Chapter Thirty-Five
After signing the check, they left the bar and crossed the lobby to the private elevators. As the doors closed, Philip grabbed Stephanie and pulled her into his arms.
“Where are we going?” Stephanie asked, pulling away from him as the elevator dinged at each floor they passed.
The car came to a stop and the doors opened. “I was wondering when you were going to ask that.” Taking her hand, Philip led Stephanie down a short hallway to the suite he’d checked into before he’d left Chicago this morning.
As they entered the luxurious room, Stephanie looked around in shock. She stopped in front of the windows. “Oh my gosh, Philip! You booked the Peninsula suite…”
Philip came up behind her. Placing his hands on her hips, he guided her around to face him. “When your girlfriend is the widow of the heir to a billion dollar empire, you have to work extra hard to impress her,” he stated as she ran her hands up his chest, grasping the lapels of Philip’s jacket.
“You don’t, actually,” Stephanie replied, leaning in to kiss hm. “I don’t need to be impressed.”
Philip stopped her. “I wanted to do something special for you since I ruined our lunch plans and then we missed dinner too.”
“That’s not necessary,” Stephanie replied, trying to kiss him again.
“I feel bad,” he admitted, ignoring her attempt to kiss him.
“Philip,” she sighed, dropping her hands from his chest, “why does it seem like there’s something more that you are feeling bad about?”
“You’re being suspicious for no reason,” he replied, unbuttoning his suit jacket.
“You think I’m being suspicious?” she asked out, resting her hand on her hip.
“Well … yes,” Philip admitted, moving to sit down on one of the leather chairs in the living room.
Stephanie stepped in front of him and tugged her skirt up. She then climbed onto the chair and straddled Philip’s lap, asking, “do you really want to get into an argument right now?”
“Definitely not,” Philip replied as he began to unbutton her white blouse.
Tugging the shirt from her waistband, Philip trailed his fingers up Stephanie’s torso. He ran his hands up her sides while his mouth pressed kisses against her skin. “Are you sure about this?” he asked.
Stephanie looked down at him. “I’m more than sure,” she replied, running her hands over his muscular shoulders. “No regrets.”
“No regrets,” Philip agreed.

Wow what a scene! I loved every minute of this. I'm glad there are no regrets on Stephanie's end and loved the banter. Eager to see what happens next. I hope there will be previews so I can get through the weekend unavitasegreta

Next week is a hard week to give previews without spoiling too much, so I'll just say that Ivy is worried enough to make a trip to University Hospital in Salem.

Chapter Thirty-Six
Stephanie opened her eyes, hearing a buzzing noise coming from somewhere nearby. Realizing it was a cell phone, she reached onto the nightstand where her phone was next to Philip’s. Grabbing hers to see if her mother-in-law was calling about Ava, she noticed Philip’s phone display was lit up.
"Your phone is going off,” she called to Philip. When he didn’t respond, she reached for his phone. He probably couldn’t hear her in the shower. It kept buzzing, thus she decided to take it to him.
Pushing the sheet off her body, Stephanie reached for Philip’s shirt to wrap around her when the phone buzzed again. Looking down at it, her smile faded.
Melanie: Tried 2 call all morning. U must b busy. Melanie: Thx 4 yesterday. Melanie: Was great being with u again!! Melanie: It kinda felt like us again, y know? Melanie: Why did we ever break up? hahaha
Stephanie stared down at the string of texts appearing on Philip’s phone. She suddenly realized that Philip had been with Melanie all day yesterday. That was why he had canceled lunch and then missed dinner.
She jerked her arms out of Philip’s shirt and started hunting around the room for her clothes.
Philip came back into the room as she was nearly dressed. “Why are you dressed? I thought we were going to-” He stopped talking, noticing that Stephanie was upset. “What’s wrong? Is it Ava?”
“No,” Stephanie laughed bitterly. “I can’t believe I was stupid enough to think that there could be a future for us.”
“What are you talking about?” Philip asked, confused.
“Us,” she scoffed, “well, there is no us. There never was, was there? Not after she came to town.”
“Who?”
“Who do you think?” Stephanie asked. “The person you were with yesterday when you told me that you were too busy at work and that we’d have to postpone our date until last night.”
“What?”
“I know you were with Melanie yesterday, not at work.”
“I was at work,” Philip defended.
“Stop lying to me!” she yelled, picking up his phone. “You cancelled on me to spend the day with Melanie.”

Oh no! This is bad. Really bad. I hope Philip has a good excuse or else I'll be just as upset as Stephanie!

Chapter Thirty-Seven
Stephanie felt the phone in her hand buzzing again. “Oh, look, she sent even more texts. Forgot what a great guy u r. Still sexy too,” Stephanie read from the screen.
“You read my texts!” Philip exclaimed.
Stephanie couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “Seriously … you’re going to get mad at me for that?”
“I’m upset that you saw something that wasn’t meant for you and misinterpreted it.”
“You don’t get to be mad at me, damn it. I’m not the one who left my phone lying around when I was lying to the girl I just seduced!” Stephanie threw the phone on the bed.
“I left it there because I have nothing to hide.”
“Really? Nothing to hide, Philip? Because it’s pretty obvious that you were lying to me yesterday.”
“I can explain,” Philip sighed.
Stephanie held her hands up. “I don’t care. It doesn’t matter.”
“It most certainly matters!”
“No, it doesn’t,” Stephanie insisted. “I don’t care why Melanie is texting you endlessly. Or why you were with her yesterday. I don’t need to know. The reason we broke up before was because you couldn’t get over Melanie. I’m done being second best. I am not some young girl with nothing to lose. I was about to let you into my kid’s life. And I was about to make a huge mistake. So the next time you see Melanie, you can thank her for me.”
“Stephanie …”
“I'm done, Philip,” she told him, turning and leaving the bedroom.
“I don’t care about Melanie. I love you.”
She spun around, “don’t you dare say that to me!”
“It’s the truth.”
“Now you’re telling the truth,” she scoffed.
“I’ll prove it to you.”
“How?”
Stepping closer to her, Philip pulled Stephanie to him and kissed her, putting everything that he felt into it. “Please let me explain.”
Stephanie pushed him away. “It doesn’t matter,” she told him, her voice much quieter now.
“You have to understand,” he told her.
“I understand, Philip,” she said sadly. “I won’t let you break my heart again. I’m sorry.”
Touching his cheek, she turned and walked out the door.
Philip watched as the door closed behind her. He walked back to the bedroom and picked up the phone. “Damn it, Melanie,” he cursed, reading the messages. What she’d written certainly didn’t look good. And he had lied to Stephanie, but not because he had any interest in Melanie. He just didn’t want to have to explain to Stephanie why he was meeting up with her. That had obviously been a bad decision.
Collapsing on the bed, he tried to figure out what to do.

Oy. Philip needs to learn that lying never works and always creates the situation he was trying to avoid. I hope this can be straightened out eventually.
So okay, I buy he wasn't having an affair with Melanie. So what WAS he doing?
