Wow. This was so emotional. I loved hearing Philip's thoughts here. I don't know how he and Chloe are going to rebuild, but I agree with gapeach. When they do it is going to be beyond phenomenal!

Chapter 67a


Seated at the head table with the other speakers, Chloe opened the program and saw that she was up next. Even though she was used to getting up in front of thousands of people, she was still a little nervous. This wasn’t a play and she wasn’t singing opera. She couldn’t hide behind some fictional character. She would be out there for the world to see and the world to judge. This time, she’d have to be herself, and she had to know her subject well. As a key speaker, she was expected to be an authority.

She also needed to make sure she concentrated on her presentation without allowing her mind to drift to Philip. She could still feel the tears burning behind her eyes. She hoped the eyedrops did their job so that her eyes didn’t look as bloodshot anymore. The conversation on the plane was a killer and if she thought too much about it, she just might fall apart. There was plenty of time to fall apart later. For now, it was show time. She was just glad that Philip wasn’t going to be attending. If anything could throw her off her game, seeing him in the audience would do it.

When the previous speaker left the stage, she heard the emcee announce her name. So she took a deep breath and rose from her chair.

As Chloe walked to the podium amid polite applause, the video portion of her presentation began to play on the screen behind her, accompanied by Vivaldi’s Four Seasons on audio. Standing in front of the microphone, she looked out at the sea of industry representatives seated at circular tables of 10 and 12 per table. She smiled and reminded herself to speak slowly and don’t forget to breathe.

“Thank you for the warm welcome. I’m Chloe Lane, Vice President of DreamTunes, Titan Corporation’s music division. Before I begin, I have a confession to make."

Ooh. I wonder what Chloe's confession is and whether Philip will end up hearing it. Glad it's only Thursday ..for a second I thought that was a Friday cliffhanger.

Chapter 67b


“Before I begin, I have a confession to make. I’m not a businessperson. I know most of you have worked in the business for a lot of years. As for me, I wasn’t chosen to run DreamTunes because I know a lot about big business — because I don’t, although I’m learning. I was chosen to run DreamTunes because of my knowledge of music, mostly opera. I spent a few years in Austria as mezzo soprano with the Vienna State Opera and I toured here in the states with the Kansas City Opera Company.

See, for me, music has always been like a soundtrack for my life. I discovered it when I was just a kid and it defined my existence. My ex-husband thinks he was my first love, so don’t tell him I said this, but he was actually my second love.

My first love was opera. … I know I know. Can you imagine? I started listening to opera when I was just a teenager and, believe me when I say a took a lot of grief from my high school classmates over it. Everyone thought opera was so maudlin. They called me freak and ghoul girl because of it. But you know what? I felt sorry for them because they were the ones who didn’t get it. They were all listening to pop music that didn’t mean anything. To me, opera meant something. It was deep and evocative and intellectual and emotional and it made me feel things. In fact, it was sometimes the only way I was able to express my feelings. Through music.

When we launched DreamTunes a year and a half ago, I had this vision of giving listeners access to music that would become the anthem of their lives, that would be important to them now and in the future.”

Chloe felt herself choking up. The music that was playing in the background was getting to her. It would have been no big deal if she and Philip hadn’t had that painful conversation on the plane. … No, that’s not true. This music would evoke a poignant sadness no matter what. It brought back a very specific and significant time in her past with Philip.

When she realized that was exactly the point she was trying to make in her presentation, Chloe decided to use her tears to her advantage. So she channeled her inner diva and, with a shaky voice, she continued.
