THE LAKE HOUSE

Philip is talking to Lucas on his cell phone.
Philip: You okay?
Lucas: I’m sort of numb. How about you?
Philip: I don’t know. It doesn’t seem real.
Lucas: If you had watched the executions, it would seem real.
Philip: Listen, Chloe just walked in. Can I call you later?
Lucas: Sure. Whenever.
They hang up.

Philip opens the door that leads from the garage into the house and Chloe walks in.
Philip: Wes is awake if you want to see him.
Chloe: Okay.
Philip: So, it’s over. They’re dead.
Chloe: Yes.
Philip: Were there a lot of people watching?
Chloe: Yes, but I wasn’t one of them.
Philip: Why not?
Chloe: Well, I went there with every intention of watching them get what they deserve, but I realized two things.
Philip: And they were …
Chloe: First of all, I didn’t really think that seeing them die would bring me any more closure than just knowing they had died. I really didn’t want to have nightmares about them for the rest of my life.
Philip: I know exactly what you mean.
Chloe: The other reason had to do with you.
Philip: Me?
Chloe: I didn’t want you to look at me for the rest of your life and think that I got some kind of pleasure out of watching your parents die. I didn’t want that to be something that would come between us.
Philip: Are you saying what I think you’re saying?
Chloe: Philip, when I was in Thailand, the only thing that got me through that ordeal was thinking about you and Wesley. Mostly about you. And how grateful I was that you gave me that stupid Swiss Army knife. You saved my life by giving me that thing. [She wipes the tears from her eyes.] I realized I have about a million memories of you and me, Philip, and I wouldn’t change any of them. I mean, we’ve known each other so long that I can hardly remember a time when you weren’t in my life and ...  and something you said last week keeps going through my mind over and over again.
Philip: What did I say?
Chloe: You said you can do a lot of things, but you can’t live without me. Well, it’s the same for me. I learned that I could do a lot of things that I didn’t know I was capable of doing, but the one thing I can’t do is … I can’t live without you either, Philip.
Philip sighs.
Philip: Come here.
Chloe walks into Philip’s arms and holds him tight.
Chloe: I know today is an awful day for you.
Philip: It just got a lot better. I love you so much.
Chloe: I love you too.
They kiss.
Chloe: Let’s go sit on the veranda. Just to feel normal.
Philip nods as he and Chloe walk out on the veranda with their arms around each other.
Philip: “So Philip, what did you do today? Oh not much. I tried to put my parents’ execution out of my mind, so I sat on the veranda.”
Chloe: Are you mocking me?
Philip: Now that’s something that would make me feel normal.

Love the ending. Loved Chloe asking Philip if he was mocking her and Philip saying now that is something that would make me feel normal. So funny that now she thanks Philip for the stupid Swiss army knife. Thanks for this amazing story Kpatch

Hey everyone! Thanks so much for reading Frantic (Part 7 of the Trilogy) and for your great comments. I always say your comments are chicken soup for the author’s soul and it’s what keeps me motivated to keep writing.

It was a real journey, this one. From Salem to Thailand and back again, with a side trip to the electric chair (sorry DJM, I know you were hoping for lethal injection). My favorite chapter was the shirtless one. Thanks to all those who suggested it!

I wrote this story last summer, when the on-air show was victimizing women and turned Chloe into a hooker. That’s why it was really important to me for Chloe to save herself. I wanted her to show herself and others that she is strong and resourceful and doesn’t need to wait for a man to save her.

I admit I was concerned about how you would react to Victor and Kate’s execution and was very relieved when you all seemed to approve of it.

So what’s next? Well, you know there’s more to this saga, a couple more parts at least. Starting tomorrow, I’m off on a long weekend. A new story will start Monday and you get to decide whether it will be the continuation of this saga, or a different story entirely. Look for the poll going up tomorrow (Thursday).
