Mary would be handy, but George is my favorite....everyone needs a George in their life!

I was afraid that I had crossed stories. I just love George to death, but I really like Mary and her no nonsense ways with both Philip and Chloe.
I hope that Parker has someone that he can confide in in this story. That little guy needs to get his feelings out.

Poor Parker. He's been through a lot of trauma.

Chapter 3a
After dropping Parker off at school, Chloe parked her car in the carport under the house, which was built on stilts in case of flooding. She was focused on her phone as she headed up the stairs toward the front door, while fishing for her house key, when a man standing at the door startled her.
“Hey,” the man said.
Her eyes widened. “Brady! What on earth are you doing here?”
“Is that how you greet an old friend?”
She smiled. He took a few steps toward her and gave her a hug. “Sorry, you surprised me. And you’re more than just an old friend,” she said, hugging him back. Taking a step back, her brow furrowed. “Still wondering what you’re doing here.”
“Invite me in and I’ll explain.” Chloe turned the key in the lock. As they entered the house, Brady said, “Where is everyone? Where’s Parker and Philip?”
“I just dropped Parker off at school.”
“School? Really?”
“Ya. First grade. He started a couple weeks ago.”
Brady eyed her skeptically. “Why do you have that look on your face?”
“I have a look?”
“You look unhappy. Doesn’t Parker like school?”
“I’m not unhappy,” Chloe replied honestly. “Parker likes school. A lot, really. But he gets this separation anxiety every day when I drop him off. He clings to my leg and it’s just so hard not to be emotional about it, especially after everything he’s been through lately.”
“That doesn’t sound good.”
“It’s not. I feel like I should get him help, but I don’t know where to start.” Her voice cracked with emotion. “And that makes me feel like I’m a bad mother.”
“You’re not a bad mother, Chloe.”
“Maybe not, but I’m a fish out of water down here in this godforesaken wilderness.” She absentmindedly checked her phone. “Marathon Key is small strip of land and it’s not like New York where there’s a therapist on every corner, and every one of them is considered tops in their field, you know?”
“Sorry to hear that. Maybe you should go back to New York.”
“What? No.” She set her phone on the counter. “This is our home now.”
“You sure? Because it sounds to me like Parker’s not the only one who’s discontented,” Brady observed.
“Who? Me? No, I’m perfectly fine. I didn’t mean to sound so dramatic.”
“Chloe.” Brady approached and took her hands. “Almost no one knows you better than me. You’re miserable. It’s written all over your face. So, talk to me.”

Nice that Brady came to see Chloe. Interesting that he thinks she’s miserable.

Hmmm, I wonder if Chloe really is miserable and why did Brady just suddenly pop by?

I wonder would Philip be opposed to living in New York? And honestly maybe she should look up a therapist locally before she judges Small towns don’t always mean less qualified It depends really Try a session and then make a choice I think ya more than the small town bothering her though

A. Go away, Brady. B. Seriously, dude? You startle someone with Chloe’s background? What kind of monster (or dingbat) are you? Or what if she’s started carrying after all of this and pulls a revolver out of her purse and shoots you? C. Go away, Brady.

I didn't think Chloe would be happy living in a small town atmosphere. She's always been one to reach for bigger and better. I don't think she's really given the place a chance. Sounds like she likes the conveniences that a larger town has to offer. Small towns don't necessarily mean inferior. It might take a little more work, but there are good ones there too even if their methods are straight by the book. Her description of the place says a lot too.

Chloe is clearly unhappy. But she also needs to think about Parker. What's best for both of them?

Chapter 3b
“It sounds to me like Parker’s not the only one who’s discontented,” Brady observed.
“Who? Me? No, I’m perfectly fine. I didn’t mean to sound so dramatic.”
“Chloe.” Brady approached and took her hands. “Almost no one knows you better than me. You’re miserable. It’s written all over your face. So, talk to me.”
Chloe sighed. She backed away from Brady and walked toward the sliding doors. Looking out at the expanse of water, she choked back tears. “This is hard. Don’t get me wrong. I love Philip. So much. I enjoy living with him and the three of us becoming a family. It’s a dream come true. I just …” She turned around and faced Brady. “I’m not miserable. I just haven’t settled in yet. You know me, I’m more of a city girl than a beach baby.” She squeezed her eyes shut. “It’s just… I’m kind of going stir crazy.”
Brady laughed as he took a seat on a kitchen stool. “Have you told Philip?”
“No. You know how sensitive he is. If I tell him I’m not happy here, he’ll take it personally.”
“Chloe, you should tell him. You’re not doing either one of you any favors by keeping it to yourself. Eventually, you’ll wind up resenting him for making you live here.”
“He’s not making me do anything," she snapped. "It’s my choice. And really, this is on me. It’s just different here, that’s all. Quiet. Deafeningly quiet. Water to the left. Water to the right. Intercoastal. Ocean. It’s all the same to me. No restaurants, unless you like crab shacks. No entertainment, unless you’re into dolphin research. No culture to speak of.”
“Okay, so it’s not New York,” Brady observed.
“It’s not even Salem.” She waved at the air. “I’m making a much bigger deal of this than it deserves. I just need to adjust, that’s all.”
“And if you don’t?”

I would think by now Chloe would know that keeping secrets is a bad idea. I hope she tells Philip.
