I'm glad Philip answered the phone. Hopefully he can get through to Chloe. He needs to be honest with her about how he was feeling.

Thanks everyone for sticking with this story. I will post previews later for those of you who requested it. And I guess even those who didn't. LOL.
Did you like the musical accompaniment the other day? Believe it or not, Rod Stewart's Downtown Train provided the inspiration for Stealing Home. I knew I had to get Chloe to get on that train. Where she went, well, that was her choice. I've been listening to Downtown Train every morning for months, probably since I started posting Stolen Years, the earlier segment of the saga.

Chapter 21
“Here you go, Chloe,” George said, setting a cup of coffee in front of Chloe. “Coffee, light. ... So, why would you say Philip wouldn’t be honest with you? I thought you two were back together and everything was going good.”
“Oh, it was going fine, until I got my memory back. Did you know I had amnesia?” George shook his head no, so she continued. “Well be careful what you wish for, George. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was a lot happier when I didn’t remember how badly Philip hurt me.”
“Huh? What are you talking about? Philip is crazy about you!”
She looked at George skeptically. “Did he tell you that?”
“He did indeed.”
She sniffled. She didn’t want to cry in front of this stranger, but the more she talked, the more emotional she became. “Well he lied. About everything. He’s not crazy about me. It’s Parker he loves. I’m just along for the ride because I happen to be Parker’s mother.” She sifted through her purse until she found a tissue to wipe her nose with.
“Aw, Chloe,” George said sympathetically. “You don’t really believe that.”
“It’s not a question of believing it or not. It’s just a fact.” She picked up her coffee cup and put it down again without drinking any. “See, when Philip learned that another man was Parker’s father last Thanksgiving, he threw me out of the apartment.”
“Nope. I don’t believe it.” George shook his head from side to side. “I saw Philip on Christmas eve. He was practically crawling on his hands and knees in the baby aisle at the Jewel Osco. He was a wreck, Chloe, an absolute wreck -- he was about as low as a man can get.”
“Because of Parker,” she said adamantly.
“No, not just Parker.” George was equally adamant.
“It seems like Philip left out a few important details if that’s what he told you.” Chloe looked at George intently, suddenly struck by the weirdness of the moment. Chloe’s brow furrowed and she crossed her arms on the table. “Excuse me, George, I don’t mean to be rude, but I never even heard Philip mention you until a few weeks ago. How do you know so much?”
“Like I said, I met Philip when he stumbled into the store last Christmas eve as I was closing up. I’ll never forget it. He was dressed like GQ but he’d been drinking and I thought he was homeless, Chloe,” George explained. “Figured the clothes were secondhand or stolen or something. He sat on the floor in Aisle 4 and spilled his guts to me, told me everything. About you and Parker and the paternity switch.” Chloe’s eyes widened in shock. “And you want to know what he said?” George didn’t wait for her to answer. “He told me you sent your engagement ring back to him and when he opened the package that afternoon, it nearly killed him. That’s what sent him over the edge. And that had nothing to do with Parker, Missy. It had to do with you. He loves you.” George pointed at her. “You!”
Just then, Philip came rushing through the door of the luncheonette. George was facing the door and when Chloe saw him focusing on something, she turned around in the booth to see what it was. Her eyes went wide when she saw Philip approaching. She quickly turned back to face George. “You called him!?! I thought you were a friend.” Chloe slid out of the booth and tried to push her way past Philip toward the door, but he grabbed her arms and blocked her way.
“Let me go.” She pushed him.
Philip wouldn’t let her go. “No Chloe, we need to talk.”
She looked at him with hatred. “You had all the time in the world to talk to me, Philip.”
“I tried to tell you,” he reminded her, “but you didn’t want to know.”
“I needed to know!” She shouted at him. “You know very well that I needed to know. You should have forced me to listen, but you didn’t, and now you missed your chance.”
Still holding her by the arms, he shook his head. “No, that can’t be. I won’t accept that, Chloe. I’ve missed way too many chances in my life, and I know that this is my last chance, my last chance with you. I can’t screw this up, Chloe. If I do, then it’s over for me. My life is over.”
George got up and approached Chloe and Philip. He draped an arm over each of them as if it were a group hug. “Listen you guys, it’s been real, but I gotta get going.” He looked at Philip. “I’m gonna let you take it from here, Phil.” Then to Chloe, he said, “I want you guys to figure this out, make it work. And I want an invitation to the wedding.” George patted Philip’s back and headed for the door.
“Thanks George,” Philip said, before turning his attention back to Chloe. “Let’s talk. Please. Let’s sit and talk.”
“No Philip. I don’t want to hear what you have to say. You turned your back on me, and you’ve been lying to me ever since. You don’t really love me, so why should I care what you have to say?”
“Maybe you shouldn’t care, but I know you do. So please, Chloe. Hear me out. If not for me, then for Parker’s sake.”
