Chapter 27
A short time later they were driving in the car. Philip glanced at Chloe. “In case I forget to tell you, you look beautiful tonight. But put the hood up. We’re incognito, remember?”
“Yeah yeah yeah,” Chloe answered like she didn’t care. “So, where are we going?”
“It’s a surprise.”
Chloe rolled her eyes. “I hate surprises, remember?”
Philip chuckled. “Oh right. Vesuvius and botulism and those kinds of things.”
“Exactly,” she laughed. “So are we going to the lake? Are you going to carve our initials in a tree?”
Philip glanced at Chloe and his mouth fell open.
Chloe’s eyes went wide. “Oh my god. Is that where we’re going?”
Philip shook his head from side to side as he turned his attention back to the road. “Geez Chloe. You really know how to ruin a good surprise.”
“Aw, I’m sorry Philip,” she said laughing. She leaned closer and touched his chin. “You’re not pouting, are you? I know how to turn that frown upside down,” she teased. She took her fingers and touched Philip’s mouth trying to push it into a smiling position. He started to laugh. “See,” she said. “Knew I could do it. You’re so easy.”
“Only where you’re concerned,” he said glancing at her. “With everyone else, I’m a hardass.”
“Yeah right,” Chloe said sarcastically. “You only like to think you’re a hardass.” She poked his side. “You’re really a big old softie.”
He chuckled. “Like I said, only where you’re concerned.”
Chloe leaned her head back on the headrest. “You know you left your MP3 player in my room.”
“It’s an iPod, not an MP3 player,” Philip said. Then he decided to take a chance. “And ... it’s not mine. It’s yours.”
“Oh?” Chloe raised an eyebrow and was quiet for a minute. “Hmmm. Actually, that’s what I thought.”
“You mean you remember?”
“I remember the music,” she said matter-of-factly. “To be honest, I didn’t think Mozart’s Figaro would be on your playlist.”
“Sorry. Opera’s not really my thing, unless you’re the one singing it.”
She looked at Philip. “Should I hang my head out the window and sing an aria.”
Philip looked at Chloe and smiled. “Sure, if that’s what you want to do.”
“Maybe on the way back. But ‘You’re in My Heart’?” She laughed. “That song is definitely you. I remember when you did that impression of Rod Stewart at open mic night on one of our dates in high school.”
Philip laughed. “See that I’d prefer you forgot.”
“I don’t want to forget that. I’ve forgotten so much. ... Philip, you know what I’ve been wondering,” Chloe asked. “It’s ... um ... I want to know if ... sheesh, there’s no easy way to ask this so I’ll just ask it. Did we ever ... do it?”
Philip kept his eyes on the road. “Do what?”
“You know. Oh brother, you’re going to make me say it, aren’t you? Okay, did we ever have sex?”
Philip gripped the wheel harder. He glanced at her. “You don’t remember?”
“Come on, Philip. You know very well that I don’t remember much of anything after 2006. So? Did we?”
Philip smirked. “Yes, constantly.”
Chloe leaned her head against the headrest and sighed. “I’m not gonna get a straight answer out of you, am I?”
“Okay, I’ll give it to you straight,” he chuckled. “But why do you want to know?”
“Why wouldn’t I want to know? To be honest, it’s weird thinking that I might have had sex with people and not remember it. I’d like to know who all my partners have been. Or was Brady the only one?”
Philip was quiet for a few minutes. Then he finally said, “Yes.”
Chloe looked at him. “Yes? Yes what? Brady was the only one?”
“I don’t know who all your partners were, Chloe,” he sighed. “But I can tell you that, yes, I was one of them.”
A small smile formed on Chloe’s lips. “I had a feeling,” she said. “So ... was it after my divorce from Brady?” Philip nodded. “And how was it?” She rested her hand on his shoulder. “Was it mind-blowing? Skyrockets? Fire and ice? Wet and wild?”
“Stop it!” Philip yelled, shocking Chloe.
“What’s the matter with you, Philip?”
“It’s not a joke, Chloe,” he said alternately glancing at her and the road. “It’s just not.”
“You need to lighten up, Philip. When did you get so serious?”
Philip took a deep breath. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to yell. It’s just that ... it meant something to me. Making love with you meant something to me. And yes, it was all those things you said it was, and more.”
Chloe got quiet. She leaned her head on the headrest again. “That’s good to know. Thank you for telling me.”

Poor Philip. It has got to be so hard with Chloe not remembering.

I'm glad Philip answered Chloe's questions. I liked his reaction.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the date.

Chapter 28
Philip opened the passenger door and held out his hand to help Chloe out of the car.
“Can I take off my cloak of darkness now,” she quipped.
Philip nodded and took her cape off of her. He opened the trunk and tossed both capes inside. Then he took out a Bose speaker which he placed near their tree. He took an iPod out of his pocket and he crouched down to set it on the speaker’s docking system.
Chloe walked toward the tree and touched the inscription. “P and C forever. Oh Philip. It’s still standing.”
Philip rose to his feet and took Chloe’s hands. “So are we.” He took her in his arms and pulled her body to his as “I Need You” began to play and they danced slowly to the music.
Chloe closed her eyes and leaned her head on Philip’s shoulder. He could feel her completely relax in his arms so he closed his eyes too and rested his cheek on her hair. He wanted to relive the moment, to go back to where it started and then to go forward from there. Chloe was so receptive to him in the now, but would she still be in the future?
There were things he wanted her to remember, like Parker. But there were some awful things that happened to her that he wished she would never recall. He held her tighter, wanting to protect her from all the bad things in life. If only he could.
She lifted her head off his shoulder and locked her hands behind his neck. She looked at him and asked, “Why did you bring me here, Philip? Tell me the truth. Tell me what you’re thinking. And tell me why you told my parents you’d never give up on me.”
Philip gazed deep into her eyes. “Don’t you know,” he whispered.
Chloe shook her head no.
“It’s because I never got over you,” he said before brushing her lips with a kiss. “It’s because I want you to remember us.”
“That’s what I want too,” Chloe said quietly, looking into Philip’s eyes. Philip kissed her again with full force this time. Her arms held him close as LeeAnn Rimes continued to sing “I Need You” on a continuous loop.

Chapter 29
Chloe broke the kiss, but kept her arms around Philip. “Is this where I’m supposed to be, Philip?”
Oh god. Philip’s breath caught in his throat at that question. Yes! The answer was hell yes, she was exactly where she was supposed to be. He wondered if she could feel how fast his heart was beating. “Does it feel like this is where you belong,” he asked, holding her in his arms.
She stepped out of his embrace and walked a few steps away. “I don’t know.” She ran her hand through her wavy locks. “I don’t know where I should be. Sometimes I don’t even know who I am and it scares me.”
Philip walked up behind her and massaged her shoulders. “I know. I know you’re scared, but you’re not alone.” He leaned close to her ear. “I’m here.”
Chloe turned around. “You’ve always been here, haven’t you?”
Looking into her eyes, Philip swallowed hard. He shook his head no. “Not always. Not when I should have been. Not when you needed me most.”
“I don’t know what that means, Philip.” Tears rolled down her cheeks and Philip wiped them away with his thumbs. He didn’t even know that tears were rolling down his own cheeks. He broke the contact and stepped away from her. He didn’t know what to say or what to do. She wanted answers. And he had them. He had the answers she wanted but he couldn’t tell her. He couldn’t risk triggering her PNES. She was supposed to remember slowly, naturally, on her own ... that is, if she ever does.
“This was a bad idea,” he said turning back to look at her. “I shouldn’t have brought you here. You already remember this place, what happened here all those years ago. And it’s obviously too emotional for you.”
She grasped his arm. “Philip, don’t say that.”
“We should go home.”
She let go of his arm and nodded. “If you think so.”
“I do.” He put his arm around her shoulder and led her back to the car. He collected the music equipment, then they put on their cloaks, climbed back in, and drove back to Craig’s empty house in silence.

I am sorry they went back home. But I am glad that Phillip is thinking about Chloe's needs first. She needs to remember on her own.
