Previews for the week of 10/27
This is a huge week. Chloe learns the truth. Yes, THAT truth. How will she react?
Here’s some random dialogue from the week ahead:
“I was feeling a little insecure about us.”
“You can leave me alone.”
“It was like this fantasy coming true with you on your knees in front of me.”
“That’s a nice little story, but it makes no sense.”
“To be honest, she did seem a little upset.”

Chapter 16
Spooned together and wrapped in each other’s arms after making love, they were somewhere between sleeping and waking. Chloe had been sleeping in the master bedroom more often lately. The magnetic pull of Philip’s bed had become too hard to resist. Not only that. Chloe sometimes had a hard time understanding her own reasons for wanting to sleep apart, especially when Philip’s warm and welcoming arms felt so much like home. Memories were returning, and life was finally starting to feel normal. Someday soon, she’d probably be sleeping here permanently. Not yet, but soon. Half asleep, Chloe murmered, “I love you, Philip.”
Hearing those words, Philip’s eyes blinked open. Laying behind her, he pulled her body closer to him and kissed the crook of her neck. “And I love you, Chloe.”
She smiled and rolled around to face him. “I didn’t tell you, I remembered something new tonight ... while you were singing to me.”
Philip raised his eyebrows. She remembered something? This is fantastic. “What did you remember sweetheart?”
“I remember you getting on your knees and proposing to me.”
And just like that, Philip went from exhilaration to disappointment. Philip didn’t propose to Chloe during the years she couldn’t remember. In high school -- sure, plenty times. But not since then. In fact, she’s the one who proposed to him. He wondered if maybe she was remembering being proposed to by Daniel or even Lucas, and she just thought it was Philip — the way she’d gotten mixed up about some other memories of late.
“What’s wrong,” she asked. “I thought you’d be happy that I remembered an important occasion like that.”
“Oh, um. I don’t know how to tell you this, Chloe,” he said hesitantly, “but I ... I didn’t propose to you.”
Chloe leaned away a bit. “What are you talking about? We were engaged. You told me that a million times. You said we were planning to get married.”
“Right. And yes ... we were, but I didn’t propose to you. You ... um, sweetheart ... you proposed to me.”
“Very funny,” she said sarcastically. “Like that’s really something I’d do.”
“It is. And you did. Why do you think you wouldn’t?”
“Because it’s not how it’s done. I mean, I’m not trying to set women’s liberation back a hundred years or anything, but I tend to be a little conventional when it comes to customs like those kinds of things.”
“Yes. Typically, you do. But ... see ... we were kind of having a disagreement and, I guess I was feeling a little insecure about us, so I think you were trying to prove that you wanted to marry me. I mean, we talked about it prior to that, but it wasn’t official, not until you proposed.”
“Philip, that’s a nice little story, but it makes no sense,” she protested. “I remember this very clearly. You got down on both knees and you held my hand and asked me to marry you.”
“Hmmm.” Philip decided to probe. “What else do you remember?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, such as, where were we? What were you wearing? What was I wearing.”
“Oh. Um.” Chloe closed her eyes and thought for a moment. “We were in your bedroom in the mansion.” She opened her eyes. “At least, I think that’s where we were. And you were wearing pants. Just pants,” she said, smiling. “No shirt. And I was ....,” Chloe chuckled. “Well, I was wrapped in just a bed sheet.”
“Ohhhh. Oh.” The light dawned when Chloe described the scene. “That wasn’t a proposal,” he said.
“Philip! Of course it was. Why else would you be down on your knees holding my hand like that?”
“Because, you were telling me you were thinking about leaving Salem, so, I got down on my knees, held your hand and begged you not to go.” He looked into her eyes. “We’d only just gotten together, and I wanted you to stay with me.”
Chloe looked into Philip’s face and sat up part-way. “You’re serious! Oh my god. So I really proposed to you? Not the other way around?”
“You really did. You got down on one knee and proposed to me.”
Chloe rolled away from Philip. “I’m not sure how I feel about this.”
Philip leaned over and kissed her shoulder from behind. “What’s the difference who proposed, Chloe? The result is the same. I said yes. If it makes you feel better, I already had an engagement ring for you.”
Chloe looked at the back of her hand. “Where is it?”
“I have it.” He took her hand and pulled it to his bare chest, as he threaded their fingers together. “I’m holding onto it and I plan to put it on your finger again when you’re ready.”
Chloe nodded and rolled onto her back. “When I’m ready,” she said pensively, as if she were processing all the new information she just learned. She looked at Philip again. “Didn’t it seem weird to you that I proposed?”
Philip rolled onto his back and looked up at the ceiling. “Oh brother. You’re not gonna let this go, are you?” Smiling, he turned his head to look at her. “No, as a matter of fact, it wasn’t weird. You proposing to me ... you, Chloe Lane, proposing to me, Philip Kiriakis ... was one of the two best moments of my life. So let’s not trivialize it.”
Chloe’s eyes danced as she looked at Philip, heartened by his smile and the tone of his voice. “One of the best moments of your life? Really?”
“Absolutely. It was like this fantasy coming true with you on your knees in front of me.”
“Philip!”
“Hey, I didn’t mean it that way,” he laughed. “I just meant that it finally told me that you loved me as much as I loved you.”
Chloe moved herself closer to Philip and kissed his stomach. She leaned her chin on his abdomen. “What was the other favorite moment? The other one on your top-two list?”
Stroking her hair, Philip answered, “It was the first time I held Parker after finding out he was my son. I’ll never forget that moment for as long as I live.”
“How old was he?” Chloe asked.
“He was little, maybe six or eight weeks old. I’d held him many times before, but it was different once I knew he was mine. I can’t even begin to describe it. ... And even though it threw our lives into chaos, knowing he was ours -- yours and mine -- the fact that we created this perfect little human being together, it was like a miracle. I felt like the luckiest man alive.”
Chloe turned and rested her cheek on Philip’s stomach so she could look at him as he spoke. “You know, you’re not the only one who’s lucky. Parker’s a very lucky little boy because he has you for a father. And I’m starting to understand why I proposed. I probably didn’t want some other woman getting her clutches into you again,” she laughed. “So I guess you could say, I’m lucky too.”
Philip leaned forward and took Chloe in his arms. He rolled her onto her back pressing his lips to hers and whispered, “Speaking of lucky, I think you’re about to get even luckier.” He kissed her again, stifling her laughter with a kiss.

Chapter 17
It was quite a job getting Parker settled down for a nap after breakfast. He was hyperactive this morning for some reason. Maybe he knew something she didn’t? Or maybe he was just a normal, healthy three year old. Finally, she bribed him with a promise of making a batch of chocolate chip cookies together later today. That did the trick.
With Philip at work, Chloe decided she would sit down at the computer in the home office and try to come up with some more ideas for their music division venture. Philip probably didn’t know how excited she was about the prospect. It made her feel useful again. It gave her the opportunity to use her brain for business and feel like she was contributing to something important, getting in on the ground floor, being the catalyst for something that would hopefully be successful.
She knew that getting it off the ground was a longshot. The feasibility study was under way, and even if it got approved internally, Philip would still have to present it to the board of directors. And with Victor as chairman of the board, she could just picture his disapproving look when he put the kabosh on it.
Philip had reassured her that he wasn’t even planning to mention her name in connection with it, not at first anyway. The goal was to get the new division approved first. As head of Titan Media, who gets hired to run the music division would be Philip’s decision. Chloe liked that.
Before heading into Philip’s home office, she wanted to tidy up the guest room, the room she sometimes slept in. She knew that Philip’s patience was running a little low. He wanted her in his bed, not just now and then, but all the time. They would get there, Chloe felt certain of that, but for now, there was still something nagging at the back of her mind that was keeping her from committing to Philip in the way he wanted -- completely. It was likely due to the fact that some of her memories remained elusive, making her feel the need to have her own space, maintain a little of that control.
She was straightening the comforter and fluffing the pillows when an odd image flashed in her mind. It was Philip. He was lying in this very bed facing the wall, his back toward her. She sat down on the bed to concentrate on the image.
Closing her eyes, she let the image in, until she heard distant voices in her head. Philip was saying something and he sounded angry. “You can leave me alone,” she heard him say. Then she heard herself say something. “Okay. Okay, I’ll leave you alone. But there’s something important we need to discuss. I don’t know a gentle way to say this, so I’ll just come out and say it. Philip, we need to tell Daniel. I mean, it’s only right. You know? He has a right to know that Parker is his son.”
Philip replied by shouting at her. “Then go tell him!”
Chloe’s eyes flew open wide. What the hell was that? Was it a memory? Did Philip really say that to her. Oh my god. He did!
All at once, Chloe remembered what happened. She ran her hands through her hair as she remembered that Philip threw her out. He literally and figuratively turned his back on her. All this time, they never discussed why they broke up. And this is why. No wonder she didn’t want to move back into his bedroom. No wonder she was reluctant to come into this room when she first got to Chicago. And no wonder she was afraid of her memories returning. Because the one person on this planet who said he would never abandon her actually did.
Chloe laid down on the bed and let the tears fall, dampening the newly fluffed pillows. All this time, she hoped that if she remembered her missing years, everything would be fine, life would work out and things would magically fall back into place. She couldn’t have been more wrong. Now she knew what she was so afraid to remember.
