The parade has been canceled by rain, and many Salemites gather to wait out the storm in the Brady Pub. While there, they fantasize about the Best Picture nominees from 2011, and what would happen if they were made in Salem. From True Grit to The Social Network and all the way to The Kings Speech, they're all there. Read our exclusive interview with Peter Reckell about taking on the classic role of True Grit's Rooster Cogburn.
Days_Allison: Was it fun to do something outside of Bo?
Peter Reckell: What makes you think it was outside of Bo?! It was a blast to do something like that. Daytime is so quick; I wish we'd had more time to play with that stuff. Every minute, every time we rehearsed it, it was more and more fun. And getting into it was a blast. One of the crew guys said we haven't seen anything out of you besides Bo in twenty some years! It's very fun to do something different.
Days_Allison: You must know Bo so well.
Peter Reckell: Yeah, I know every aspect of Bo. I don't have to do any homework or anything about who I am as Bo. But obviously with different characters I have to use both parts of my brain and get my imagination started! It started waking up!
Days_Allison: Had you seen both versions of the movie?
Peter Reckell: I haven't seen the first one. I was hoping to get a chance to see it. It was difficult getting a copy of the new version because it isn't out yet. But I was hoping to have time to see the old one and get some of the John Wayne stuff in there. But that was just too many levels for me!
Days_Allison: Did doing this make you nervous at all?
Peter Reckell: It was pretty nerve-wracking to jump into this again. But when I heard about it, and as soon as I started playing around with it, it was just so much fun. I said, yahoo, I wish I could do this more! And the scenes that I had to do were a lot of fun. And working with Molly, she's great and I've always wanted to work with her. I think she's a good little actress. So the two of us had some fun. Our character stuff in Days has been limited, so it was fun to play with her. And in this, there's a lot of character stuff to do. A different voice, and carrying myself differently. There was a whole lot of different things. With Bo, all I worry about is making sure I can say the lines and the rest is kind of automatic. But in True Grit, that's a real "character" character. I wanted to get the feel of Bridges. I didn't really want to imitate him, but I wanted that feel.
Days_Allison: Both movies have such a specific use of language. Were you worried about that?
Peter Reckell: No, that was fun. I'm glad. When I watched the movie, I though, huh. I wonder if that's really the way they spoke? But it was great to have it. When you first start the movie, you think, what are they doing with the dialogue? Then once you're in it for a few minutes, it puts you in a different place. And they did it very well. I was happy that our writers were able to emulate that.
Days_Allison: What did you enjoy the most?
Peter Reckell: Just the creative process. Working on the voice. Working on my movement. Working on the whole costume and patch and hat. All that wardrobe and everything happened at the last minute like we do here. It was just flying along and doing things as they came at you. Oh, the patch now! Seeing out of one eye! That's weird! I have to put my hat on. We flew. I got to the end of the day and I thought, what happened? I was a little shell - shocked, actually! Was it okay? Did I say my lines?! There was just so much going on. We were kind of doing the blocking along the way. We had basic blocking, then as Molly and I worked on it, we said, let's try to add this or that. Even when we were shooting it things were different. It would have been fun had we had some more time to do it.
Days_Allison: Did you hear about this before you got near shooting it?
Peter Reckell: I heard rumors about it. I just kind of stuck with, this will be fun to do a character. With the whole show, I'm still kind of wondering what it's about and how it's going to turn out! I'll be watching it with everybody else, going what? How does this fit together?
Days_Allison: How do you think the fans will react?
Peter Reckell: I've done a couple of other things over the decades that I've done Bo and they've always been very, very supportive. I think, hopefully, they'll have a great time and be laughing with me! They'll probably be laughing at me, too!
