CAR
Sami honked her horn.
SAMI: Come on! Drive, you moron! Geez, do they just let anybody get a license these days?
LUCAS: I guess.
She honked the horn again. Someone from another car shouted something indistinct.
SAMI: Same to you!
Sami shook her head and took a deep breath.
SAMI: I don’t know what happened, why Johnny is in the hospital, and what part E.J. had in this, but dammit, I’m gonna find out!
SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
Bill met the E.M.T.s who brought Johnny in on a stretcher. E.J. and Sydney followed closely behind.
BILL: What have we got?
EMT: 20 year old male, blunt force trauma to the head. We were able to stop the bleeding on the way over.
BILL: Get him into the O.R.
The E.M.T.s nodded and took the stretcher away.
E.J.: I want your best team of doctors on this, the best of the best! You have got to make sure he’s alright!
BILL: We’ll do everything you can.
Bill followed where the E.M.T.s had gone. E.J. watched them go. He turned to look at Sydney, who had gone to sit in one of the chairs and was rubbing her arm.
E.J.: Sydney, I…
Sydney looked up, but not at E.J.
SYDNEY: Will!
Sydney got up and ran to Will, who had just gotten out of the elevator.
WILL: Syd!
Will hugged Sydney. She winced and drew in a sharp breath.
WILL: Hey, are you okay?
SYDNEY: My arm. It hurts.
She showed Will the bruise on her arm. Will looked over at E.J.
WILL: How did this happen?
E.J.: I-it was an accident.
WILL: Well, we’ll deal with that later. Come on, Syd. Let’s get that arm checked out.
Sydney nodded and followed Will to the nurse’s station. A few minutes later, they were in one of the clinic rooms, waiting to see a doctor.
WILL: Syd, what’s going on? How did all this happen?
Sydney looked down and rubbed her arm.
Will got up from his chair and sat down next to Sydney.
WILL: Hey, it’s me. You can tell me anything, you know that.
Sydney nodded and wiped her nose.
SYDNEY: So…a few weeks ago, when I went over to my Dad’s for dinner, he asked me about Johnny and Meadow’s baby. I didn’t think it was my place to say anything, and I knew he and Johnny had been fighting about it, so I told my Dad that I didn’t know if the baby was born or not. He made me promise to tell him when I found out.
WILL: Did you?
Sydney shook her head.
SYDNEY: Georgia was already born when I went over there. I said if I heard, I’d tell him, but I already knew. I guess I kinda lied.
WILL: You did, but not for the worst reasons. You were trying to protect Johnny. E.J. shouldn’t have put you in that position.
SYDNEY: Anyway, somehow Daddy found out that the baby was born, and that I lied. He called me over after school this afternoon and confronted me about it. I tried to explain why I did what I did, but then he grabbed me by the arm-
SAMI: He what?!
Will and Sydney jumped. Neither of them had seen Sami standing there.
SYDNEY: Mom, when did you get here?
SAMI: Not nearly soon enough, thanks to the idiots in traffic! Now what did you just say, about your father grabbing your arm?!
SYDNEY: Please stop yelling at me!
SAMI: I’m not-
Will and Sydney gave her a look. Sami took a deep breath.
SAMI: I’m not trying to yell, sweetheart. I’m just very worried about your brother, then I get to the hospital and hear that you’re waiting for a doctor to look at your arm. Go ahead and finish what you were saying.
SYDNEY: Okay. Well, Johnny got the Mansion just as Daddy was trying to take me…somewhere, I don’t know where, probably downstairs. He and Daddy started fighting about Georgia. Johnny tried to get Daddy to let go of my arm, but he wouldn’t. When Johnny tried to help me…
She gulped.
SAMI: Go on, Sydney. What happened?
SYDNEY (voice breaking): Daddy shoved him and he hit his head on the fireplace.
Sami’s eyes flashed. She closed them and took a very deep breath, then opened them again.
SAMI: Well, I’m very sorry that you were put into that position, Sydney. I don’t want you to worry, though. Let’s just make sure your arm will be okay, and then I am gonna make sure nothing like this happens again.
Out in the waiting room, Lucas handed Allie a cup of water. She had gotten there around the same time as Sami and Lucas.
ALLIE: I texted Meadow. She’ll probably be here soon.
LUCAS: Good. How are you doing, kid?
ALLIE: To be honest, I’m worried for Johnny. And it’s like I’ve been worried for him most of the afternoon, I just didn’t know why until I got Sydney’s call.
LUCAS: Well, they do say twins have a special connection, that they’re able to tell when something’s up with one another. Look at your Uncle Rex and Aunt Cassie.
Allie nodded.
ALLIE: I just really hope he’ll be okay!
LUCAS: He will, I’m sure of it. Your Grandpa Bill and the other doctors, they’re gonna do everything they can.
Lucas put his arms around Allie. A little bit later, Sami, Will and Sydney walked out. Sydney’s arm was in a sling.
SAMI: I take it there’s no news?
LUCAS: Not yet, unfortunately. Last I heard, Dad and a few other doctors were working on him.
SAMI: Well, my daughter has a sprained arm. It’ll have to be in a sling for a while. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have something I need to take care of.
Lucas, Will, Allie and Sydney watched as Sami walked down the hall.
E.J. sat in a chair in one of the private rooms, looking down at his shoes.
E.J. (thinking): He’s got to be okay. I know I was mad at him, possibly a little bit unfairly, but I certainly didn’t want anything like this to happen. If there is a higher power out there in the universe, please, let me son be okay!
A shadow fell over E.J. He looked up and saw Sami glaring down at him.
SAMI: What the hell have you done to my children?
