chapter 72

The paramedics revived Jack and as the chopper landed Sara could see the medical team waiting on the ground. Jack's eyes were half opened but never leaving Sara. They got him off the chopper and headed towards the elevator. Once inside.. Sara leaned down to Jack, she had never let go of his hand, " Stay with me Jack..you hear me..stay with me." Jack's breathing was labored, "Promise me..you will move on if I don't.." Sara stopped him, " No..I will not do this.." Jack squeezed her hand, " Sara.." She shook her head quickly, " No I am not going to make a promise to you that we both know I will never keep." Jack squeezed his eyes closed and nodded slightly. " You are not going to get away from me that easily." Jack sucked in air, " I never want to get away from you." The doors opened and they all piled out and they rushed Jack into a trauma room, " I am sorry Mrs Deveraux, you need to wait outside." The Doctor said. She kissed him, " I love you..I will be waiting right outside ." Jack pulled her back, " I love you ..always.."

Sara stood outside the room waiting as they started arriving. First to get there was Steve , Ben and Robbie. " Mom..mom how is he?" She placed her hand on her son's face.Then looked at Steve, "They are working on him now..he coded on the way here." Steve closed his eyes hearing those words. " Robbie..we need to get Abigail over here." Robbie told her that Dean went to get her. Angela came in with Katie who stayed back away from the others. Robbie walked over to her, " Oh Robbie..I..I am so sorry. I will understand completely if you want me to leave." Robbie hugged her, " You have nothing to be sorry about. I am glad you here with me." Sara paced and Steve watched her. He could see her face was wet from crying but she was calm..almost emotionless. Robbie walked over to him and whispered, " She is in shut down mode. She bottles everything up inside. Eventually she will have a meltdown, we need to keep an eye on her." Steve nodded and walked in front of her. " Jack is tough..plus he has a lot to live for." Sara hugged him , but said nothing. Angela came over to her and hugged her. " Hoe are you holdin up?" Sara looked her in the eye. " I have to be strong..for him. I would kill for a cup of coffee though. " Angela kissed her on the head, " You got it." and she went o get a cup for her. The doctor finally came out and told them that they slowed the bleeding but the bullet nicked Jack's heart. He needed emergency surgery and a transfusion as he had lost a tremendous amount of blood. " Mrs Deveraux I have to tell you that in his current condition ..he might not make it through the surgery." Sara's breath caught , she nodded and turned away. They brought Jack out into the hallway to bring him up to surgery. Sara walked over to him and brushed his hair out of his eyes. " Hey.." She kissed him softly and whispered to him, " You owe me a honeymoon..and I intend on collecting." Jack rubbed the back of his hand over her cheek, " I have always loved you..I never stopped and I never will." He said softly. The doctor asked Sara to sign the consent forms and she looked back to Jack. " Don't go away I 'll be right back." Jack smiled weakly, " I will be here.". Robbie came over and took Jack's hand. " You hang on Dad..I just got you back.." Jack frowned, " I am very proud to be your father. I love you. Don't let her close herself off..ok?" Jack turned his head and saw his brother and extended his hand to him.Steve took it and came to his side, " Last time I was the one in the bed." Steve said to him. " Thank you for keeping them safe. Steve.." Steve cut him off, " I know Jack..me too." Jack shook his head , " No..last time I was too afraid to say it. I am not afraid anymore. I love you..and well..you are a great big brother. " The tears welled in Steve's eyes, " I love you too Happy Jack Billy Jack Deveraux Johnson." That made Jack smile. Then he asked Robbie to bring Ben over to him, Ben stood next to him and Jack spoke softly, " Take care of her for me..should anything happen. You will won't you. " Ben took a deep breath, " Jack..don't ..." Jack swallowed struggling to breath, " Say it..say you will take care of her." Ben nodded, " I will." Jack closed his eyes and he relaxed "Robert..Jack is going to need you..and Abigail " Sara walked back over, and took his hand again, " Did you miss me? " Jack took a short breath, " I always miss you when you aren't near me. Sara..in my jacket pocket..the disk..I found it..give it to Ben. " Sara gasped. She wanted to know how he had come into possession of it, but only said that she would make sure he got it. They wheeled him to the elevator, " Kiss me Sara..one more time." The tears poured from her eyes, She kissed with all that she had, " I will be waiting for you.. You come back to me Jack..remember..happily ever after." Then they took him away.

About twenty minutes after Jack went into surgery Dean came in with Abigail. They told them both that Jack was in surgery. Abigail began to cry and Robbie held her. Sara walked down the hall away from them all and sat on the floor. Abigail then went to Steve "It's all right Baby..everything is going to be alright " he told her. Robbie went and sat next to his mother. Neither looked at the other but Robbie held out his hand and she took it. He wrapped his arm around hers and she rested her head on his shoulder. The sat like that without speaking, Robbie knew that was what she needed.


Jack was in surgery and the bleeding would not stop. " We have to find the other hole." The surgeon said. Jack' s breathing slowed and his heart rate fell. " We are losing him !" the surgeon said. Jack found himself standing in the corner of the room watching them work on him. He heard a voice behind him...a voice he had not heard in quite sometime. "Hello Jack.." He turned to see her there just as he had remebered her. " Isabella.."

" I have missed you." He said. Isabella gave him a big bright smile, just as Jack knew she would. " I have missed you too." Jack frowned , " Am i dead..is that what this is about? " Isabella stared at her friend, " No Jack..you aren't dead..yet" Jack stepped closer to her and she hugged him. " I don't understand ..If i am not dead..then why are you here? " She whispered into his ear, " To wait with you."

" I don't understand." Jack said. Isabella took his hand. " I am here to wait with you while your fate is decided. Come.. walk with me Jack." He took her hand and they found themselves in the hallway standing next to Sara and Robbie. " Your new wife. That is your son..he has to be..he is the spitting image of you. Tell me about them Jack." Jack crouched down next her , he leaned in and breathed in her scent. " Where do you want me to begin?" Isabella watched him as he closed his eyes and his face filled with longing. " At the beginning of course."

Oh man... what a wonderful chapter. I wonder why Isabella is the one to wait with Jack. Anyway... wonder if Abby will think to call her mom and let her know? I know she and Jack are no longer a couple, but I think she would want to be there to support her daughter.

chapter 73

Jack told Isabella all about Sara and their past. Then jack told her about Robert and what he went through and how they just got him back. Jack turned and looked at Isabella. "Tell me about the others here..I see Steve there. I know that things have been better for the two of you." She could see Jack did not want to leave Sara's side, " It's ok Jack , we will come back to her..I promise." Jack nodded and they were standing by Steve. He was talking on his cell to Adrienne. " No..baby girl nothing yet...Ok..when do you arrive?...Well you let me know...Me?...I just..this isn't right...we finally got our family together..Jack and me..we're good...he's finally happy..I know..I just don't want to lose him again." Jack sighed. " I am glad you and Steve have built a relationship." Jack was staring at his brother, " Me too..he has really been there for me this past year. We have been spending a lot of time together." Isabella walked over to Dean and Angela, " And these are? " Jack came to her side and he saw the tear stained face of Angela and the worried look on Dean's. " These are our friends. Our very best friends. We all went to college together. It has been wonderful having them back in my life. I am grateful that they will always be there for Sara and Robert." Isabella walked over to Ben. " Who is this?" Jack chuckled, " That's agent Benjamin Todd...he is in love with my wife. They had been involved but Sara never fully committed to him. I guess he feels I took the life he should have..with her..and my son. He will take care of her....Oh..this is Abigail." Isabella smiled, " She is a beautiful young woman Jack." Jack beamed with pride. " Yes..like her mother. She has many of the traits that both Jennifer and I posses...good and bad. Out of my three children I think she is the one who combines both myself and her mother the most. Robert is very much like Sara..as I was not around when he was growing up. He does have some of my traits and mannerisms but he is mostly Sara. Jennifer and I have a son also. Jack Jr. He is amazing..everyone just falls in love with him. While he has Jennifer's kindness..I feel like he has more of me in him. He is quick witted and very smart. He can charm the socks off anyone. " Isabella laughed, " That does sound like you." Jack sat watching his daughter, she was so upset and scared. he wished he could hold her and tell her it will all be alright. As if he could hear Jack..Robert came to his sister and sat next to her. She looked at him , " He is going be fine..he has to be." He wrapped his arms around her and she cried in his arms. Jack sighed, " I knew he would not let me down. Robert will be there for Abigail and Jack now. Jack looks up his big brother..like his father does with his. Robert absolutely adores him , he and Abigail are still working on a relationship but i am sure it will work out. I don't think Jennifer would stop him from having a relationship with them.." Isabella cocked her head , " What about Jennifer. Jack?" Jack stood , " Well..I can see now what drew me to her in the first place. It was almost like having Sara back. She was the same age as was Sara when we met, same major in college, both high spirited and stubborn. But the difference was that Jennifer always seemed more ...fragile..I guess. She needed someone to take care of her and I needed to take care of someone. I also know now..why I would never give up no matter what happened. I had given up on Sara and me and I could not stand to lose another person I loved. I did love Jennifer..with all my heart but..it was always such a struggle. We could never hold on..I always seemed to be fighting for her..it got to be very one sided. Then Sara came back into my life, and I remembered what it felt like to be truly happy and not afraid that I was going to lose it all at any moment. Jennifer will be ok..of that I am certain. She will find love again. " They were back by Sara now, she was sitting on the floor head back and eyes closed. " She has brought me happiness I never thought I would ever have. I promised her..I promised her I would never leave her again. " Jack sat down next to her, " I don't want to leave them, I am not ready..I want to grow old with her. I want more time with her. It isn't fair...to them ..what about my family. My children still need me. Sara..Sara will be alone..I don't want her to be alone.." Isabella felt for him, " Oh Jack..none of us want to leave our loved ones. Very few of us are every ready to leave." Jack pulled his eyes from Sara, " Is there anything I can do? " They both turned to see a nurse standing in front of Sara. " Mrs Deveraux? " Sara looked up, " Yes?.." The nurse gave her a sad smile. " I have your husbands's things for you." Sara thanked her and opened the bag. The tears welled up as she looked at his blood soaked shirt. Then she found his jacket. She held it to her face and breathed in the scent of his cologne. Sara started to sob. Jack crouched down next to her and Isabella could see the pain on his face. Sara took out his jacket, and wrapped it around her tightly. Sara found his wedding ring in his outside pocket. She held it up o her lips, " You have to fight Jack..fight to stay with me." Jack leaned closer to her, " I am trying..Sara..I am trying. I love you so much." Sara closed her eyes and the tears spilled out running down her her cheeks. Then they were back in the operating room. They watched as they repeatedly shocked Jack's heart. One surgeon wanted to call time of death, but the other insisted they try again. " No..again.." he said to the nurse. Jack turned and looked to Isabella. She gave him a smile, " You heard her Jack.. fight..you have to fight now Jack. " He nodded and looked back over to see then shock is heart again.

Sara felt something in the inside pocket and she reached in and pulled out the disk. She smiled, You are good Jack." The doctors came into the hallway, " Mrs Deveraux? " Sara got up and they all rushed over to him. " How is he?" she asked. "It was touch and go for a while ..we lost him several times but..he made through." Everyone exhaled. " He is still in critical condition. The bullet also hit his lung, but we finally found it a and stopped the bleeding. He is in coma right now, hopefully he will come out of it in the next 48 hours." Sara frowned , " And if he doesn't?" The doctor did not want to commit to anything at this time , he was trying to give her some hope. " Let's just wait and see. I wouldn't count him out..your husband is quite a fighter. " Sara smiled and looked at Steve who smiled back at her, " He sure is." his brother said with pride. " May I see him? " she asked. Sara was told that they would be bringing him down from recovery in about an hour, she would be allowed in then for a few minutes. After the doctor walked away Sara reached into the pocket and handed Ben the disk. " What's this?" he asked. Sara smiled, " It's the disk they were looking for. The proof of the arms and drug deals they were running. Jack found..he had it in his jacket , he asked me to give it to you. " Ben's mouth dropped open, " How?....Where?" Sara shrugged , " I don't know the details..I only know he found it." Robbie looked at Sara, " That's what he was trying to say..he was trying to tell them he had it when Donnelly shot him. If he had listened to him..." Steve looked at Sara, "Then we would all be dead." Robbie looked at him. " They never would have let us walk out of there alive. After Jack handed that over..we would have done..no witnesses." Sara did not care about any of that.. Jack was alive and he was fighting to stay that way..that's all she needed to know.



Sara walked into his room and just stood at the foot of his bed for a moment looking at him. He was so still. He was attached to monitors and had an oxygen mask over his mouth. Sara walked to the side of his bed and kissed his forehead. She smoothed his hair out of his eyes. " You did good Jackie. Just keep fighting...I need you to keep fighting for us.." Sara lifted his hand and slid his ring back on it. " There..that's much better. " She kissed his hand and held onto it. " I am here with you..I will be here whenever you are ready to open those beautiful blue eyes. Just come back to me..I need you." she whispered as the tears streamed down her cheeks again.

I really enjoyed hearing Jack tell Isabella about the family and friends gathered and his feelings for them. Keep fighting Jack!

Chapter 74


One by one Jack's friends and family came in to see him. Sara waited silently outside as it was limited to two visitors at a time. " Sara honey, why don't you go home for a while, get some sleep. Moma and I will stay with him. " Sara shook her head , " Oh..no..I can't leave..what if he wakes up or something happens..no..I have to stay near him." Adrienne rubbed Sara's back as Jo came over. They were waiting for Robbie and Abby to come out. " Sara now I insist that you at least go to the cafeteria and get something to eat..not just coffee ..real food. " Sara looked at her mother in-law , she really did mean well and it would be sometime before she could be with him again. Sara had not eaten in almost twenty four hours and was living on coffee. " That's a real good idea Moma, come on Shortstuff let's you and me go get something to eat." Sara agreed and as they were walking out Ben came in. " How 's Jack ? " he asked. " Same..I was just taking Sara to get some food." Steve said. " Mind if I join you ? I can fill you in on what's going on. " Sara looked at Ben and sighed, " Sure..that would be fine. " When they were in the elevator Sara turned to Ben, " I never got a chance to thank you Ben for everything you did yesterday." Ben looked down at her, his heart was breaking for her , he wished he could hold her and make everything alright for her. He knew though only Jack could do that now. " Well I did what I could but Steve is the real hero." Sara looked up at her brother in-law, " Yes he is..just like Jack said he was. You do know that Jack thinks you're the bravest man he has ever known. He really looks up to you..it's quite sweet really." Steve looked from Ben to Sara, " Yeah well that's just cause I'm the big brother." Sara smiled and the doors opened and they walked down to the cafeteria.



Jo and Adrienne sat with Jack, both crying. Jo fixed his blanket and held his hand, " You have so much to live for son. Three wonderful children and Sara..Sara loves you so much. She loves you the way you deserve to be loved. We all love you and need you Jack. Steve and Adrienne and me .." Adrienne spoke up for Jo as she started crying again. " We all need you too Jack. Steve and I were just talking about how wonderful it was to have our family finally together..you can't leave us now..."



Robbie sat with Abby and had his arm around her. Katie had left and Dean and Angela were napping in the lounge. " I can't go through losing him again" Abby sobbed. Robbie held her closer, The elevator doors opened and Abby jumped up. "Mom.." and she ran into Jennifer's arms. JJ ran over to Robbie and he lifted him into his arms and held him close. " Is Daddy still sick?" Tears filled Robbie's eyes but he fought them back, "Yeah buddy..he's still sick." Robbie watched as Jennifer and Abby held on to each other. He could see Jennifer crying. How was his mother going to react when she saw Jennifer there ? He was worried, would that be the final piece that would send her into a meltdown ?



Ben told them how the disk had contained everything they needed to put General Donnolly and Barnes away for life. He told them that the General was trying to make a deal but they weren't interested. Sara was pleased that they were able to get the evidence that kept him from squirming out of a conviction. Sara excused herself to get more coffee. Ben watched her walk away, " She's barely hanging on. I hope Jack wakes up soon." Steve looked at him , " Do you? " Ben pulled his eyes from Sara and looked at Steve. " Of course I do. Look Jack and I may not be best friends but I would never want to see anything happen to him. " Steve looked down into his cup. " I know that man, I'm sorry. I guess we're all just hanging on here. " Ben watched Steve for a moment, he liked him and thought he was one of the best cops he'd ever met. " Listen I have a proposition for you." Steve looked at him with a raised eyebrow.



Jennifer went in and sat next to Jack. The tears streamed down as she watched him. He was so still. She had already seen him like this, she had prayed she never would again. She took his hand and held it up to her cheek. " Oh Jack.." Then she leaned down and kissed him softly. Sara stood behind her barely containing herself. " I would appreciate it if you did not kiss my husband Jennifer." Jennifer stood straight up and faced Sara. " He was my husband too, twice. I will always love him. " Sara walked over to her, their noses almost touching. "Well I am his wife NOW. I am warning you ..Don't push me. I am not going to ask you to leave the hospital, but you will excuse me if I don't allow you in here again as visitation is for FAMILY only. Now if you don't mind I would like to be alone with my husband." Jennifer stood for a moment , she could see the anger in Sara, simmering just below the surface. She glanced back once more at Jack and left the room. Sara closed the door and collapsed into the chair. Her body shook as she cried silently. Robbie stood behind her and placed his hand on her shoulder , He knelt down beside her. " I wish she hadn't come here..I can't take one more thing I really can't. Oh Robbie..I can't lose him..I just can't go back to living without him."

Yikes. Sara was a little overboard. I understand her hurting but Jennifer is too.

It's so sad to see everyone hurting so much. I think Sara is so close to a breakdown that Jennifer's presence is more than she can handle right now. I feel for Jennifer too. She still loves Jack so much.

Chapter 75

After crying herself out for a good forty five minutes , Sara washed up and kissed Jack, " I will be back in a little while, I have been selfish..everyone else wants to spend more time with you too." Sara walked outside and Dean was handing out coffee. " So..you smelled the coffee? " Sara smiled," Yeah..thanks, you and Ang want to go in for a while." Dean sighed , " I think Robbie really wants to go in alone for a few minutes. " Sara looked at her son who was holding JJ. JJ climbed down and ran to her arms extended, " Hey little man." He hugged Sara and put his head to hers, " Daddy is going to get better..you'll see. Robbie said so." Sara looked at her son and he gave her a sad smile. " I know he is sweetie. He is just really tired and needs more rest." Robbie stood and walked down towards Jack's room. Sara looked over and found who she sought. " Sweetie why don't you go help Uncle Dean hand out the coffee? " She placed him down and he ran over to Dean , eager to help. Sara walked over to the row of chairs furthest away. " Abigail..May I speak to your mother..alone please?" Abby looked to her mother who nodded. Sara sat next to Jennifer , both woman , eyes forward, sat in silence for a moment then Sara spoke. " I may have overreacted earlier. I wish to apologize for the harshness of my words, they were uncalled for. Jennifer took a deep breath, " Maybe not completely. I do know what you are going through right now, I have been in your position before." Sara looked down, " Yes..in my exact position. Look Jennifer..we don't have to be best friends or even like each other, but the bottom line here is...you are ..family..and you always will be. I think once we establish some boundaries we can make this work." Jennifer turned her head and stared at Sara , she knew how hard those words were for her to say.But she said them anyway , not just for Jack but for his children as well. She wondered if she would have been able to do the same if the situation were reversed. " Thank you for that Sara. I am sure we can work things out. I will try to be more respectful of..well your feelings. " Sara nodded, " If you wish to go in and see Jack..well when Robbie comes out.." Jennifer gave her a small smile, " Thank you..I will go in with Abigail." Sara sighed, " Thank you."

Robbie stood next to his father and took a shuddering breath. " You know..you have to wake up. We just started to build a relationship here. I have waited all my life for you..now, well while I am thrilled to have siblings and Aunts and Uncles and Grandparents, I want my father..more then anything I want you. I mean whose going to help me with wake up from those nightmares, huh? And Mom..it would totally destroy her if you..Well just wake up ok. " He leaned down and kissed him on the head, whispering, " I love you Dad."



Jo had convinced everyone but Sara to go have dinner.Sara went back into his room, the forty eight hours were coming to an end , still he would not open his eyes. Jack and been fighting, not that anyone could see it but he was. Then his heart rate started to drop and monitors went off, " Oh god no!.." They came bursting into his room with a crash cart. Sara stood in the corner and could only watch as they tried once more to shock Jack back to life. Jack was watching, and Isabella came to him. " This is it Jack..it's up to you now." Jack looked at her, " I can't ...I feel so weak..I don't think I have anything fight left in me." Isabella inched closer, " I know..that's why it's up to you now. " Jack looked past Isabella, Sara stood holding her cross in her hand, the cross Jack had given her on their wedding night. She was crying , he walked over to her, " I have tried..Sara ..I have tried to come back to you." Then Sara closed her eyes and whispered, " You have to fight harder Jack..Don't leave me alone..you promised me. Take your strength from me..from my love for you..from OUR love...Come on Jack..FIGHT ! " Jack looked back to Isabella, " She loves you very much..she isn't willing to give up..are you?" Sara's body flinched as they hit Jack again. The monitor beep and he was back again. " Thank you.." She whispered. Isabella walked over to him and gazed down , "Goodbye Jack"



Angela came into the room carrying a sandwich. " Eat this" she said as she placed the plate in front of her. " I am not hungry." Sara said softly. " That's too bad..because you are going to eat anyway. " Sara turned and looked at her friend. "Is that so? You plan on force feeding me? " Angela stepped closer, " If I have to. " Sara laughed, " Oh that I would like to see." Angela picked up half the sandwich, " Then watch this.." Sara crossed her arms and stood her ground. " Eat the damn sandwich." Sara and Angela turned and saw Jack eyes half open and a small smile on his face , " Jack!.." Sara rushed to his side, " Welcome back...I've missed you." Jack raised his hand and wiped the tear from her cheek. " Hey ..how my beautiful wife? " Sara kissed his hand , " Better now.."
