Who is this Monica, I wonder, and who does she really work for?
Great chapter as usual! Can't wait for more.

Man I love Nicole. I also love that she's still skeptical that Philip would cheat. Me too, Nicole!

The evidence is piling up against Philip. What an awful thing to overhear.

You NEVER hear anything good when you eavesdrop!!! But I am holding out that Kpatch is going to work this out. After all, the title IS 'Happily Ever After' and they have to be together for that to happen!!!!!

Chapter 4
“Have you confronted him about it?” Nicole asked.
“Of course, and he denied it,” Chloe pouted. “The first time he denied it, I decided I’d give him the benefit of the doubt, so I dropped the subject. I really didn’t want to believe it, Nicole.” Looking around to make sure no one was listening, she leaned over the table. “This is going to sound weird, but no one ever cheated on me before, Nicole. And out of all the men, I would never have expected Philip to be the one who’d be unfaithful to me.”
“Well, if it’s true, you should definitely kick him to the curb,” Nicole said, spilling some of her drink as she moved the glass in her hand a little too enthusiastically.
“Even though I’ve cheated on people too?” Chloe wondered. “In a way, I don’t feel like I have a right to judge anyone. Maybe I deserve it.”
“You’re kidding, right?” Nicole set her glass down and set her friend straight immediately. “Of course you have the right to judge. When it’s your bus hand — I mean husband who’s cheating, you most definitely have every right to judge. But,” she squinted, “I’m getting this vibe. You don’t seem all that broken up about it.”
Tears sprang to Chloe’s eyes. Nicole’s probe brought her suppressed emotions to the surface. “I’m really good at bottling up my emotions, remember? But I’m dying inside, Nicole. You have no idea how much I wanted to be wrong about this.”
Nicole reached for Chloe’s hand across the table. “I am so sorry, sweetie. I understand how you feel, I truly do.” She picked up her cocktail with her other hand but before she took a sip, she set it down again. “So weird. Of all the people I know in this world, I thought you and Philip were the perfect couple. I mean you guys even look the part, like…”
Chloe nodded and made a plucking gesture with her hand. “Like the plastic couple they put on top of the wedding cake.”
“Yes!” Nicole agreed, “Or Sleeping Beauty and Prince Charming!”
“Well, they’re not real.” Chloe felt the knot in her stomach tightening. “Sleeping Beauty and Prince Charming are a fairy tale. The bride and groom on the cake, they aren’t real. And I guess me and Philip weren’t really real either. No fairy tale ending for us.”
“Oh. You poor thing. I can see this is eating you alive. Not like flesh-eating bacteria or anything, but still.” Letting go of Chloe’s hand, she sat up in her chair and swirled the cherry pick in her lemon drop. “I’m still in shock. But … what about Philip? I can’t imagine him agreeing to a divorce under any circumference. I mean circumstance.”
“It’s not like I’m not giving him a whole lot of choice,” Chloe washed down her words with a sip of her vodka martini.
As the booze took control of her brain, Nicole mused aloud. “So, hmmm … Philip is um single again?”
“He will be soon,” Chloe replied sadly.
“He still as sexy as ever?” Nicole wondered, a little sparkle in her eye.
“Wish he wasn’t,” Chloe sighed. Her eyes went wide when she realized what Nicole was alluding to. “Nicole!”
“Well, if you don’t want him….”

I like where Nicole is going with this. I hope she's trying to make Chloe see that the idea of Philip being single and free for another woman to swoop in and take is just not an option!

Chloe said the first time she confronted Philip she accepted his denial and gave him the benefit of the doubt. I wonder if she saw or heard more evidence to convince her otherwise.

I just can't believe this. Something else must be going on. There's got to be something that we don't know about that's happened. There is no way that Chloe and Philip would break up! Great story Kpatch! I can't wait to see what you have planned for us!

@kpatch, I really liked the part where Chloe says "No fairy tale ending for us," as if to say no happily ever after, and where talks about her and Philip looking like the couple on the wedding cake. I'm glad she gave him the benefit of the doubt, at least to begin with. I wonder what happened that removed the benefit of doubt.

Chapter 5
“So, hmmm … Philip is um single again?”
“He will be soon,” Chloe replied sadly.
“He still as sexy as ever?” Nicole wondered, a little sparkle in her eye.
“Wish he wasn’t,” Chloe sighed. Her eyes flashed when she realized what Nicole was alluding to. “Nicole!”
“Well, if you don’t want him. … He’s still a catch, right?”
“If you don’t mind being with a guy who cheats!” Chloe paused for a minute before getting angry again. “Great friend you are.”
“I’m kidding, okay?” Nicole whined.
“Are you?” Chloe looked at Nicole skeptically. She was really in need of a friend, but maybe she chose the wrong one. “It wouldn’t be the first time you’ve gone after my guy. Brady. Lucas. Daniel,” she counted off on her fingers. “Philip is just about the only man we haven’t shared.”
“I said I was joking! Sheesh. Don’t be so touchy.” Nicole looked at Chloe’s sad face and her tone softened. “I just … I’m still processing all this. I mean, to say I’m shocked would be the world’s biggest understatement. I feel like I’m supposed to call my editor and tell him to stop the presses. This news is huge.”
“I know. But,” Chloe hesitated before continuing. “Before you call your editor, there’s more.”
“More?” Nicole raised her eyebrows. “What could be bigger than cheating?”
“Well,” Chloe began, “before I found out he was cheating, I noticed that Philip was drinking a lot. I mean, he always comes home and heads for the liquor cabinet.”
“I remember he did that when he lived at Victor’s. We both did,” Nicole remembered. “But he hardly ever was drunk.”
“That’s because he built up a tolerance. You’ve heard the term functional drunk, right.”
“Of course,” Nicole said, about to take another sip, but she set down her glass instead.
“Well, because of Brady and Lucas and their addictions, I tend to be really sensitive about these things and I’d been noticing a lot of empty wine bottles in the recycling bin.” Chloe paused for a moment thinking about what might have driven him to drink. She got choked up. “I mean, if Philip was so thrilled with his life with me, he wouldn’t be drinking all the time, you know?”
