I’m so happy you enjoyed some of the lighthearted scenes this week with Parker and the Van Dykes. They were fun to write and I could actually picture Dick Van Dyke doing a soft-shoe with Parker.

Chapter 54b


Captain Nyland turned to Chloe. “Chloe? Would you like to say something to Philip?”

“Well, I didn’t prepare anything, obviously, but you know something?” She shook her head. “I don’t need to prepare. The captain said it’s been a long hard road, and he’s right. And I’m a big part of why it’s taken us so long to get to a good place.”

“Chloe….”

“It’s okay,” she said, cutting Philip off. “Because it makes this moment so much more meaningful. I can’t say this in front of a roomful of people who I might inadvertently offend, but Philip, it’s always been you. Always. This may sound a little corny, but that’s what weddings are for, right?” She paused and began to choke up. “You complete me. You truly do. Anytime we’ve been apart, there’s always an emptiness—an emptiness that only you can fill. I love you, Philip, and I can’t believe how hard it once was for me to say those words to you, because now? Now it’s the easiest thing in the world.” A tear rolled down her cheek as she smiled at him. He smiled back, squeezing her hand. “Philip,” she sighed. “Loving you is so easy and I want nothing more than to love you for the rest of my life, both you and Parker. I am going to dedicate myself to making you as happy as you make me every day of our lives.”

“And that’s how it shall be,” the captain said. “By the authority vested in me by the maritime laws of North America, I pronounce you husband and wife.” He smiled at the couple. “Have at it.”

Philip smiled broadly, his dimples on display. He leaned closer to Chloe and she put her arms behind his neck, while his arms encircled her waist. Pulling her against his body, he pressed his lips to hers and lifted her slightly off the ground before setting her down again, and sealed their vows with long kiss. When he leaned away, he brushed her hair back with his fingertips.

“Congratulations, Philip, Chloe,” the captain said. He shook Philip’s hand, then Chloe’s, before gesturing for his staff to head back to their posts.

Left alone under the stars, Philip and Chloe kissed again.

“This was perfect,” Chloe whispered, her eyes damp with tears.

“Was it what you were hoping for?”

“Yes, I loved it. I love you. Thank you for making my wedding wish come true.”

“Oh baby, that’s just the first of many wishes I plan to make come true for you. For the rest of your life.”
