can feel the deep affection between EJ and I through my expanding stomach. Each flutter from within is a tender reminder of the profound love we have created together.

I was overwhelmed by the tumultuous journey that EJ and I had gone through to get to this place. From two marriages, two divorces, two miscarriages, a few ex-husbands in between, all the way up to his own divorce from Sami - it almost seemed impossible that we could be so blissfully content together now. Despite all the heartache and pain we'd been through, here at the mansion I felt blessed every day that I was with EJ and expecting our baby. Even still, I couldn't help but feel unworthy of such love.

EJ appeared in the doorway, holding a tray with an elaborate breakfast of pancakes, bacon, eggs, and coffee. The steam rising from the mugs made the room feel warm and inviting. He smiled at me as he set out each dish, taking extra care to place them carefully on the table. "Breakfast is served, my love," he said affectionately.

My eyes travel up and down the curves of EJ's body, appreciating his smooth, chiseled muscles that are made even more attractive by the fitted white robe he wears. His presence beside me fills me with warmth and contentment, and I can't help but smile. I motion him to join me on the bed we'd shared last night, and he takes a seat as close as possible without actually touching me.

He settled next to me, strong arms wrapping around me and pulling me close. He placed a tray of breakfast in front of us—scrambled eggs with cheese, pancakes, toast with jam for him, and a cup of coffee for each of us. His hand then found its way atop mine and he rested it over my slightly rounded belly. His fingertips lightly stroked the growing bump, his touch sending waves of warmth and love throughout my body. He looked at me with so much love in his eyes and asked softly, “How’s our little one doing this morning?”

I took in the sight of him - his warm, brown eyes, the slight wrinkles at the corners from so much smiling, and the gentle rise and fall of his chest as he held me close. A joyous warmth spread throughout my body and I felt a palpable connection between us; a connection that spoke of shared dreams, hopes, and a life ahead that we could both look forward to with excitement. “Content," I reply softly, “Just like us."

My heart beating wildly in my chest, I reach up and cup his face in my hands. His skin feels warm against mine and the familiar smell of him sends a wave of love over me. I press my lips gently to his and electricity courses through us. He broke away to move the tray but then his entire attention was on me.

As the kiss grows more passionate, I wrap my arms around him and he holds me tightly. In that moment, I know that nothing can break the bond between us. Our love is unshakable, ever-present, a source of comfort and joy for both of us.

My car, parked inconspicuously across from Nicole and EJ's house, was my own little refuge. I kept my face hidden behind sunglasses, my eyes concealed by the car's tinted windows. I watched them through the windshield, laughing together in their bedroom. The sound of their joy broke through the quiet of the car like a dagger, a harsh reminder of all that I had lost.

The white knuckles of my hands stood out against the dark leather of the steering wheel as I blindly fumbled around in my bag. My fingertips touched a smooth plastic sheet and I slowly removed it, revealing the black and white ultrasound image from my past. A lump formed in my throat as I stared at the small figure that had once been Eric and mine's hope for a future.

My vision blurs as I stare at their picture, taken during happier times. Tears well in my eyes, threatening to fall out of my tightly shut eyelids and splinter the image of my two companions. My chest tightens with a deep longing for closeness and purpose. When Nicole and EJ's laughter reach my ears, pealing like chimes through the stillness of the car, the ache in my heart feels unbearable. It swells as if it's trying to break through its own walls. I know I can only sit here alone and listen, mourning in silence.

The couple embraced in a passionate kiss, oblivious to my presence or the reality of what I had become. I felt like an invisible observer, watching as the morning sun illuminated their love and showing me the stark contrast between our lives. The pain that resulted from my choices was almost tangible, a reminder of how far I had strayed from who I once was.

I smiled warmly remembering that Nicole had been talking about her favorite clam chowder from the Brady family restaurant for days. I decided to surprise her and started hurrying towards the place hoping that I wouldn't be too late.
I meandered to the entrance of our favorite restaurant, my heart skipping a beat as I recognized Nicole. Her full figure was highlighted by her maternity dress, and all I wanted to do was hug her. But then my gaze shifted to the corner table, where Eric sat alone, his expression unreadable and a half-eaten meal in front of him. At that moment, a mix of familiarity and fear enveloped me: something had changed between us, and I wasn't sure what it was.
I watched from the window as Nicole spotted her ex-husband across the room. His eyes widened in surprise, and a slight smile tugged at the corners of his lips as he returned her gaze. A knot of apprehension tightened in my stomach as she slowly made her way over to him. I couldn't help myself and leaned closer to the open door, eavesdropping on their conversation.
“Eric!” Nicole’s voice rings out in surprise, and my heart stutters in my chest. He turns away from the table towards her, a warm smile on his face that doesn’t quite reach his eyes.
“Nicole, it’s good to see you. Would you like to join me?” His voice is calm and inviting, no trace of malice or bitterness despite the fact that they used to be a couple. I can't blame him for wanting to spend time with her - she has a way about her, captivating whoever crosses her path.
I stood, unseen, in the shadows of the corner. Nicole's face lit up when she saw Eric. She accepted his invitation to sit, and I watched as she gracefully crossed her legs and rested her hands in her lap. Jealousy coursed through me, threatening to consume me - here was a piece of Nicole's life that I had no part in.
I lingered, hoping to catch a thread of their conversation. Eric and Nicole's voices intertwined like the roots of an ancient tree, each whispering memories of times long gone. They shared a look that spoke volumes and laughed at jokes only they could understand. I winced as one joke hinted at past wounds they had inflicted on each other. My stomach twisted as I watched Nicole and Eric talking, laughter audible between them. The sun shone brightly on the couple, but a chill ran down my spine regardless. She lightly touched his arm and smiled up at him, and I knew then—she still had feelings for Eric. Doubt spread like wildfire through me, threatening to consume any hope I had of there being any chance for the two of us.
I watched as Nicole and Eric hugged, my heart sinking with each second that passed. I had come to the restaurant full of hope, ready to surprise Nicole with her favorite dish and a bouquet of roses. Now I was walking away from the restaurant, watching them whisper secrets in between hugs. My heart felt heavy and uncertain; had I made a mistake coming here? Was Nicole still entangled in Eric's web or was it just my own insecurity magnifying an innocent situation?
I watched as the sign of the restaurant slowly disappeared in my rearview mirror. The feeling of determination filled my veins – I was determined to fight for Nicole and for our love. We were having a baby that tied us together forever. As I drove away, my only thought was that everything will be alright. The morning air felt cool on my skin, and yet I was still enveloped in a profound silence – as if all my doubts and worries had been erased.

I was transported to another world until the hard click of the door brought me back to reality. I heard EJ's voice, now tinged with surprise, coming from the living room and my heart sank. Instantly, I knew who had just walked in—Sami, EJ's ex-wife. I could hear her heels clicking on the wooden floor, drawing nearer and nearer.
The mere thought of her name, Sami, felt like I was walking through a blizzard. Ten years ago, she was the woman EJ had chosen over me and my unborn baby. The sharp pain of betrayal still stung deep inside me, like an icy wind blowing away my heart’s warmth. That moment had changed everything and left me broken in its wake.
EJ had assured me he was over her, but they hadn't seen each other since our reunion. A part of me felt an icy chill of fear every time I saw EJ's name illuminated on my phone or their pictures on social media. It was like a tiny yet persistent voice in the back of my mind whispering warnings of past repeating itself.
Sami stepped into the room and paused, taking in the tense atmosphere and EJ's rigid posture. From my angle I saw everything reflected in a mirror. His eyes, normally twinkling with mischievousness, were now guarded. “Sami. What brings you here?” he asked, his voice even but conveying a subtle note of unease.
Sami's voice had an unmistakable taunting lilt. I looked into her eyes - a deep, dark blue - and saw the malicious glint that she used to have when we were both in love with the same man. I clamped my hand over the swell of my stomach as if protecting my unborn child from her presence. Her lips curled up in a smirk, like she knew just how much of an effect she had on me and she had no idea I could even see her.
I hovered in the doorway, my heart pounding and a lump growing in my throat. Sami and EJ were standing mere inches apart; his arm muscles flexed as he gestured during their conversation and she had her hand resting lightly on his arm. I could feel the heat radiating off of them as I watched them, their shared laughter floating across the room towards me like a wave of guilt. My stomach twisted as all of my old anxieties and unresolved feelings surged through me.
I back away from the doorway, swallowing down a lump that had formed in my throat. The sound of EJ and Sami's laughter drifted into the kitchen, punctuated by moments of silence - moments when they leaned into each other, as if drawn together by an invisible force. A wave of uncertainty rose up within me. Could their feelings be gone for good? Or was there still something between them that lingered beneath the surface? I watched their shadows dance on the wall, watching deep-rooted thoughts creep out from the darkness.
My knife came down hard on the vegetables, violently dicing them, as if my fear and uncertainty could be diced into tiny pieces just like the carrots. I tried to push away thoughts of Sami—the woman with whom EJ had a past affair and had children with already—but I found myself unable to shake the feeling that this could all happen again. After everything we had built, our family, our love, could it all unravel once more in the face of temptation?
The air seemed to thicken as I stood at the doorway, my breath coming in shallow gasps. I could feel the darkness of my memories creeping over me, threatening to swallow me whole. But before it could take hold, I shook them off and steeled myself for what was to come. Through the open door, I heard the tinkling laughter of Sami, EJ’s ex-wife that invited herself to cause trouble. Fear and doubt swirled inside me, like a tightening string around my heart. Taking a deep breath, I stepped into the living room with my vegetable tray in hand. Sami sat on the couch, smiling widely at something EJ had said. As she shifted her gaze towards me, I saw a glimmer of challenge in her eyes.
Sami froze as soon as she saw me and her face softened in dismay. Her bright red lips twisted into a smirk, her piercing blue eyes narrowing in distaste. She crossed her arms over her chest and with her nose upturned said in a haughty voice, “I see you crawled your way back to my ex-husband, again.”
I took a deep breath and returned her gaze. “Sami, how long are you in town?”
Her expression darkened, but she kept the same aloof posture. “I came for Sloan. To see her for myself. And then I stopped to visit my children - I guess while I'm here,” she replied coldly. “Do you object?”
"There is no stopping you." I turned away from Sami as the cold pitt in my soul couldn't be good for the baby inside me. My heart fluttered I could lose everything, again but I said, "Look EJ, I'm tired. It's been a long day."
He flashed a rare smile, and my heart leaped in my chest. “I'll be right up, darling,” he said, his hand lingering on mine.
As I walked away, my nerves prickled like needles under my skin. I traced circles over my belly, feeling the flutter of life inside - our baby.
At least she hadn't start screaming at me this time. I had to protect our little one, no matter what.
With one last glance back at EJ and Sami, I climbed the stairs to our bedroom. The sound of my footsteps echoed through the empty hallways.
I tried to push the doubt out of my mind as I sat down on the edge of our bed. Would EJ choose me this time? Or would Sami win him back yet again?
I closed my eyes and whispered a prayer.

My nose catches the delectable smell of blueberry muffins from the bakery nearby, making my mouth water. We draw closer to the doctor's office for another weekly visit. Our steps slow down as I think about all that’s changed since we received the news at our first appointment; a newfound comfort washes over me knowing that our little one has grown strong enough in this last month to survive if something were to happen. 
I'm tempted to tell EJ that it's time to find out the sex of our baby, but I resist the urge - we've waited this long, might as well wait another month until we can officially know.
He was here, but his presence felt heavy and uncertain. I knew there had been words exchanged after I'd gone, yet he'd stayed for almost an hour and laid beside me in the night. His closeness made my heart swell, but I couldn't bring myself to share it. In that moment, just his being here was enough.
As we stepped into the square, I heard Sami's voice rising in anger and saw her finger pointing accusingly at a small, trembling figure. My heart sank. The tone of her voice was blistering and I recognized it all too well — she had launched into one of her notorious rants, something she always did with total conviction and certainty. All I could do was stand there in awkward silence, my face burning as I transported myself back to a time when that same righteous fury was directed at me.
Sami stood in the town square, her hands clenched on her hips as she berated Sloan. She had a history of taking out her frustration in this way, and I could feel EJ tensing up beside me. Her sharp words cut through the hum of the market like a knife, and I stepped back to let EJ step between us.
My hand rested protectively on my growing belly, our unborn child stirring within me. We were headed to the hospital for another prenatal checkup before picking up some muffins for the baby shower. As Sami's voice grew louder, EJ shifted nervously beside me, his gaze flicking between Sami and myself.
EJ's hand gripped mine like he needed to hold me tight though his knuckles were white with tension. His gaze searched mine, silently imploring me to come up with a plan. Across the square, Sloan strode confidently towards us, an eager smirk playing on her lips that foreshadowed trouble. 
"Let's get the muffins and get out of here," EJ said hurriedly, as if that would save us from what we both knew was inevitable. Panic bubbled in my chest as all eyes followed Sloan's progress. 
"Forget it," I said with more conviction than I felt. "Let's just go." 
Too late; Sloan already stood before us, exhilaration shimmering in her eyes as she asked, in a voice loud enough for everyone to hear: "Sami, are you going to tell Nicole and EJ, or should I?"
My heart felt like a racehorse at the starting gate, wild with anticipation and fear. EJ stood next to me, his hand resting on my lower back, grounding me. We didn't hear Sloan's footsteps as she approached, but suddenly she was there, her eyes intent on mine. My confusion must have shown on my face because she spoke again. "The baby, Nicole. It's Eric's not EJ's." 
The words hit me like a sucker punch to the gut, all the air in my lungs evaporating like mist. For a moment, everything went black around the edges of my vision as I struggled to comprehend what she'd just said. Then everyone in the square seemed to gasp at once and start murmuring amongst themselves. A hot blush rose up my neck and suffused my cheeks with shame and disbelief; how could this be happening? EJ looked completely stunned too, his face pale and his eyes wide with shock. 
Sami glided across the square, her steps light as air. She threw EJ a triumphant smile, and a cruel laugh escaped her lips. Her voice was filled with malice as she snidely declared: "I told you, EJ. You can still escape this mess."
EJ's expression turned stony as he stepped towards her. His voice was taut with emotion as he dismissed Sami: "This isn't about you, Sami."
The other people in the square watched with rapt attention, their eyes shifting between EJ and Sami. As Sami made her exit, the alleyway seemed to hum with anticipation. The seed of doubt that had once been a mere niggling worry had now grown into a fully grown tree, its roots threatening to shatter our foundation. EJ's gaze met mine, his face etched with worry and concern. I saw the despair hovering over him like a fog – he could see it too, the path that had taken a detour from what we'd originally planned for our future. Our hospital visits for our weekly prenatal checkup were forgotten in the wake of Sloan's claim; everything felt uncertain and fragile. A hot blush rose up my neck and suffused my cheeks with shame and disbelief; how could this be happening? EJ looked completely stunned too, his face pale and his eyes wide with shock.

Author Note: So far I've been able to get 1 of my 10 chapters done everyday for fan fiction.net but I can't promise weekends. This is a 10 chapter story. I just wanted to fix the baby switch to be pro EJ and Nicole who I love which served as inspiration for this story.

The living room was cast in the faint hue of moonlight that crept through the half-drawn curtains. We sat huddled close together, our hands clasped tightly around a folded piece of paper. The stillness between us seemed to hum with anticipation as we waited for the moment when everything could change. I had never seen Nicole look so fragile, her eyes misting with worry as she glanced at me for reassurance. Clenching my jaw, I turned away and stared at the paternity test results in my hands.
Earlier as I'd watched my ex, Samantha, from across the room, her blue eyes burned with a hatred so intense it made me shudder. I had known she was vengeful, but this was something else entirely. I had even felt sorry for Sloan who had lost her baby and the world seemed to tumble around her, but my foremost concern lay with Nicole. She had been through enough already and deserved to have a happy, healthy pregnancy. I clenched my fists as if to anchor myself in this resolve; no matter what it took, she would get that chance.
I looked down at the crumpled paper Sloan had thrown in front of us on our way out of the cafe. The stark, black words on the page jumped out at me, describing every action she'd taken to alter the test results – a legal brief written in her own hand. My vision swam as I processed this damning confession; Sloan had stolen Nicole away from me. Refusing to accept my heart-wrenching reality, I wanted nothing more than to forget what I'd just read and carry on as if nothing had happened.
Nicole blinked rapidly, her lips parted and closing as if she wanted to say something but couldn't find the right words. My voice came out a hoarse whisper, "This can't be right..."
The silence that followed was deafening. Nicole's grip on my hand tightened until I could feel her fingernails biting into my skin. Eventually, she spoke in a trembling voice, teary-eyed and pained, "It... it might not be, EJ. We... we were set up."
I sat in silence as my mind reeled at the truth of her words. It felt like a physical blow, like someone had taken a baseball bat to the core of my being. I felt betrayed and used, like our most joyous day had been manipulated for someone else's gain. Tears began to form in my eyes as the realization sunk in that if we'd only known sooner, she'd be with Eric right now, that she'd have left me as fast as she had returned.
Nicole places the test result on the coffee table, her hand trembling. She turns to me, her eyes filled with a sorrow that mirrors my own, and whispers, "Even if it's true, EJ... even if the baby isn't biologically yours..."
I tried not to let my face give away the internal conflict I was feeling, though I don't know how successful I was. Her gaze felt like it was piercing through me as the seconds passed in silence. Then she sniffled and I watched her lips quiver as more tears began to fall. Her voice shook as she finally spoke, "I still want us. You, me... and our baby."
The sincerity of her plea made my heart sink, but for a moment hope fluttered within my chest.
Nicole's gaze bore into mine, tears pooling in her bright blue eyes as she opened her mouth to speak. But no words came out. Instead, I felt a wave of emotion pass between us as our fingers intertwined. Finally, I nodded and spoke softly. "I want us too, Nicole. We'll get through this."
We held each other in a tight embrace, the warmth of her body comforting against my own. My doubt about what was really being said between us lingered in the air as I closed my eyes in an attempt to just believe her. But I knew Nicole too well and she had learned early on how to tell someone what they wanted to hear to protect herself from harm. My chest clenched as I looked into her eyes and spoke truthfully. "Me too, Nicole. You're everything to me."
As I pulled my arms around her, I could feel the tightness in my chest and a familiar chill run through me. Though we had only been together for a short time, the memories of past love gone wrong overwhelmed me with doubts. Her smile was warm and inviting, but a small voice whispered in the back of my mind, "Is she really here to stay this time? Will things be different this time?" Our hearts were so close yet so far apart, but all I had left to do was wait and see.
Years ago, she thought Eric Brady was her soulmate; although back then I'd foolishly said the same about Sami. But now, with Nicole by my side, I'd felt more complete than ever before. Nicole brought out a warmth in me that had been kept dormant for far too long - a light that radiated from deep within and made me feel invincible. With each day spent side by side, it became more and more evident that being with Nicole made me a better person.
As we kissed, a warmth spread through my body. Her soft lips tasted of tea and honey, and I wanted to keep her close like I promised. I wanted to be the father to her child, but even if that wasn't possible, I knew I would always protect her with all the love in my heart.

With Nicole expecting our baby, drinking alone no longer held the same allure. A picture of my son Johnny sat on my desk, a reminder of a relationship I hoped I had left far behind me – me and his mother, Sami. I tried to banish thoughts of him from my mind for now and prayed he was happy, not burdened by the weight of worries like me. My reverie was interrupted by the soft creak of the front door being opened. Nicole stood there, her silhouette framed against the bright light.
The photo I'd picked up in my hands had her face on it, and she gasped when she saw it. Despite this, I tried to sound nonchalant as I said, "Just trying to remember the good old days and how similar our current situation is." Her expression of shock and hurt didn't change.
"With Sami." Nicole's face fell, and her eyes flashed with a mixture of hurt and anger. She spun around to go, but I didn't want this misunderstanding lingering between us. I stretched out my arm and wrapped my hand around hers, the tension between us crackling in the air.
Nicole remained silent, her gaze far away. I shifted in my seat, watching the play of emotions on her face—pain, regret, and a deep sorrow that seemed to echo my own. “Do you think we can ever really let go of our pasts?” I asked softly, hoping she would find it in herself to answer.
Nicole’s wry comment hung in the air between them like a heavy fog. I felt my body freeze and my heart race as I asked her what she meant. She let out a short, sad laugh that sounded more like a crack.
She looked away, a single tear tracing down her cheek as she spoke. "It means I have had bad luck with love," she said, her voice quivering slightly. "I moved in here after dumping one husband and thinking I was going to end up with another man – only to find myself back in your house because you were nice enough to put me up." At her words, I shifted uncomfortably in my seat, feeling an odd combination of shame and pride. "Please don't say that," I murmured, though I couldn't help but wonder why it mattered so much what she thought of me.
"Why not? You're kindest sets you apart from your family."
I sighed heavily. Other than my mother, Nicole would be the only person to ever have had said something like that. The Dimera last name was to be feared, but I didn't want everyone knowing how 'kind' I was; it made me feel vulnerable. "You make me sound safe," I said quietly.
"Is that crazy?"
My breath hitched in my throat at the unexpected question. I shook my head slowly. "No," I replied eventually. "But…you will never have another moment of pain that I cause."
She paused for a moment, before placing her hands gently over her swollen belly. She looked at me with a soft smile, one that seemed to convey an understanding between us without any further words being exchanged. "No matter what happens, this baby was always my top priority before anything else as well as Holly."
"Yes," I said hesitantly, "but you never answered when I asked if you had ever thought about me being in your plans forever when you first moved in."
Her lips twitched. "I'm attracted to you and I do love you," she admitted finally, and the silence that followed seemed to confirm it. Then she added quietly, "But our track record with Sami always gets in the way."
My heart sank as she spoke, not because of what she said but the way her eyes glimmered with unspoken sadness. I usually recognized it as a challenge, but this time I could tell Nicole was being honest. She truly loved Eric. I didn't need to take a closer look to notice the curve in her lips to see the truth.
The old me would have fought for her attention, but I've changed. Making sure Nicole was happy outweighed my own feelings.
Nicole pulled away from me, almost as if my touch had caused her pain. Her voice wavered as she asked hesitantly, "Are you saying you still have feelings for Sami, EJ?"
The suggestion to let her go felt like a knife stabbing at my heart. My mom had always said I must never force love, and I had to accept that Nicole had to choose me for herself. I couldn't look her in the eye; the truth was complicated. Sami was a part of my past, but Nicole was what I wanted my present and future to be. I had been battered and broken by a seemingly endless cycle of failed relationships before I stumbled into EJ's arms. I was determined not to cling this time, even though my heart ached. I took out a pen and paper quickly scribbled a note for Holly and for EJ saying that I would be back in the afternoon to get her. With one last lingering glance, I grabbed my car keys and drove off towards Paulina's office – the only hope for finding an affordable rental.

Before I even left the realtor office, my daughter Holly's anxiety was evident in her wide-eyed expression this morning. She must expect me to just run off with yet another man.

I had to be better for her and for myself.

Paulina hadn't been able to make it, but her assistant had printed out a list of potential venues with addresses for me to check out. Taking a deep breath, I stuffed the paper in my pocket and set off—not only would a walk do some good to clear my mind, but it was also beneficial for the baby on the way.

Without looking back, I continued on my apartment hunt.

Nicole's note fluttered from my hand as I read the words, “I’ll be back to Holly in a few hours once I find my own place.” A void opened up inside me, threatening to swallow me whole as I thought about what I'd done. Hidden amidst the towering trees of the park, I watched her solitary figure standing in front of a park bench. Her hands were clasped together and her head hung low while her long dark hair cascaded over her shoulders, disguising the constant tears that slid down her cheeks. The pain was etched deep in Nicole’s beautiful face and my heart ached for her.

The warm summer breeze carried the sound of her voice, carrying a quiet intensity that stopped me in my tracks. "I love EJ," she said, her gaze steady on Eric. "I want to be with him, not you."

I settled down on the bench in Horton Square, sipping a strawberry smoothie. However, it done nothing to settle my racing mind. I took out two rental contract offers and studied them carefully. The first was close to where EJ's brother lived, but further away from where I grew up; the second was closer to home, but had me worried about safety for Holly when she had to take the bus to school. Clenching my eyes shut, I signed the dotted line next to the option that was closer to home and cheaper.
I inhaled deeply, relishing the familiar scent of woody, floral Baccarat Rouge 540 cologne. When I opened my eyes, I saw his deep brown eyes staring back at me and a slow smile spread across my face. “EJ," I said softly. "I was just about to decide on this apartment, then sign the agreement before I pick up Holly."
He reached out and took my hands, the warmth of his skin radiating onto mine. But I pulled away, the hurt still fresh in my mind. "You love Sami," I said softly, "I don't understand why but I'm worth loving." He knelt down on one knee, and I saw a tear slip down his smooth cheek. His voice cracked as he spoke, "You are worth loving. And I lied earlier."
I felt my eyes widen with shock and disbelief. “You what?” I motioned for him to take the chair opposite me, which he did without resisting. When he finally spoke, his words cut through the air like a knife: “I thought you were still in love with Eric.”
Shifting uneasily in my seat, I tried to suppress a cringe, my hands moving protectively to rest on my pregnant belly as if that could fend off the harsh truth of his words. Taking a deep breath, I forced myself to look EJ directly in the eye and away from my unappealing smoothie. “No,” I said quietly, a sad realization settling upon me. “I wanted to be. I used to think that if he could love me then I was worthy of love.”
As EJ shifted in his seat, my knee grazed his and I felt a jolt of electricity. I looked at his eyes, which were seemingly searching mine for answers. With a deep breath, I spoke slowly and clearly--"I measured my own worth by how much I was loved by men, especially 'good' guys like Eric. I wanted him to think of me as one of the good ones."
His eyes widened in shock before his eyebrows furrowed together, disbelief dancing in his gold-flecked ember irises. “And you’re realizing it now?”
I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “I was projecting a picture I created for myself. Brandon sent me this app when I was pregnant to help with positive thinking and I did the exercises, but when I thought you loved Sami…”
“I do not,” he interrupted, speaking over me. “I thought I had to let you go to be happy.” A small laugh escaped my lips before I continued. “Same. When I saw Eric at the park the other day, I told him that I love you -”
My mouth hung open in surprise, but EJ didn't give me a chance to reply. He took my hand and spoke again. "I heard you, and I hope you can forgive me." Despite my lingering doubts, I felt a spark of joy ignite inside me. I couldn't help the wide smile that flashed across my face as I looked up at EJ. "Can we get an ice cream on our way home?"
He squinted, and the dim light of the clouds caught his face in a half-shadow. "Yes, if you can answer my question." I laid my palm against his cheek and felt the stubble of days without shaving. His lips trembled when I whispered, “Of course I love you and want to be with you.” A small smile broke through the veil of misunderstanding as he leaned in to kiss me. He pulled back with a sigh, “I love you too. Let's get you that ice cream.”
I struggled to my feet, muscles burning and heart racing. I glanced over at EJ, his face holding a look of concern and pity. “Cone,” I told him as I wobbled unsteadily. “Definitely want a cone, not that soft ice cream stuff but the real McCoy.” As he nodded, a small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth and for a moment all seemed right in the world again.

A beam of golden sunlight pierced through the living room window, bathing the entire space in a soft glow. I stood there, two blindfolds clasped between my fingers, and grinned mischievously as I shouted out to EJ, "Get ready for an adventure! I have something special planned." My heart raced with excitement, and I could barely contain my enthusiasm.
The sound of his footsteps echoed in the hallway as I led EJ forward, careful to keep him on track. We reached old Salem Inn, and I took a deep breath in anticipation as I grasped his hand, feeling its warmth against my own.
I guided him into the elevator, but neither of us spoke until it had closed firmly behind us. My heart thumped with excitement as I slowly drew off his blindfold and watched his face change from confusion to recognition. His eyes lit up with nostalgia as he looked around the tiny space, and he whispered softly, "An elevator... just like our first time."

We swayed side to side, our bodies playing along with the thumping rhythm of the music. His gaze met mine, and I felt a genuine smile begin to cross my face. My voice was barely audible over the beat, but I managed to get the words out: “EJ, no matter what the DNA test results say, I love you. I want a life with you and our baby.”
His eyes softened and he tugged me closer, our hearts beating in sync. The thrum of the music was barely audible as we stayed in that embrace, held in each other’s gaze. The next morning, my stomach grumbled loudly as I trudged down the stairs and into the kitchen. The aroma of buttered toast and scrambled eggs made my mouth water and I quickened my pace.

EJ arrived with a steaming cup of coffee and I heaped my plate high with pancakes, waffles, bacon, and eggs. I had just taken the last bite when the doorbell rang. I laid my napkin on the table and followed EJ as he made his way to the foyer.

I sank to the couch, feeling every tug and ache in my feet. I cradled my belly protectively and held my breath as I heard a chorus of voices in the next room. My heart dropped when EJ returned with a concerned look on his face. "We have visitors," he said quietly.

I wrinkled my nose and shuddered, the memory of the last devastating truth still ringing in my ears. "No way," I said, shaking my head. "I'm not ready to face Eric, Sloan or Dr Kayla right now. My headache hasn't gone away from the last time I heard."

EJ sat down beside me on the couch, his hand warm in mine. The look of determination on his face softened as he glanced at the four people standing before us. He squeezed my hand and said, "This time there is Talia Hunter. From their faces though, I think we should hear them

Right at least we were facing this together. I gave his hand a reassuring squeeze and said, “Okay, what new calamity are we facing?” Eric strode back and forth across the room, running his hands through wild brown hair, Sloan stood with her arms crossed firmly over her chest, Talia had her head in her hands allowing her long dark curls to fall forward like a curtain. Kayla sat next to EJ on the edge of the couch, resting one hand on his shoulder as she spoke over him. “Nicole, it seems the hospital had a major security breach.”

My jaw dropped and my heart raced. Dr. Kayla, her face suddenly serious, glanced at Talia before turning back to me. "Our computer systems were hacked," she said. "Every time either your name or EJ's name were entered into our genetic database, it would automatically display the incorrect paternity test results." Her voice was tight with tension. "Which means that we are not sure that Eric is actually the father."

My thoughts whirled around my mind like a tornado. Could it be true? I'd spent so many hours with EJ, back when I'd tried to switch the babies out of sheer terror of losing him. Sloan had put up a fight, but in the end had given up. My throat felt tight as I choked out the words, “Who? What?” At the same time, EJ asked his own question, “How do you know?”

Talia shifted her weight from one foot to the other as she spoke, her voice trembling. "I explained to Colin how genetic tests appear in medical records and he knew that his sister would do whatever it took to get access". I ran my fingers through my hair in frustration. Sloan then added, "When Talia mentioned having IT check for a breach, their findings matched exactly what she said."

My heart sank. My head spinning, I stared at Eric in disbelief. "So what are you saying?" I asked weakly.

"That we don't know who the father is Nicole," he replied slowly.

I put my hand to my stomach, tears welling up in my eyes as I contemplated the future implications of this news for my unborn child. My voice broke as I repeated, "Seriously?"

EJ touched my shoulder lightly, his breath warm on my neck. His eyes crinkling with concern as he whispered, "Nicole, if you don't want to do this, we don't have to."

I put my hand over his and looked into his eyes. I thought of all the secrets that hung heavy in the air here in Salem. We were surrounded by lies, but I wanted our peace of mind more than anything else. With a conviction that caught us both off guard, I said firmly, "We do. We all deserve to have peace of mind."

He nodded slowly and then spoke in a tight, controlled voice. "I'd like to do a double test. One from Dr. Kayla and one from my private lab."

Eric's face reddened as he accused, "So you can challenge the results?"

EJ met his gaze steadily as he replied, "I need to be entirely sure that there is no further subterfuge."

The tension in the air was palpable but I could tell they both wanted the same thing - assurance.
