Chapter 5
THE PIER
MIA: You got here sooner than I thought you would.
The person she is talking to, and had, just seconds ago, been talking to on the phone, is revealed to be Tony DiMera.
TONY: I have a habit of doing that. Turning up at moments when people don't expect me.
MIA: So, why did you call me here, Mr. DiMera?
TONY: Because, Mia, we have some things to discuss. First of all: Chad. Now, before my “death” was orchestrated by father, I vaguely remember you mentioning this boy. Who is he? Why would he be so interested in the fact that I'm alive?
MIA: He's one of Stefano's children.
TONY: Well, who isn't these days? Either way, which of Stefano's many millions of call girls did Chad come from?
MIA: D.A. Woods' now-deceased wife.
TONY: Madeline? Oh, how lovely. The spawn of Satan and the Medusa. That's a combination that almost doesn't bare thinking about. I'm assuming that, as he does so well, Stefano is taking young Chad under his wing. Turning him into another DiMera soldier, as he's tried to do with all of his children. Speaking of which, how's my...dear...half-brother, Elvis?
MIA: Oh, I thought you knew.
TONY: I've been on the run for the last few years, Mia. The only person from Salem I've had contact with recently is you. So, what's happened to him?
MIA: He's dead. He got murdered by Dr. Evans' twin sister.
TONY: Elvis? Dead? You mean, he hasn't inherited Stefano's ability to rise from the grave? Yes!
Tony clapped his hands and started laughing.
TONY: This is wonderful! True, I don't want anything to do with Stefano, or the DiMera Empire, but I just find it funny that father's golden child is gone.
MIA: Well...sort of.
TONY: What do you mean “sort of”?
MIA: He is gone...but, Stefano is trying to replace him with Chad.
TONY: Yes, I was afraid of that. And, that's the very reason I've come back to Salem. Chad is still young. He doesn't know all of the evil Stefano has caused. I've got to stop Stefano before he perverts Chad into another one of his super soldiers. But, that's not the only reason I've come back.
MIA: Then, what's the other reason?
TONY: I've come back to try and make contact with my daughter.
OUTSIDE THE LOFT
JAN: Oh no!
PAUL: Still as feisty as ever, huh, sweet cheeks?
JAN: But...but, how did this happened? You...you...died. I killed you.
PAUL: I was never really dead, sugar. Well, I was for a minute or two, but I was brought back to life. I lost a bit of my short term memory, but I came back here, and all the pieces fell back into place.
Paul moved towards Jan and put a hand on her shoulder.
PAUL: And it is so good to see you again, superstar.
Jan shrugged off Paul's hand and moved slowly backwards.
JAN: Please...please, don't hurt me.
PAUL: Come on, now. Why would I wanna hurt you? You know how much I dig you, right?
Paul stepped even closer to Jan. Jan dug into her purse and got out a gun.
JAN: Stay back. Don't come any closer.
PAUL: Or what? You gonna shoot me again? Try to kill me?
Shawn-D walked outside. The first thing he noticed was how scared Jan was. The second was Paul Mendez.
SHAWN-D: Jan, what's going...you!
