Chapter 1c


He flipped his cell phone over and over in his other hand, avoiding rereading the email Brady sent. Ordinarily, he’d have deleted it, but this time he couldn’t and there was only one reason—the name in the subject line. “Chloe’s making a big mistake,” it said.

Inside, the message read, “You’re the only one who can get through to her. Call me.” The message was so cryptic that Philip didn’t know what the issue was, just that it irritated him beyond reason to receive the message.

He looked down into the blackness of the sea.

Given their history, Philip knew it must have taken a lot for his nephew to admit that Philip had more sway over Chloe than Brady did, but it was true. Their lifelong friendship and on-and-off romance had lasted longer than half of all marriages. Still, he’d washed his hands of all things Salem, including Chloe. Even though the last time he saw her, he told her he’d always take her calls, he secretly hoped she’d never call. In spite of the countless fantasies he’d had of her showing up at his door, he was painfully aware that she was bad for his emotional health and bad for his ego. And he’d be damned if he’d ever again subject himself to the torture he endured, both physically and emotionally—the last time he was in Salem.

They were in the cafe outside of town and he exposed his heart to her. He told her he’d fallen in love with her again.

Flashback to seven months earlier:
Philip: You're not seriously thinking of keeping this from Nicole because of Deimos?
Chloe: I don't want to. But I feel like I have to. I love this baby. I have a responsibility.
Philip: A responsibility? Nicole's the mother. End of story.
Chloe: If only Nicole wasn't so blind to Deimos.
Philip: Blind or not, it's still her baby, Chloe.
Chloe: Biologically, yes. But it's also Daniel's child and Parker's sibling. [She rubbed her stomach] So I feel even more obligated to do what's best for my unborn baby.
Philip: I hear everything you're saying. But think about how you'd feel if you were Nicole. Wouldn't you want to know?
Chloe: I'm not saying that I'm never gonna tell her. But as long as she's with Deimos, I can't risk it. It's not safe. Which is why this has to stay a secret. Please, please tell me you can keep it.
Philip: Do you even have to ask?
Chloe: Thank you.
Philip: Do you want to know why I'm agreeing to something I think is wrong?
Chloe: I'm assuming because you agree that it's a horrible idea for Deimos to raise this baby.
Philip: It's got nothing to do with Deimos... and everything to do with you and me.
Chloe: I don't know what you mean.
Philip: When we were pretending to be a couple, at some point, it stopped being pretend for me. That's when I realized, after everything that's happened between us, good and bad... I love you, Chloe.
Chloe: I … I didn’t expect this--
Philip: You don't have to say that you love me too or even that you don't. I just needed to get it out there, and you need to let it sink in and... just know that whatever happens, I’ve got your back.

I can understand why Philip would be conflicted about talking to Chloe again.

I'm glad Philip realized that Chile's behavior was wrong last time he talked to her. It'll be interesting to see what happens when they do talk/meet.

Poor Philip. To be completely out on his own with no one to support him emotionally. I think getting out of Salem was the best thing to do because he didn't really have a lot of support there either. I just hope he doesn't get drug back in and end up in worse shape.

Try as he might, Philip can’t ignore the email. So he replies to Brady and soon comes to regret his decision.

I liked the angsty flashback. I don't think Philip will be able to resist the urge to find out what is going on with Chloe.

He told her he’d fallen in love with her again. He would have given her everything. He was even willing to raise her baby as his own before he knew the child was Nicole’s. And her response to his declaration was “I wasn’t expecting this.” That was it. That, and a sympathetic squeeze of his hand, like she felt sorry for him.

It felt like a bucket of cold water got dumped on his head. She was telling him she didn’t feel the same and she didn’t need to tell him twice. Her reaction — or lack thereof — made him sorry he told her, very sorry. It wasn’t long before he wished he hadn’t bared his heart to her, but he was never someone who could keep his feelings to himself, especially when it came to Chloe. Yes, there were other women he loved, but they came and went. Chloe was the one woman whose imprint left an indelible mark on his soul. She took hold of his heart eighteen years ago and never let it go.

He dangled the phone over the railing. If he threw it in the ocean, he wouldn’t have to hear from any of these people anymore. He wouldn’t hear from anyone anymore and he would officially be a hermit. The phone would be gone and no one knew where he lived.

Even if the phone were gone, Brady’s message would continue to burn a hole in Philip’s brain. He didn’t want to think about it. He didn’t want to think about her. He’d finally pushed her to the far corners of his mind over the past few months, and he was very comfortable with that, far more than the place she normally occupied, a place that caused him pain every time he thought of her.

“Damn it,” he mumbled out loud letting the cigarette fall from his hand instead of the phone. He watched the orange embers struggle to stay afloat on top of the water until the waves overtook them and drowned them in the murkiness.

I totally get why Philip doesn’t want to get involved with this, after how things turned out when he left.

It must have been painful for Philip to be rejected like that. As much as he cares about Chloe, I wouldn't blame him if he just moved on.

I agree with Philip. Throwing his phone in the ocean won't keep him from thinking about Chloe especially after Brady's email.
