Ken's answer to this question certainly indicates that he feels he is on the right track: What would you say to a current disgruntled viewer?I’d ask why, and I’d say that I’m sorry to hear that because the numbers over the last few years did go up. We’ve held through a difficult summer, and the numbers have started to inch back up again. We have to do what we have to do. If that is what he has to say to himself to justify the way DOOL is right now then he can go right ahead It does make it sound like he does not care about the viewer!

Aside from the limited budget, I think their taping schedule has worked against them at times. They don't have the luxury of reacting as quickly as they would like to when a storyline doesn't go over well with viewers.
I'd love for Days to continue, so I will try to support whatever they do.

It's an insightful interview, but it's also very disheartening. His answer to the "bad exits" was a cop-out and shifting the focus, instead of acknowledging that Steve and Bo's exits were bad and they mishandled those situations. If you screw up, own up to it. Don't get defensive and hide behind the schlock of 'we're just looking forward, not backwards'.
The ONLY benefit to filming so far ahead is financial and his answer to that was just nonsensical rambling. The filming schedule isolates the writing team from the fan feedback. That is a huge disadvantage. While I get the ideal of not writing for specific fandoms (even though they obviously do) as part of the creative process of a "writer" (write the story inside you without worry or influence from outside sources), that's just a little too high-brow of an ideal for a long-running soap opera.
Ugh....I always get heartburn after reading a Ken Corday interview.
