Chapter 10
THE CONDO
Philip took his overnight case into the bedroom and he put his briefcase in his study. He saw the old photos lying on his desk. He picked them up and went into Parker’s room.
Philip: Chloe? What were these pictures doing out on my desk?
Chloe looked at Philip.
Parker: Uh oh. Busted!
Chloe: Oh crap. Um.
Philip: Why were they on my desk?
Chloe: Why were they in your drawer?
Parker: Nice deflection, Mom.
Philip: What do you mean?
Parker: Pass interference.
Chloe: I mean, what do you do with them? Pull them out to look at because you miss those women so much?
Parker: She shoots and she scores!
Philip: What? Why are you angry?
Parker: A swing and a miss.
Chloe: Why don’t you answer me, Philip? Those women aren’t in your life anymore. Do you wish they were?
Parker: Flag on the play. Unnecessary roughness.
Philip: Where’s Chloe and what have you done with her?
Chloe: Stop avoiding the question!
Parker: Strike three.
Philip: You want to know why I have these pictures in a desk drawer? Fine, I’ll tell you.

THE CONDO
Chloe: Stop avoiding the question!
Philip: You want to know why I have these pictures in a desk drawer? Fine, I’ll tell you. You’re right. I do look at these pictures every so often. The reason I keep them around is so I don’t forget how badly I messed up in the past, what I did wrong. I don’t want to make the same mistakes with you.
Chloe was quiet for a moment.
Chloe: Really? Is that true?
He touched her cheek.
Philip: Yes, it’s the truth. The most important relationship I’ve ever had is the one I have with you, and I don’t want to screw it up. I can’t screw it up.
Chloe: Then why ...
Philip: Why ... what?
Chloe: Why ...
Chloe’s voice practically turned into a whisper and she cast her eyes toward the floor.
Chloe: Why don’t you have any pictures of me on your desk? And ... why am I the only woman you’ve never proposed to?
Philip laughed.
Philip: You’re joking, right?
Chloe looked at Philip and shook her head no.
Philip: Wow.
Philip rubbed his face roughly and he felt himself getting angry. He took his iPhone out of his pocket and scrolled to his pictures.
Philip: You don’t think I have pictures of you? Look at this. [He showed her his iPhone screen.] These pictures are with me all the time. Picture after picture after picture of you. Of Parker. You again. You and Parker. Oh, wait.
He reached inside the collar of his shirt and pulled out the chain around his neck.
Philip: I stopped wearing my dog tags until you engraved one of them with the words “I love you Philip.” Now I wear this next to my heart all the time. Because that’s where I keep you.
Chloe: Philip ....
Philip: And I guess your memory isn’t very good, because I can remember telling you I wanted to marry you at least a dozen times. Let’s see. There was the time we were on your parents’ porch, then there was the time we were outside the Dimera mansion, then there was the day we graduated from high school and, I think, a few times while you were undergoing cancer treatments. A guy can get a little tired of being rejected. Is any of this ringing a bell yet? Because now I have a question for you. Why am I the only man you’ve never said “yes” to?
Philip looked at her and waited for a response but Chloe was too stunned to answer. Philip turned and stormed off to his study.

Thanks for posting 2 chapters today Kpatch. I liked Philips answer to Chloe regarding the pictures. I love that he wears the engraved dog tag next to his heart. I don't think Chloe ever took those moments seriously when he would talk about marriage. They were so young and the intensity of Philip's feelings was so overwhelming for her back then. I'm eager to hear Chloe's response to Philip's question.
