Well, this does not bode well for Chloe and Philip's marriage. Especially with Philip drinking, and things being said that cannot be unsaid. I'm really interested to see how all this plays out. Thank you for the previews, Kpatch! |

Chapter 15a
Holding up the wine glass with the incriminating lipstick prints, Chloe yelled, “How do you explain that??”
“Oh. Oh okay, I know what happened,” Philip said a little too calmly. “And it’s not at all what you’re thinking.” He turned his back and took a few steps away from her. “I had a wine tasting here while you were out of town.”
Chloe knit her brow. “You throw parties here when I’m traveling on business?”
Turning around, he said, “No. I don’t throw parties, Chloe. But … you know the team that’s exploring the possibility of a private label wine for Titan?”
He sounded like he was making this up as he went along. “No.”
“Yes you do,” he whined. “I told you about it.”
Chloe felt weary and a little dizzy from her zig-zagging blood pressure. “No, Philip, you did not tell me about it.”
Philip scratched his temple nervously, a tell-tale sign he was lying, Chloe decided. He wasn’t even looking at her. Instead, he nonchalantly went to the refrigerator and pulled out a bottle of beer. “I could have sworn I did. … Anyway, we had some samples of wine we were tasting and ….”
Chloe watched Philip’s movements closely, like a detective. “Here? Why here?” She wasn’t going to let him off easy this time. She was going to make him explain it all the way.
“Because,” he said, twisting the top on the beer bottle and taking a swig, “we couldn’t do it in the office. It’s against HR policy to drink in the office.”
“I’ll ask again,” Chloe persisted. “Why here?”
“Because … because we have a doorman and he could accept delivery of the cases of wine. The other people on the team don’t have doormen.”
“Oooh, a doorman. That’s good, Philip, really fast thinking,” Chloe mocked. “It explains your drinking binges and the lipstick in one fell swoop.”
“I don’t drink,” he said, taking another hit from the beer bottle.
“What about all those empty wine bottles in recycling?” Chloe asked, placing her hands on her hips.
“I told you. We had a wine tasting,” Philip repeated. “I poured out what we didn’t drink because Parker asked for a taste.” Chloe looked skeptical, so Philip explained, “Okay, maybe I overreacted, but I’ve got too many family members with substance abuse problems, and I don’t want my son to become one of them.”
Chloe thought that was a reasonable explanation, but it didn’t satisfy her. “Uh huh.”
“Good, I’m glad that’s settled.”
Chloe’s eyes widened. He thinks it’s settled?? “It’s not! You’re cheating on me, damn you!”

Chloe sounds a little too quick to judge. I hope she's not done something while away and is trying to deflect or assuage her own guilt!

Philip's whole explanation sounds like a lie. Chloe does have a right to be suspicious and angry. Even though Chloe had cheated on men in the past, she has been faithful to Philip. But obviously he hasn't been faithful to her. I can't wait to see this flashback great chapter!

Wow! great chapter. I'm not sure what to believe. Chloe has good reasons for being suspicious and Philip's explanations are a bit too convenient. But at the same time, Chloe has had a pattern of being insecure, and Philip's explanation is plausible...

Philip did sound like he was making up a story. It is plausible but harder to believe after the suspicious observations Chloe has been making.
