ONE SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT THE CONDO, TWO MONTHS EARLIER
Philip and Parker were watching football on TV. Philip: Yes! Touchdown Bears! Gimme a high five, big guy. Philip high fived Parker’s little hand. Parker: Bears? This doesn’t look like the three little bears. Or patty cake. Dad can be so weird sometimes. Philip: Hey, let’s go tell your Mom what’s going on in the game. Parker pointed to the TV screen. Parker: Wait, it’s my favorite commercial. The talking e-Trade baby. Philip carried Parker into the kitchen. Philip: Bears are ahead 26 to 17 and they’re about to kick the extra point. Chloe: What period? Philip: Quarter. Fourth quarter with less than 5 minutes left. ... What are you cooking? Chloe: Applesauce. Philip: Applesauce? Chloe: I was watching Dr. Oz and ... Philip: Oh, your guru. Chloe: And he said that you’re so much better off making your baby’s food yourself than buying that jarred stuff. The recipe sounded really easy, so I figured I’d try it. Philip: Hmm. I’m impressed. It smells good. Smells like apple pie. Chloe: Here, you can be my taste-tester. Chloe scooped a little applesauce with her forefinger and held it up to Philip’s mouth. He took her finger into his mouth and tasted the applesauce. They were both a little surprised by the unexpected sensuality of that action. Chloe: Um ... like it? Philip: Yeah. A lot. Parker: Hey, what about me? Chloe: Let’s see if Parker likes it. Chloe put a little sauce on a spoon and fed it to Parker, who was still in Philip’s arms. He made a funny face as if he was about to spit it out. Then he broke into a little laugh. Philip and Chloe laughed too. Philip: He likes it. Chloe: That makes his mommy very happy. Philip: Ready to watch the rest of the game, big guy? Parker: I’d rather stay in here with the food and the pretty girls. Philip: Join us? Chloe: I’d love to. I’ll be there in a minute.

Cute scene, but is it a little Oedipal that Parker thinks his mom is a "pretty girl?"

Great chapter Kpatch. I get the feeling the applesauce wasn't the only thing Philip liked. Parker is funny.

Wait, Chloe's not a bumbling idiot in the kitchen? Oh, that's right, it's jkjpatch's writing. Love it!

CONDO, THAT NIGHT
After tucking Parker in, Philip and Chloe headed for the living room.
Philip: Nightcap? Chloe: Sure, if you’re pouring. Philip handed Chloe a drink and poured one for himself. Philip: Let’s sit out on the terrace. Philip held the terrace door open as he and Chloe walked out, then they sat on the balcony overlooking Lake Michigan and the city lights. The autumn night was unseasonably warm. Even though it was late, the terrace was illuminated by the harvest moon and a million stars that dotted the Chicago night sky.
Philip: You doing okay? Chloe: Me? Sure, why? Philip: No reason. It’s just that we haven’t really had a serious talk in a long time. I just wanted to know if ... if you’re happy. Chloe smiled. Chloe: You’re sweet. Yes, I’m happy. I have everything I want. I have my son. Philip looked down at his drink and swirled it in his glass. Philip: Is that enough for you? Chloe: It’s everything to me. What are you getting at? Philip: I don’t know. Don’t you ever ... want more? Chloe: Like what? Philip: Like ... love, marriage ... the whole picture. Chloe: Oh that. No, I gave up on thinking there’s such a thing as having it all. Philip: Really? Chloe: Really. I’m 28 years old, I’ve been married three times, and they all ended in disaster. Philip: So ... what are you saying? You’ll never love again? Chloe: Oh, I don’t know. Maybe. But if I don’t, that’s okay too. Philip: You mean you’d be okay if you never had love in your life again? Chloe: Oh Jerry, don’t let’s ask for the moon. We have the stars. Philip laughed. Philip: What??? Who’s Jerry? Chloe: Sorry. It’s the closing line from "Now Voyager," the Bette Davis tearjerker. Philip: Uh-huh. Chloe: Don’t make fun of me. It’s a classic. It’s about this couple that used to be in love and now they’re raising a child together, and she’s happy with the status quo, but he wants a romantic relationship with her. Philip [sarcastically]: Wow, that’s really far-fetched. Chloe looked at Philip and laughed. Chloe: Why? What do you want? Philip thought for a minute before answering. Philip: The moon. I want the moon.
