Chapter 2a
Philip dressed and came downstairs the next morning. Chloe was sitting on a kitchen stool talking on her phone while Parker was sitting on the floor in the living room playing with an interactive learning toy. “Hey big guy,” Philip greeted Parker. Parker looked up and gave Philip a big grin. “Did you eat breakfast?” Parker nodded and returned to his activity.
Chloe pushed her hair back and sighed deeply. “I miss her so much already. … Yes, Mom, I know you told me this would happen. You were right. Are you happy? Because I’m miserable. … No, no, I know she’s where she belongs and she’s safe, thank God. That doesn’t stop me from missing her though. … Yeah, I guess we’ll visit them. … What? You want … to come here to visit? Um.” Chloe glanced in Philip’s direction. “I guess, but not right away, okay? We need a little time to adjust to the new normal. Okay, I love you too. Yes, I promise to call. I will.”
Chloe ended her call and said to Philip, “We tried not to wake you. I know you didn’t get a great night’s sleep and you really needed your rest.”
“You didn’t wake me.”
She stood and approached Philip. Touching his hair, she asked, “How’s your head?”
He clasped her hand and kissed it. “I feel fine. Did I … Did I hear you say your mother wants to visit?”
“Um. Yeah.” She dropped Philip's hand. "She wants to see with her own two eyes that we’re okay.”
There was silence for several moments.
“If you don’t want my mother here, I completely understand,” Chloe added. “I can take Parker and we can go see my parents in New York instead.”
Philip stared at a spot on the wall behind Chloe.
“How long will you be gone,” Philip asked as he handed Chloe her suitcase.
“Two weeks at the most.” She kissed Philip’s cheek. “Say goodbye to Uncle Philip, Parker.” Parker waved at Philip. Philip reached for Parker to give him a hug, but he was gone. They both were.
Two weeks later, he stood outside the front door and held his phone to his ear. “Two more weeks? Really?”
“I’m sorry, Philip. There’s just a lot going on here with my parents and it’s not a good time to leave them. I’ll call you, okay?”
Another two weeks went by and Philip paced the living room waiting for Chloe to answer the phone. When she finally did, he said, “Where are you? I thought you said you’d be back by today.”
“I know. I did say that, and I’m sorry, but Parker just loves his new school and I don’t have the heart to pull him out.”
“There are good schools here, Chloe.”
“Of course there are. But this is New York. There’s no place else on earth quite like New York.”
“Are you … are you ever coming back to Florida?”
“Probably not. But I’ll call you, okay?” Before Philip could say another word, the line went dead.

I’m sure Philip isn’t terribly excited about seeing Nancy in general, whether it’s here or there.

Oh yikes...........is he going to let Nancy come visit out of desperation/fear? Don’t do it, Philip!

Philip distrusting Chloe to this extent is not a good sign for their relationship. They JUST recommitted to each other and he's already having doubts.

That would be Philip's greatest fear.
I think he will go along with Nancy coming to Florida for a visit.

Chapter 2b
“If you don’t want my mother here, I completely understand,” Chloe added. “We can go see my parents in New York instead.”
Philip shook himself out of his reverie. He was a little disgusted with himself for still being so insecure after all these years. But really, who could blame him? He was rebuffed by Chloe on several occasions. Belle cheated on him. Melanie flirted with another man. Stephanie became unhinged after being kidnapped. Maybe he should have stuck it out with Morgan. Except he didn’t love Morgan. He loved Chloe.
“No,” he said, returning to the present. “I don’t want you to go.” When he realized how possessive that sounded, he softened. “You just got here and I like having you around.”
Chloe reached for Philip’s hand. “I like it here too, but honey, we would just go for a visit, not to stay. Our place is here with you now.”
He let out a sigh. His fears were unfounded. “That’s good to know.” He forced a smile. “Your mom is always welcome here.”
“Really? You two don’t have the best history.”
“Ancient history,” he said quickly. “She’s your mother and Parker’s grandmother. She’s welcome to visit. End of conversation.”
“Okay. I’ll tell her, I guess. As long as you’re sure.”
“I am. So, what did you want to do today?”
Chloe looked at her phone. “I was actually doing some online research earlier. I want to figure out where to enroll Parker in school.”
Philip’s eyes sparkled. That meant she really did plan to stay. New York wasn’t the only place on earth with decent schools. “It’s a small island. There’s not a ton of choices, but Marathon Key is considered upscale. The schools are supposed to be decent, at least that’s what I’ve heard.”
“They get good reviews and ratings,” Chloe said, holding up her phone.
“I can drive you. They’re all in the same general location.”
“That would be so great. Let me jump in the shower first.”
Philip grabbed Chloe’s arm. “Hey. Good morning.”
Chloe smiled and softly kissed Philip’s lips. “Good morning yourself.”
She started for the stairs, and turned around. “Um. Philip. Yesterday, when you proposed, um. I’m not gonna hold you to it or anything. Yesterday was a wild and crazy day. We almost got blown up. You hit your head and almost drowned, and—”
“And?”
“And you go through a lot of emotions when you have a near-death experience,” Chloe rationalized. “Sometimes people say things they wouldn’t say under other circumstances.”
Philip squinted at her. “Don’t you think I meant it?”

I think Philip meant the proposal and he is of course gonna stick to it...but I wonder if Chloe will stick to her decision of actually accepting his proposal or will she back out of it now? Either way with Philip and Chloe being engaged, I wonder how Nancy will react when she finds this out? I mean Nancy isn't exactly Philip's biggest fan and neither is Chloe's father Craig for that matter. Then there's still the issue of Philip's parents, Kate and Victor. I mean Philip's step-mother Maggie I am sure she will be happy for Philip and Chloe considering Parker is her grandson.

I think that Philip and Chloe better take this slow. All this insecurity will kill their relationship if they aren't careful.

I’m pretty sure Philip meant the proposal, but I also think they need to slow down since they’re literally just now getting back together.

I liked Chloe realizing Philip may have rushed to propose after almost dying. I think she wants him to know it's okay to slow down a little bit.
I have mixed feelings about Nancy visiting. It will undoubtedly be interesting.

It's obvious that these two have so many doubts about the other one. They need to really slow it down, think this through and take their time before making major decisions. Their decisions affect more than just them now. There's little Parker to think about too. If they are both serious about this, they HAVE to be come a stable couple - which is not in their history at all.

I think Chloe is the one who “didn’t mean it”

Oh sheesh. These two. Philip is now going to overthink everything (as he does) and decide that Chloe doesn’t want to marry him...then he’s going to get all upset. Chloe’s just trying to cut the guy some slack...

Chapter 2c
“Um.
“I think you meant it in the moment, but…”
He knit his brow. “So, when you said yes, was it just in the moment?”
“No, no, of course not.” She took a step closer. “I just don’t want you to feel obligated or anything. I mean, it’s so soon.”
“So soon?? I know I wasn’t the greatest math student, but I can add. And by my calculation, it’s been sixteen years. That doesn’t seem so soon to me.” A knot tightened in Philip’s stomach and he felt a rejection coming on. So he did what his Marines training would tell him to do—strike preemptively. “But if you’re not ready, I’m not going to push you. That strategy backfired years ago.” He forced a smile. “The proposal is retracted.”
Chloe’s lips parted. “Philip, I didn’t mean—”
He grasped her hands and brought her knuckles to his lips. “We’ll revisit this when the time is right. And when that happens—”
“It will happen,” Chloe said warmly.
“Next time there’ll be music and roses and champagne, because you deserve it. And it won’t be so spontaneous.” Philip left Chloe’s side and poured himself a cup of coffee.
“Honestly, I had no problem with the way you proposed." Chloe replied. “Spontaneity can be nice.” When Philip didn’t reply, she figured he was lost in thought. “Um. Okay, I’m gonna go take that shower.”
